Am looking for a nice spot for a guerilla gorilla grass track race. maybe in 2 weeks? gg park? it's gotta be smooth and flat. I'm sure i can come up with some prizes and every spectator can be a winner with some on track betting. c'mon sf, lets reinvent this game! thoughts? location? lets scout it out! I have orange cones to mark an inside lane, a croud makes a nice outer wall. do we have a track day / night?

Yes, let's do this. Except in Chicago. How about Humboldt Park? It would be perfect.

No, Lets do it in Hawaii. We've got kapiolani park. and Ala Moana beach park.

Not that anyone cares or even knows where that stuff is! I can't wait to move.

maybe we could get this to coincide with the bikepolo stuff?

"Gorilla" or "guerilla"? Either way, sounds cool.

What types of tyres are used in grass track racing? Are they textured at all, or just the standard road tire?

standard tubulars usually, taped/tied to the rim in four places: comparing the numbers on a clockface to that of a bike tire - 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock. This is what I have seen in the past regarding grasstrack tire set-ups.

More info on grasstrack racing:

(I think that is Emilio Estevez in the lead...)

One way or another, let's make this happen. I heard about it when I was in Scotland and have wanted to set one up ever since. If we can draw a big circle in the grass and not get in trouble for riding on it, the rest is easy. I was thinking that lime (like on sports fields?) or even flour would make a good temporary marker. To make the circle just put a stake in the ground, tie a string to it and start walking. Then we just need beer and riders.

I'm down for some grass racing. Sounds like fun. I guess I'd probably have to gear down a bit. Watch out though, Dolface was pretty fast at the track yesterday....

trying to decide the best way to get this location...

1, say your making a student film and get a 25 dollar permit (by the way this is the best way to have a party without cops) Even try to get permission from a park or school to host the event? I know if we try to do it for real, that permit is expencive.

2, just do it guerilla and hope you get to finish the qualifier and finals. It needs to be a low key location, not gg park on a sunday. the grass areas by third street, soccer fields at 16th and bryant, the flat part of delores, some high school?, night would be sick, but would need some light from a parking lot, or full moon.. any thoughts?

Sounds like fun, heck I might even take a drive up there to participate. Hell I'll get an entire LA crew to bounce up there and we can go head to head, SF vs LA...that'd be cool.

I don't get it. Why only in 4 places?

to leave viable tread surface I believe

To make the circle just put a stake in the ground, tie a string to it and start walking.
Or make an oval track by using this technique to make two half-circles and connecting them with straights. I've never raced on a track but a real circle seems weird, plus no good sprints.

one thing to keep in mind is that the ground needs to be dry; if it's wet it'll be to slippery, and we would probably tear up the grass, which wouldn't be cool.

a football or soccer field woul be ideal...

someone would have to cut the grass down real low in the middle of the night, which would look kinda funny the next day, all of a sudden there's a shortgrass track in the middle of a park

Would astroturf racing be viable? :D

I AM IN. what about a high school track that isn't dirt? or that big basketball court in the mission at 17th st?

astroturf? That stuff is horrible enough when you bail in hockey, let alone on a bike!

cool...just don't forget 'cube and the boyz...

with all the recent schools closing doors in alameda county....there should be at least one grassy field around not being used....there were a couple fields up in montclair that we used as stealth rugy fields back in the day....i'll see what i can come up with on this side....
