Mountain Biking - Trek 6700 worth upgrading?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I have a 2001 Trek 6700. I would like to get some peoples advice on whether or not to upgrade it. The frame is part of Treks "ZX Alpha" frame line. I would possibly be looking to upgrade the fork, cranks, handlebar and brakes and possibly wheel set if I decide to go with discs. Do you guys think it would be a waste of my money in the long run? I don't have the money to dump all this stuff on at once, just one or two pieces at a time. Let me know what everyone thinks.

I have the same frame (warrenty replacement of an old 6500) and have been slowly improving it. I am on a budget, but keeping a well working bike is a priority. I put on a Rock Shox Psylo ($200) XTR Shift / Brake ($100) and Avid brakes (Magnesium $70) among other items. I haven't had a chance to replace the old bars, grips, etc. The shock has kept me from going over the bars several times. The shifters make the old LX derailleurs work better than ever and the Avid Mag Vee brakes are enough to stop me (235lbs) on very fast, steep decents. I have yet to pull the front brake lever 100%. It's also nice to notice the improvement each item brings. All are noticable. All make me go faster up and down the hills!
