A fellow dad on the Cub Scout ride broke his chain today. We had gone about one mile. I had my Crank Bros tool in my backpack. I whipped it out, took the link of and put the chain back together.

I then took the chain apart again, and put it through the bike frame (DUH) and put it back together. This time, I still missed the front deraillure, but he bent the deraillure back out of the way. We got the chain on the sprockets, and finished the ride.

It was an interesting experience for me, since I only used the chain breaker when I bought it at the Bike Shop in Hiram. It took a minute to figure out how to put the link back into the chain, but it worked, This bike was an old Murray, that has not been off the garage wall in four years, but we got her going. The dad, Joe, thanked me profusely. It felt good. It was a learning experience for me as well.

Things learned. Put a couple of pairs of surgical type rubber gloves in the repair kit, chains are greasy little buggers. Pay attention to how you route the chain when you put it back together.

We all had a great time. Best - Ted

The Cub Scout ride comment reminds me of a flat I had at Hotter 'n Hell one year.

I flatted about 60 miles into the ride, and discovered I'd left my seat bag in my car. I proceeded to look for other riders on MTBs to see if I could borrow a tube. I saw a father & son duo in Boy Scout shirts, so I approached them and asked if they had a tube or patch kit I might borrow. The father took off his Camelbak, opened it up, and said no, he didn't. I asked (with a grin), "what about 'Be Prepared?'" He made some excuse about purchasing the Camelbak the night before and forgetting to pack it with his supplies. I ended up taking the Sag wagon in to the finish.
