Rides and Races - Toronto Fixed

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

What are you kidding? I'm all about somnambulation since like last fall. You can find me as the tall guy on a grey fixie with a ridiculous 'retro' blue tour de france jersey.

Hey all.
My girlfriend and I are huge fans of our fixed gear project (literally, we're sharing the same bike - it's a bit too big for her and a bit too small for me). I just wanted to toss a greeting out there.
We're in Kensington Market, btw.

New Burrito place in Kensington????!!!
I love Burrito Boys (Adelaide and Peter) so I am always up for new eats! I will try to make it, but like I said we have plans, so I am not a "for sure"
If I am there, for those of you who haven't met me, I will be on my blue spicer with the Orange "BIKEOPHILE" decal (hard to miss). I will wear something pink

Shiznaz is talking about "Big Fat Burrito" - It's on the east side of Augusta, just south of Bikes on Wheels. That place is always packed - good, cheap food. I like it as well because it's one of those places where you can lock your bike up outside and still have it in sight / within arm's reach.

I'm actually off at 1:00 today (Summer hours at the office). Maybe I'll go for lunch!

hey ladies,
work is killing me. it doesn't look like i'll be able to make cm at 630pm. big surprise. maybe i can catch the tail end of it somewhere.. but i know how hard that's going to be. bikeo, can i give you a call and find out where it's at?
so i was born in montreal, raised in upstate new york, on the shores of lake ontario.
i just watched strange brew, and i said, "goddamnit, i'm goin' back to the homeland. (kinda.)"
montreal would be too intense, i dont speak a lick of french. so, toronto-ho!!!
just thought i'd add this slightly relevant anectdote.
will i be in a state of unbearable culture shock?
is the beer truly stronger?
i am i forever doomed to be hated for my american upbringing?
is the beer truly stronger?
ummm....

Quick question:
This winter I'd like to learn how to build my own wheelset. I've never done it before, and I don't have any of the right tools. I've read a few articles on the process, but I really haven't sat down with a spoke wrench yet and made things happen.
Anyone know a place around town that would take the time to teach someone this? Even if it's a mechanics class (that costs money to take) or whatever, I'd be interested in learning.

hey CM dues.. nice to meet you on the ride Friday evening. Had an alright time, although if it lasted any longer the 1km/h riding would have made me snap I think. :)
Do any of you guys get together for regular rides? I'd like to start doing that again, but I haven't in years and years, and always on a mountain bike group ride. Anyone up for doing some relaxed rides, perhaps ending with beers? :)
eyefloater: sorry, no idea. Perhaps you could try calling around to a few shops just to see what they say. Even if they don't offer anything themselves, they might be able to point you in the right direction. I like these guys (http://www.ucycle.com/), personally.

Haha. The guy with the stereo told us to slow the pace down when we were up front. I looked at my speedo and it said 9kph :/ Was great fun though - except that dude who got ticketed by the asshat cop.
eyefloater: all you really need is a spoke wrench and some patience. Building a wheel isn't hard. Well the front is usually easier than the rear. I'd start with a front.
Et al: I'll be downtown at like 3 on Tuesday. I'm up for a ride then.

"obstructing traffic".. he was at the head of the pack, and I was near the end, so I didn't see it go down.
Meanwhile less than 5 minutes later we all ride right past a large delivery truck blocking the entire curb-lane on Spadina. People were giving the cops ****, but they didn't seem to care. lame.
Critical Mass is the last Friday of every month.. but I wouldn't mind getting together some other time. Either an evening or a weekend morning. I'm pretty busy all this week though.. My bday is this coming weekend so I've got party throwing work to do. :P

... Alright, I'll build the wheel on my own - you take it out for the first test ride. ;)
Seriously though, I'm a fan of the people at Urbane as well. I'll drop them a line and see what they say.

out of curiosity, what sorta gear ratios are you guys running? I'm running 46x16 on both the fixed and free sides of my wheel. According to a calculator I found online that's 76.76 gear inches.

Like I mentioned earlier, I'm super busy this week so I don't think I can make it out tomorrow. Are you at St. George every Wednesday at 6:30? I just work at Bay/Davenport, so I can easily just grab a quick snack after work and then pop over to meet you.
I just want to start a bike gang is all.. ;)

Big roadie group ride, leaves from Bayview and Laird at 9:00 am on Saturday and Sunday. 70-100km depending on what route you choose. Pace is anywhere from fairly relaxed at the back of the pack to pretty damn quick at the front. Lotsa lotsa lycra.

Cool, thanks for the info. I had a bad experience at that place a few years ago though, so I'm not really itching to go back. I asked about getting a wheelset built up w/ MA3s and the guy working there told me they don't work with rims of that low quality ... and just left it at that. That left me with a sour impression and my money going to another shop.
*shrug* Maybe he was having an off day.

Lotta attitude in Toronto bike shops, what can I say? I have experienced that at pretty much every downtown bike shop. I like Urbane, but even they give me attitude now and then with my ghetto rides------------I brought in a Shimano WH-535 wheel I found in a dumpster and they told me it wasn't worth fixing. I took it to Sporting Life and they trued it and gave me 3 new spokes for 15 bucks. Meh. Stick to big shops like Sporting Life, Dukes or CyclePath to avoid the elitist schlock or suck it up.

If that was last year it was probably the guy I hired off my race team to fill in at the shop. Got lots of complaints about him and he is long gone. If you came in and asked me about MA 3's I would not only recommend them but keep them in stock. K.

Yeah, I meant "suck it up" like "don't think about it, just go elsewhere", not "suck it up and deal with the attitude to get the job done". I re-read what I wrote and it doesn't make much sense, sorry.
