I don't get why they chose subway stations for the bike lockers. You can't bring the bikes on during rush hour (when you'd want to) anyways...?

I guess they serve as employment nodes in the area? That way, cyclists can keep their bikes locked up if they want to travel further or if they work nearby.

They're also city owned property and are staffed pretty regularly.

That's exactly why they'd chose the subway stations. So people can ride to the subway and then leave their bike there while they're at work/school/etc.

edit: also, the only camera-monitored bike lockup I know of downtown is at MEC. There are likely others, but that's the only one I know of for certain.

Really? Have you ever seen the cctv monitors for that/those camera(s) inside? Was any staff member around to keep an eye on them? I've never seen the cameras there but it would be pretty sweet if there was a bit of extra security to make use of.

There's a guy who's a regular at C.T. - he rides a 2006 Bianchi 9-2-8 lugged carbon frame w/ full Campy Chorus and absolutely adores the bike. Since he takes the bike everywhere and locking it up on the street is obviously not an option, he just shoulders it and brings it in anywhere and everywhere he goes. Obviously this raises the hackles of security guards across the GTA. That being said, I think I'd rather tell security to piss off and a business owner that my bike stays or my money and I leave vs. risk the bike getting stolen or just not being able to take it out on certain trips.

I empathize with businesses that have to deal with cumbersome objects moving through their store (strollers, bikes I guess) but at the same time I don't use my bicycle as a battering ram and I know the odds of it getting stolen if it doesn't come in with me.

On a completely unrelated note, what the hell do Wes and I have to do to get some sponsorship money out of you people?! Speak up, we've each got almost two grand to raise! No, I will not make out with him in the bushes for cash ... but I will make out with you.

Begging is always a good start. Proceed to grovelling. Edge towards debasement, but don't go too far or it will become too pathetic. Being too pathetic engenders contempt, at least in me. I need a glimmer of self-respect to let me know you do have a last vestige to lose unless I pony up some cash or something.

ps. Why would anyone steal a Lemonde?

I haven't seen the monitors or anything, no. But I've seen the camera, and there's a sign saying that it's monitored via CCTV 24-7 I think. Probably not actively monitored though I would imagine... but recording. Not really the same thing, but it's more security than your typical curbside post affords.

I'll start at $0.50 and see if that works.

Bah. Bike lockers for you to lock up at stations? Useless. Put one on campus and then we'll talk. The whole point of riding is to avoid transiting downtown, or anywhere near anywhere where you could bike.

I think I was talking Friday night at the pub about this handheld traffic guage you could get on the West coast of the US. Well, coincidentally I just saw a blog post (http://radar.oreilly.com/archives/2006/05/trafficgauge_rocks.html) about it and found out more information (http://www.trafficgauge.com/). Maybe I had this conversation at work though, I'm not sure. :)

I phoned Cavern bike shop Saturday and asked for a flip/flop wheel or a fixed wheel so I could try fixed on the pinarello they said they had them so I went today all excieted:D to get one and the wrencher said they had none:eek: , my heart was crushed:cry: so I went on a sad ride home along the lake:(
My humblest apologies. Sunday is my ride day so I was not here yesterday. Chris...my fill in guy....doesn't have a complete handle on our stock and overlooked our economical fixie wheels. Consider the inconvenience and disappointment worthy of a 20% discount. Again my apologies but I have to get a ride in sometime ;)

Rob Bikeophile had his bike locked up at MEC while across the street having some lunch. Some scumbag managed to make off with his well broken in Brook's saddle while it was there. Don't succumb to a false sense of security. I am a little ways from the core but all are welcome to lock up at the shop...and rest assured...NO ONE will **** with your rig

I'm so lucky that I get to park in the Executive's Underground here at work. Quite secure.
Inaccessible to public. Had my birthday(40th)... OMG fun!!!!!! My lovely wife and kids got me 40 gifts and hid them about the house and then my daughters made clues, .... too much fun, I'm a lucky guy.
Books, clothes, new bike pants, jacket and shoes on the way....SHOES!!!!!
But the COOLEST BY FAR is this silver bike chain ring they got me, built just like an actual bike chain but immobile (it is a ring afterall). I have a couple pics of it I can upload this evening, can't stop looking at it. Hope everyone had a good time at JetFuel, and had a good week-end.

I have to lock up on UofT campus, which I can only imagine is a great thief target. ugh. I'm considering starting to bring my bike upstairs with me every morning. That's what I did in my old job, but I had an enclosed cubicle there with room for my bike plus I was only on the 2nd floor. Here we have a tiny elevator, I'm on the 4th floor, and everyone's cubicles face away from the centre of the room (ie. no enclosure).

Anyone here looking for a 1" threaded track fork? I have a pearl Rossin track fork, with purple logos on the forks. Its steer tube should be long enough to put on a 54-ish frame.

I am leaving the city on Thursday morning, and am willing to let it go for $20. I live at Roncesvalles and Queen.

these days i'm lucky enough to be able to bring my bike inside at work and stash it in our storage room. don't even need to lock it there. i used to have to lock it outside at yonge/bloor and i never had anything stolen, maybe i'm just lucky. i think the ticket is to use two differnent kinds of locks. maybe a heavy NY lock that you can leave where you normally lock up and a lighter cable lock. loop the cable through both wheels and up through the saddle if there's room. it's a pain, but if you're only lock/unlocking once a day, not a big deal. i'm thinking i'll go back to this plan when i start at george brown in the fall.

i read somewhere that dentists have the highest suicide rate of any profession. probably stems from the fact that all of your patients don't really want to see you, that their only memories of you are of pain and discofort. i guess they start to take it personally. they should do double duty as massage therapists so their patients have something to look forward to.

He mentioned this to me once at Cavern and I think that was awhile ago, wasn't it? Because MEC has always had cameras but they have never had signs up saying that there was video surveillance. I put it in their suggestion box and they emailled me to say that the would put them up and sure enough, about 3 months ago, they put up some signs.

Last week, I was driving by MEC and saw a guy using a hacksaw on a lock out in front. It was probably a case of a misplaced key because it was a really crappy looking bike and it was broad daylight but I called MEC up anyways and said "Hey, there is a guy sawing through a lock out front!" and the guy on the phone said "I'll take care of it!" and threw the phone down fast and, I would assume, ran out to check on things. I love those guys.

cavernmech - i forgot if i asked you already (ignore me if i did): what do you have in the way of 1" threaded headsets? i'm looking for something cheapish, steel if possible for the pink bike. i don't think i can salvage the one it came with. what do you charge for installation?

* Please only say you want to go if you can definitely go. This should be a solid list of people who are interested. I don't want to get to the point of narrowing down a date and then have a bunch of people say "oh, I don't think I can afford it" or something. Figure $50 or so (correct me if I'm wrong please!) and basically a full Saturday. We can maybe go up for the intro class, do that, grab some dinner someplace, and then stick around for the evening races.
