nashbar has finally learned to cash in on our little group....and it is excelent

the formula hub wheels, soma cogs, the new steel toe clips, and i just saw the SS conversion kit...all of which i intend to purchase (well maybe not the wheels)....

my bike already is 75% nashbar....and now it could easily be done 100%....sorry bike shop guys, but for do it yourselfers.....nashbar really has become an unbeatable source....

(i clearly dont work for them...i just think it is great that there is now a source for reasonable priced (though questionable quality) for peeps just starting out.

I have to say that Nashbar is invaluable. Without Nashbar I'd be paying twice what I am now (online or at an LBS). I mean with the heavy discounts and the 10% coupons even the brand name stuff becomes fairly priced. But making a Nashbar brand is the real ingenuity because generally the Nashbar brand doesn't lack quality it just lacks a high price. They generally do a knock off of the popular stuff so if you're not looking for a Shimano logo you can save a bunch of money. I have encountered some bad quality Nashbar products (like their platform pedals) but for the most part it's on par with anything it knocks off.

Just keep it under 20$ USD/item, that way there's no customs or taxes.
Ive got a few nashbar things with teh big sales and stuff, like inline levers for 15$ etc.. Just gotta be careful and never corss the 20$ barrier.

Theres this crazy nashbar pursuit bike at my local bike co-op that would make a great fixie, but someone built it up as it was meant to be, and its a sale bike now. Its a pretty nice frame, especially considering its nashbar. Anyone know who used to make the nashbar frames when they had them?

Their platform pedals are bad? I was thinking about ordering some of those that come with clips and straps for $15. :(

I just ordered a bunch of the abovementioned track stuff from them and I'm in Mtl. Their site says they ship FedEx, but in the end they only offered Priority Air (USPS). I paid huge for shipping comparatively, but I won't pay brokerage charges (not shipped by courrier), and from what I can tell from the customs site, I won't pay duty either. I might get lucky and have a bike nerd check my invoice and decide I won't pay Cdn sales tax either, but I doubt that. This is my first bike bike purchase though, I've usually kept it under $50 from the US.

Even with paying $60 in shipping (got two wheelsets among other stuff) and factoring in Cdn taxes, it will still be way cheaper than LBS pretax prices I'm sure. I needed a new front wheel for my mtn bike - same junk as the stock stuff on my bike (deore disk-rynolite) they wanted a hundred bucks, and I got a set for under that.

Unless I'm not shopping at the right bike shops. I wish I knew a lbs in Mtl that I could get behind, but I can't - but stop into a big one on Saturday and watch a whole family buy a set of Cannondales plus accessories and you see why I guess.

Nashbar has a knack for having cool NOS stuff and some pretty cool oddball stuff. I have been pretty happy with the stuff I havent gotten from them for my fixie, rear hub, Turbo saddle, clips and straps. I even work in a shop and find myself picking up some stuff from them. I am waiting for the front track hub to go on sale again for twenty bucks so I can have matching wheels.

Nashbar is the outlet store for Performance. That's why they have good deals on lots of NOS stuff.

just got my nashbar bullhorns the other day and love it. It flexes a bit, but i'm pretty light so i'm not complaining, especially when it's only 15bucks... gotta love those sales. should've bought two.

how about the nashbar track hubs? any experience?

I've had one in the rear for the last month or so, seems to be fine. My friend that has the surly hub and I compared and they seem to be of the same quality. It also came with two lock rings which impressed me. I am satisfied enough that I plan to order the front hub so I can have a matching set.

Positive! I've been using one brakeless for a couple months now, held up fine so far. Feels solid. Fix/fix, comes w/ 2 lockrings, good value even when they were $50 (what I paid, grr :) ) I'll report back with a detailed review maybe in a month or two, when I have put much more serious miles on it. No complaints so far though.

I guess I'm heading to Nashbar to get new socks and some gloves, since the Chicago Bike Show and Performance didn't have any on sale.

If you get slapped with customs... it's going to hurt bad.

Yeah montreal's really not great. I usually go to Martin Swiss over in westmount, they are pricey very much roadie oriented etc but they have really really good mechanics, I know some guys who race for them.
I had my wheels built there, they did a really good job.
I've heard cycles amherst has some good track/SS but i've never been.

also worth nothing I've found really really good deals at www.bikeroom.com
they had rhyno lites on XT disk hubs handbuild for 99$ CDN.. pretty sweet.

You're not crazy, honduraz; I didn't get it either; and I'm still not getting it. I'm assuming that it was a mistype.

oh yeah - that thing. Car Sponsor this year Koffee? Or did they do away with that?

No car sponsor= no money to do nearly half the stuff they normally do, which is a shame. It is just pretty thin.

Please! Might as well withdraw support from Armstrong too. It's not worth it when you can't see any of the great stuff that's out there, and there's nothing I can get my hands on. Next year, if Hummer comes in, I wouldn't be surprised at all. At least it would be worth the money to go to. I hope they get the biggest car company out there to back them up. If people want to whine like a bunch of babies, they need to be prepared to front the money to replace the money lost by the major sponsor.

i need front brake, has anyone tride nashbar's jail brakes?

colinm
04-02-05, 11:00 PM
On-road or off?

The jail brake MTB lever has pretty bad build quality but it works. The actual brake itself is very good and the pads are, too. Cables included, good deal. I did my whole MTB SS with a set for the cost of a pair of salmon pads from the LBS.

I'd like to hear about the road variety.

wfisher

The jail brakes are great. They're darn light (btw like 105 and Ultegra I think) and they're nice dual-pivot with real brake shoes. The sora brakes are more expensive and they don't even come with real brake shoes - just one big pad that acts as the shoe.

I've got a '84 Nashbar touring bike. My brother bought it back in the day when Nashbar was still owned by Arnie Nashbar and it was a catalog company. Anyway the frame is Japanese made Tange 2 lugged steel. It's a bomber of a frame and makes an excellent cyclocross bike.
