Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - fixie evangelism

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Stopped by a teammate's house on the way home this evening to pick up my team clothing, and noticed that he had an old 80's road-bike hanging in the rafters.
The guy has been riding singlespeed MTB longer than anyone I know, but, to my knowledge, hasn't ridden fixed. Prior to mountaing biking, he raced BMX for years and years. So he's definitely into different styles of riding.
I mentioned that the bike looked like a good fixie-conversion candidate, but didn't have time to pursue that line of conversation any further, as I hadda get going in order to make it home before dark (My lights crapped out on my last night. Won't even turn on. Battery is showing a full charge.).
Question is, should I make a point of hassling him about it (in a friendly way, of course) next time I see him? Hell, I'll even volunteer to build the wheel to convert it if he wants to buy the parts.
I'd just like to see that old beater take on a second life as a fixie, and convert another local rider to fixed-gear riding in the process. Maybe get a new riding buddy for fixed-gear road rides.

I try to push riding fixed like its crack. But only to a select clientle. I had a friend who desperately needed a new bike (riding everywhere he went on 40lb walmart special shocks-pegs-not so lucky). All the spares i put together came out as a fixie. And he loves it. Rancid from this board got some fixie lovin from me too. Now if i can only convince my friend Rice (currently the only female messenger on island) to lose her gears, i'll be set.

I say you should pull the old pump off his old bike and bludgeon him into submission.
Seriously, I wouldn't bother talking him into it unless he has a need for a fixie (like has a daily commute).

"I know your daddy ain't never told you about fixed gear. You know why? 'Cause it's too dangerous, kid. Too ******** dangerous. And you know why it's so dangerous? Because it changes you. Changes you like sixty shots of espresso and a kick in the balls changes you. You start riding fixed and soon you start to perk up at the mention of fixies like a syphillitic call girl perks up to the mention of penicilin. You ride this bike once and it'll seem grafted to your ass because you'll never get off it again. Hell, man, by the way you're looking at me I can see that you can't handle it.
"Or can you?"

This thread has some very good writing in it; writing which also, on my browser, has lines through it, like censorship lines.
Very good writing.
I love this forum.
