hi i've been reading a lot about rollers on these forums and there seems to be a distinct line between people who think that you should ride rollers on hard surfaces only vs. people who ride on carpets. i just picked up a pair of rollers and would like to know what everyone thinks, definitively, whether or not i should ride on my carpet. riding on carpet would be ideal because that's where the tv is, but i'll leave it up to you fine folks. what do you think? thanks-

it depends, if you have really long carpet then don't because the carpet will get caught in the rollers.
If your carpet is pretty short then go ahead. I do it every once in awhile when I don't have time to get outside for a "real ride".
btw, I ride on the rollers on the carpet so i can a movie or something when i ride. Staring at a wall gets boring.

He's right. I tried rollers on my carpet at home in front of the TV and the carpet was long so it touched the rollers. It made for some added resistance, but a big burn mark in the carpet wouldn't be a good idea.
If the carpet doesn't touch the rollers, then why not? I guess if you fall off you might get rug burn, but falling on a hard surface isn't exactly pleasant, either.
I have a short carpet, so my rollers are ok. I guess it doesn't work for that 70s, deep shag stuff.

I keep my carpet trimmed pretty close.
Haven't had any mishaps yet.

On the carpet by the TV is where I always use my rollers. Go for it!

It's a pretty good idea to put a big towel under the rollers so you don't end up with a really stinky (and maybe stained) patch of carpet.
If your carpet winds up being a problem you could try one or two of those flexible plastic/rubber mats that let office chairs roll on carpet. Places like Staples or Office Depot usually have them pretty cheap.

I think they feel best on hardwood floors (which I no longer have)
have only used my trainer on regular-length carpet, then tried at lbs during a fitting (on hardwood) and the difference was night and day. It just feels "mushy" on carpet, more road-like on hard surface.
Once went on the trainer on the carpet, had recently greased the chain - spotty carpet+angry wife=trainer banned from carpet

yeah lot of crud can come off the bike and risk making a mess.. i used to get rubber dust off tires even... i used to use a small sheet of plywood to save the dirt and also save the rocking on the padding etc.. gave it all up for ridin outside rain or shine now anyway.. anybody need rollers?... hell with hampster wheels..

question: does the carpet match the cutains?
Seriously tough, I bought a firm rubber workout mat at Wally World that comes with 4 interlocking pieces that are about 2' x 2'. I made a surface of 2' wide by 8' long to put ontop of the carpet to give a firm surface and prevent grease spillage.

Yeah your carpet will get dirty....I have a rug under mine. IT now has grease and two little burn outs from when I went of the side from not paying attention. As long as there is no rubing you are cool!
Rollers f'n rule!!
Glad to hear more people using them
Just make sure the carpet doesnt touch the rollers, that your bike is clean and not "shedding" stuff onto the carpet, and that you dont sweat all over the carpet.
Also, funny story that applies, I have a friend that was trying rollers for the first time on carpet, and when he innevitably fell, his spinning tires put a nice burn/rip mark in the carpet. Smelled nasty, too. Funny story, though. He also, same day, managed to somehow slide the bike forward and off the rollers, making the bike shoot out and damn near hit the TV. That was a funny day :)
