Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hehehe! How's it going in France anyways? I really want to make it out there for the Tour some time. I was in Spain during the Vuelta last year (for work), but missed the race by one day!! Funny enough though I bumped into Christian Vandevelde (Ex US Postal, current Liberty Segeuros rider) and ended up chatting with him for a good while...Turns out that the racers all stayed in my hotel the day BEFORE I was there! So I was SUPER bummed, but pretty stoked for getting to chat with Christian in a pretty relaxed setting.
I am really excited for the Tour this year...Hope you've got lots of room in your suitcase for souveigners! When do you head back to Toronto?
I am riding in a little 6.3km Time Trial this morning..Its rainy and wet, so I hope I don't pull a Jan Ulrich and slide all over the course :)
Enjoy your Royale with Cheese!

You know I don't know what my time was...although I know the dude who was ahead of me, beat me by 3seconds!
We did the time trial after a nice 40km warm up :)
We were absolute puddles by the end of the ride. Everyone was on fixies (it is a fixie group, so they only let fixies join up), but it was a tonne of fun. Once again I had the steepest gearing, which hurt a little on the ride UP the Bayview Extension, but would have helped on the flat time trial if I wasn't so tired already!
These guys ride together at least once a month or more, so if any of you guys wanna hop on your fixies and join in I will keep you in the loop.
Kinda hot today eh??
Well Heather and I are heading out for some chow! See you guys soon!

I completely forgot that it was a Toronto Fixed Gear thing.... I haven't visited they're site in a while. Sounds like fun... remember to hydrate thy self. I went for a short ride (40k) today and didn't drink enough, now I have the mother of all migrains....

It is like an armpit out there. Nasty. The smog has given me a sore throat too. I did the TBN 140km ride on Sunday, and I drank almost 8 liters of water from the time I got up in the morning until I finished, and still didn't have to piss the whole time. That's a couple of gallons of sweat.....mmmm.
I'm actually considering getting a respro. I had to brush my teeth after riding to work today. The air at Leslie and the 401 was a little chunky.... Hopefully the storm hits before I ride home or I'll need a ventilator.

something else i noticed too; after many re-applications of sunscreen that I still ended up completely burnt (arms, neck, legs) and filthly from all the dirt in the air as it stuck to my stinky, sweaty, oily skin... GROSS.

I guess, I don't know of the MJ connection, though. You'd think he'd need something custom built as his facial structure is one unknown to evolution.
The masks are here:

Any idea if those things actually do anything? I can imagine it would be really uncomfortable, like wearing one of those hospital masks everyone had when all that SARS BS was floating around. Plus, it has to be hard to breathe through, right?

A guy I know who has mild asthma and rides with one on pollution days actually stopped wearing it during the SARS incident for public-perception reasons.

I'll probably only use it for select parts of the ride. Part of the factor for me, despite luvin' my lungs is that filters should be replaced, on average, every 69 hours or so. Could get a little pricey. Or 6 months with the bandit model which is cheaper...

I was in the hopsital during the SARS inciden for a busted lung (no relation to SARS) at that time. It was a bit rediculous. The nurses made us wear masks in the ER, then after the second day all the patients took them off and only the nurses wore them. Didn't wear a mask until I got discharged 3 weeks later.

Do you mean someone who will size you for a bike? La Bicycletta or Dukes both do fitting services. If you aren't buying a bike and just want the fitting, then there is obviously a fee. If you buy a bike the fitting is free.
I believe Dukes charges $40 or $50

yes,but from Oakville to Hamilton doing the long route would be 20 k correct me if I am wrong, then from Hamilton to Stoney Creek ???? from and if you take the Wine route from Stoney Creek that's another 70 K, I did that route and my Kilomter reading was at 210 K when I reach Niagara falls from Scarborough. I visirted the website of TBN and they say its only 168 K, I want to know which route is the shortest, I will call the TBN coordinator is there are cancellation, because if I mail my application it won't reach them on time. or I will show up on Saturday at there meeting place at High Park at Granadier Restaurant and see what happen.

