If you weren't on a fix, i'd tell you that your seat height was too high. But you should check out your cleats first for wear. Even riding more upright or in a different position can cause knee pain.

I read somewhere that if you're having soreness in the front of your knee you should make sure your seat isn't too low, but if it's the back, perhaps your seat is too high (and you're hyper-extending the joint at the bottom of your pedal stroke). I'm considering picking up a different stem since if I made my seat any higher right now my bars would be too low.

I haven't changed anything in my set up recently though, so I think this is likely just something that has built up over time, especially (as TJ mentioned) since I've stepped up my distances lately.

Yeah I read the same page too, except they forgot to mention that if your saddle is also too aft it'll cause the same problem. So moving seat lower = moving seat forward a teeny bit and problem solvez0red.

See this fit stuff pisses me off.

I've done the same thing, move it down a half inch .... move it up a quarter, forward, back , forward again slightly. I've found that as one's riding situation changes, it can necessitate the adjusting of one's position ever so slightly. New longer distances, new route....pumping a higher gear(N/A), cruising vs. pushing. If I crank home HARD it'll hurt the fronts of my knees as I'm really pullin back as I go over on my roatation, if I cruise home reasonably nada.

while we're on the topic of shoes.. has anyone had problems with the buckle on sidi dominators? the buckle on my right shoe fell off which i thought wouldn't be a problem since i could just screw it back. i torqued it on pretty tight but now it doesn't move/swing at all. it's also more difficult to thread the strap through and after all that, it still falls off every now and then!... still a great shoe though.

jyossarian, any luck with finding cycle therapy? google maps should give you exact directions from where you're staying.
I also busted one of the releases on my Domi's. Only one of the two release levers broke and I have been able to use em anyway without replacement. I have owned most of the big name shoes over the years and still find the Sidi's to be among the best going. That said they are stupid expensive. Gotta pay for that Italian styling I guess. It nice to have a shoe that doesn't look like Walt Disney threw up all over em. Europe Bound has some nice Diadora Mtn shoes right now for $90 I believe. A messenger buddy of mine just bought his second pair after the first blew up after 2 years. 2 years under a messenger seems pretty durable to me.

Over time I've found velco can full on let go, and after a few years depending on the quality of the velcro can be downright useless. It stretches and I've had velcro downs that weren't velcroed all the way along the strap. I have long, skinny feet and have ended up using less than an inch of closure to hold my shoes on, as I cinch them down tight, usually more than the average normal footed wearer.

That Moots is a sweet lookin' ride.
I do so wish I could get my hands on a year one or two Trimble(sp?) MTB from back in the day.

Bear in mind this design is almost 20 years old now. Hey I got excited when AlpineStar made E-stays
Check out the crazy hunka-hunka- aluminum stay/dropout...made for a nice opener too.
good luck finding one of those....most of em are in the Carbon scrap pile now. :p

Yea, they broke real fun. A couple messer brethren in MTL were factory riders and they'd jump em off stair cases. I just love the design of the frame, it rode like a tank with a gyroscope in it.

Why does your building suddenly look like it's made of toothpaste?

I glanced at your page:

Goal: $2,000
Raised: $920
Sponsors: 12
46% of goal achieved

... which seems to be slightly out of date.

Oh, and yes ... expect gas money from me.

All this shoe talk, just in time. I was planning to pick up a new pair anyway, but now I need to even more-I snapped the sole on my cheap specialized shoes riding trails last night. Anyone have experience with the Sidi bullet 2's? I'm thinking of picking them up, as I have a gift certificate from MEC. They are kind of pricey at 170 bucks-and don't look much better made than the cheap shoes. Still, I am tired of these cheap POS shoes blowing apart after 8 months of use. I'd like to get a couple of seasons at least.

Hey, you should come out and ride with us at Critical Mass tomorrow evening! :)
Sorry, already made plans w/ SWMBO, but 2 weeks should give me an oppty to ride somewhere and maybe grab a cuppa coffee. I'll probably be looking for route suggestions since riding to the Beaches and riding the Martin Goodman trail can be fun, but also limiting.

they may look the same but you'll most likely find sidis are much more durable and well designed. if you don't get multiple seasons out of them i'd be suprised.

