This may be a monumetally dumb question, but I appreciate any help the vast knowledge base of BikeForums users can offer. I have a FSA compression device (not a compressor pro, but the same deal in aluminum up top) for my 1" fork. The device is clearly marked 1" on top (and it's not like they make a 7/8th version or something), but what seems to be the largest size it expands to is still at least a tenth of an inch shy of fitting snugly against the walls of the steerer tube, let alone compressing anything (and yes, the fork is *definitely* actually 1", an Easton EC30). The device expands by pushing two conical nuts together, forcing the expansion wedges that sit between these two nuts apart. These conical nuts are in contact, so I can't see any possible way this could expand further.

What in the world am I doing wrong? I have zero experience with the FSA compressor device, so it's possible I'm overlooking something very basic, hence my caveat that this might be a monumentally dumb question. Does anyone have any insight they can offer me before I go out and get a star nut (the steerer is aluminum, so the compressor device is overkill, but I have it around and it looks oh-so-cool, so why not?)? No real help in my answer, just wanted to let you know I just built a bike with a 1" carbon fork with carbon steer tube, used a FSA headset and the FSA compressor you refer to and all went well. Maybe you have a defective part?

FSA Alloy Compression Wedge replaces starnuts, which can't be used on carbon steerer tubes.

My guess is that you're using a component that is designed to be used on a carbon steerer tube and that a carbon steerer tube would have a smaller inside diameter.

This is exactly correct. The EC30 steerer tube has a very thin alloy wall compared to a carbon tube.
