Water should be fine. Just don't blast it to hard. I usually use degreaser and a rag, but if its really packed with mud I sometimes spray it. And always lube it afterwards. Near the front derrailleur, make sure your not spraying into the BB by accident.
as long as you let it dry properly to make sure no rust forms, if it is a new derraileur or a t least not scratched then you would probably just get rust on the nuts and bolts. Use a degreaser like 'Muck Off' thats good, and washes off with water, then use a protective spray like one of the products 'Finish Line' do, this helps parts of your bike shrug off most of the crap you pick up on a dirty ride.

good ol XTR. No steel involved. only alloy and a titanium bolt.
Hey WorldIRC,
don't be too hyped about alloy...
During winter our streets get "defrosted" with salt. This + a foot of snow is a pure front dreailleur killer. I had to toss 2 already because they sucked up the saltwater and started to swell. Neither oiling nor washing after the ride will help...
Fortunately that's my commuting bike....otherwise you're right, the XTR front derailleur is quite a piece of art.
