Rides and Races - Toronto Fixed

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've got some 32 hole Alex rims on my cross bike that are a little shallower than the V's. There was also a deeper section model available, but I thought it was a little excessive looking. I peeled the ugly a$$ed stickers off them before I built my wheels, and I don't remember the model, but they were relatively cheap. $35 ea IIRC. Got em at Urbane.
They are not light rims, but they are really strong. I have been beating on them in the DVP mtb trails regularly for over a year with no truing required. (except once.....the front when I got doored by an SUV-minor touchup......@#$%#$* SUV drivers).
I finally got my bike back from the shop, can I tag along if anybody's going riding?

Yup, it does (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/torfix/).

LOL, true. It'll take me maybe an hour and a half to get to the area...where are you riding, downtown?
Edit: ^Exaggeration in italics: it would probably take me at least 2 hours. An hour to Newmarket, then an hour to Richmond Hill.

Just when I thought I was out of the woods, NSERC decides to pull my summer research grant funding because my study doesn't fall under the umbrella of their "mandate statement". I have until Monday to come up with a completely different project. Feel free to CV sans me, fellas. Doesn't look like I'm going out anytime soon.

I planned a project which studies the effects of background music with different parameters (manipulating tempo and mode, etc.) on the agitation of dementia patients. Apparently it doesn't focus enough on "basic processes of psychology", which is what NSERC is interested in. Although I thought my hypotheses for a cognitive vs. affective model was pretty "basic processes". Bleh. Anyways, now I'm writing up something on phoneme and pitch change perception.
Wow. I just realized that no one will understand or care about anything I just wrote. Anyways, the point is, feel sorry for me because I'm sitting at my computer writing up a research proposal instead of being outside riding like some of you lucky barstards.

Ah, so will you be riding on Bloomington and Ninth Line? Hmm, that way I could just take 48 down all the way to Ballantrae and take Lakeshore Rd. Ever had the Ballantrae burgers?
operator
05-10-06, 01:25 PM
Yah, usually I go across elgin then up ninth to teh lake. I think I had a burger there before. As it's looking right now i'm too lazy to go that far so maybe just up to Lake Wilcox (slow ride today).
^Well, I'll bike down Yonge and see if we meet up. I'm wearing a yellow windbreaker on a silver brodie. Who knows, maybe you'll be going north as I travel south.

My girlfriend would totally understand. She talks like that half the time anyways.
PS. She has decided that she wants that pinarello frame in the beaches. Because its so shiny and pretty... and because I spent like an hour telling her how awesome italian steel bike are... and because I took her on ebay and showed her how expensive they are as well.
So is everyone going downtown now?

While I can say I probably only understood the top 2% of what you're talking about, I feel like buying you beer until you explain it all. CogSci and that ilk is super interesting.. I need to read more. I've read some Oliver Sacks and also "Mind Hacks" by O'Reilly Publishing. :D So the understanding is at a minor level, but the caring is far from nonexistent. :P

I'm already downtown, but I'm in office clothes, not riding clothes. If anyone wants to meet up, just name a time and a place. I'm only about 10 mins from home, so I can easily ride home and change.

Oh man, I got offered a grad position in a brand new lab at York University that had the most insane EEG nets. They were lit up and stuff. And there were these things that were supposedly cameras, but really they just looked like giant beach balls on sticks. Mad braaaain sciiiencccce.

I don't think I can do a ride on Friday.. a friend of my is defending their PhD thesis on Friday and having a celebration bash in the evening. :)
I think I might go home, get changed and then ride down to the Ex and do some laps. If anyone wants to find me, that's likely where I'll be. Unless of course someone comes up with a better plan in the next hour or so.

Also, Oliver Sacks is the ****. He spoke at Con Hall sometime this year but I couldn't make it. Too bad, he's supposed to be a great lecturer. Wes, I assume you read "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat"?

Yeah, I wanted to go to that too. :(
And yeah, that's the one I read. I have a few of his other books in my wishlist. :)
I'd also recommend Mind Hacks (both the book and site (http://www.mindhacks.com/)) to anyone interested too as it uses examples you can try yourself to illustrate pretty much every weird little quirk of the brain. :)