Jeebus. I've had my shimano shoes since about 1994 and they went through a few years of regular abuse with at least one long group ride per week and a bunch of races every year, plus all of the regular riding since then. I'm not using them daily now, but I still rock them on longer rides. The tread is pretty chewed up, but all the seams are holding and the velcro still works perfectly (knock on wood). I guess they don't make 'em like they used to! :)

I think that's exactly what it is. I had some old answer MTB shoes from the 90's that were awesome-(and ugly as sin-bright blue with orange). They were made in italy, and lasted for years. Now all of the shoes seem to be so cheap-cleats ripping out, heels come unglued etc-and the fit is terrible.

I thought it might be nice to give y'all a little slice of some of the Bike Week(s) activities that I highlighted in the guide. I'm going to try and make it out to as much as possible as I've never really taken much advantage of it in the past.

i have a pair of the previous incarnation. they are a nice light pair of pants with material similar to a windbreaker shell so they're not for cold weather, but they're not bulky either. they are were cut very "euro" in the last batch and so despite the fact that i bought an XL and i'm a 34 waist, i'm still kind of squeezing into them. i see now they're offering them in proper waist sizes, so i'm tempted to pick up a size 36 and see if that's better. but seeing as i just dropped serious $ on a new camera i think i'll stick with my old cut off dickies.

Hey, go figure - we've got a bunch of 2006 Adidas footwear for 50% off ... all men's size 9. See ya soon (1114 Queen East).

*sigh* ... that felt dirty. And those probikekit.com deals are pretty awesome, I must admit.
Hey eyefloater, thanks for the shoes. It was good to meet and talk w/ you. I'll probably give the shoes a workout tomorrow (gotta make sure they work y'know). ;) :)

jyossarian, any luck with finding cycle therapy? google maps should give you exact directions from where you're staying.
No problem finding the place and even better, no problem finding a parking spot. I know I know, drive a car to a bike shop? My wife was w/ me and didn't want to ride on my handlebars and she doesn't have a bike so I had to drive. She did like the looks of the Breezers though which tells you how far apart we are when it comes to bikes.

Enjoy the shoes - let me know what you think of them.

Oh, you're in town for the next two weeks which puts you here for Bike Week. Check Somnambulant's post about that further up on this page for info of what's going on. There should be more than a few chances for you to get out and meet some other people from the forum.

you guys see the new sit n' spins from UTW?
and who has these again? Some feedback would be awesome before I drop the ball on a pair.

I have a couple of pairs. One's a prototype, I think from before they were even in production. The other is, I believe, the first design they sold. I'm too fat for both of them now :( but when I fit into them they're awesome :D

Oh, and I've been wearing Sidi Dominators for around 4 years now and they're still in excellent shape. I recommend them to all my customers even though my store doesn't sell them :p

Have YOU seen them? I don't think I'm a big fan of the old design. I like some form with my function! :) If I'm dropping that much money on a pair of cycling-specific shants I'll go with the Chrome Shins. I keep meaning to ask Robin what he thinks of those. I wonder if he's lurking. :)

jeremeywhitehorn/darkmother: you guys are going to do the hairshirt this year right? I have ambitions of going on it.

I'm considering it, but I'm not on track milage wise. I'll have to really step it up in the next few weeks if I want to finish it in a reasonable time.

Yeah, I'll be checking out the festivities for bike week and I'm also thinking of doing the Heart & Stroke ride on the DVP next weekend. And thanks for the tip about Somnambulant's bike week post. I didn't see it on the first scroll through.

ps. there's obviously much more to bikeweek (http://www.toronto.ca/cycling/bikeweek/) than my list. That's just the stuff that I highlighted. :)

c'mon! they're not that ugly! believe it or not they look better than the pictures indicate. if you're looking for alternatives, the hypnotic designs knickers (http://www.hypnoticdesigns.com/'05hanksterreduced.html)are on sale now to make room for a new design. i have a pair of these and they are not too shabby. a little bit warmer than the UTW so not for summer use. i've seen the chrome shants at curbside; they look pretty nice but at that price i'd rather have 4 pairs of shortened dickies...