There is some sort of application form you need to download from the TBN site. There is also a contact phone number, give the guy a call and see what he says.

Sounds cool, where in high park do they meet? I tried calling the number on the website, but just got his answering machine. I already have the registration form so I was really just wondering where we meet and if we pay there at the start I assume.

no fixies (I wussed out too) don't think I'd be able to do it on mine anyways as everything on that bike is really loose and sloppy, not much of a concern to me on my easy 12km commute to work during the week... but exhausted in the middle of nowhere I'd rather be on my roadie.
Met Oscar at the start (the only other bike forums member there I guess), but we got separated about 30km into the ride and I didn't see him again until at the Falls. 7 hours almost exactly to get there, slight problems with a cranky hotel manager, ate dinner, then too tired to walk much after that. Asleep by 9:30pm, awoke at 6, ate again. Left with Oscar at 7:30am for return trip. I flatted in st. Catherine’s and shortly after Oscars knee started to bother him at about the 65km mark, so we exchanged cell phone numbers incase of an emergency and he took a detour back and arrived about an hour and a half earlier than I did, and I rode along the original route mostly solo until the last quarter when I caught up with a couple of other TBN people. Return trip was again almost exactly 7 hours as well. 350km total. And I need to find a more comfortable bike seat, the one I have is painful to the point of complete distraction from the ride itself. Other than my butt I feel fine, could do another 170km tomorrow if I had too I think.
Next weekend the TBN does this same ride again (toronto-to-niagara-to-toronto)....only they do it in one day (double century). If anyone is interested. I'm going to be busy though....
that's about it, everyone else bailed I guess? or slept in?

****ty man. I hope you are OK. Any help from the police? They dropped the ball when that happened to me, even though I had the guy's license. I still have a fork somewhere if you need it-but the chrome one I told you about was actually bent-I noticed it when I put a wheel in, and it was off center. No idea how it got that way, so I threw it out to be safe. I have a lugged columbus SL fork, it's big though, and green. Not sure if you can thread it down that far, have to see if the steer tube is butted or not.

Sounds like you guys have had some crazy cycling adventures recently... I was just in the Basque region of south-west France/north-east spain doing a little touring while my friend Diva surfed. Its all hills, pretty much, and I was on my track bike with single fixed 49/17, so my legs are done for for a little while. Still it wasa absolutely incredible, probably one of the best places to cycle in the world. Next time I'll need something with gears though. All the french and spanish were cheering me on and saying how ****ing crazy I was to ride a pignon-fixe through the region (all the other bikers were on really hot road rigs with a billion gears and club spandex). I got given lots of free wine water cheese and bread but I didn't really end up taking may pictures (hard to use an old school SLR on the move). Anyways, we're going to Holland in a couple of days but I won't have my bike with me because there won't really be much time to do any riding. On Canada day I'm heading to Grenoble to study for a month and I'm really looking forward to doing some touring through the Alps (may have to borrow a geared bike off someone), and to ride at their indoor velodrome. Hope all is well with you folks!

the route was cool (scenic and no traffic), way up north out of missasauga around brampton then back down into stoney creek and up the escarpment, through all the vinyards and through Welland. It was slightly different coming back but not by much.
I wouldn't call it support, a guy with a truck took our overnight gear down there and everyone had a copy of his cell phone number if they ran into trouble. But it's not like there were vehicles following us all the way down. Everyone was pretty self sufficient, which is great I love that kind of stuff. If someone strips a crank (which did happen) they should be able to temporarily fix it or find another solution on they're own (or the help of other riders).
It was hard to tell how many riders there were, when I showed up at the start some had already left, others were still arriving. I'd say by the registration list there were around 50 that left from High Park and another 20 or so the left from Stoney creek probably. But on the road I only ever saw maybe 4 other people the whole time.
I'm surprised I didn't see you there, ****ty news about the fork...
I'm inspired by the guys who plan to do this weekends 320km ride in one day. By the end of the summer I'd like to be able to ride to my parents place (an hour north of Peterborough; 500km round trip from Toronto) in one weekend.
I'm trying to put in the miles now.
