Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I still find it counter-intuitive that road bars are bigger than mntn bars. :)
My cross has wider bars than both I think; makes it sometimes difficult to lane-split. ;)

aka. why Wes wants a 29'er.
Have you tried one yet? I have a standing offer from Hugh down at True North in Guelph to come down and ride the local trails with him. He has a stable of loaner 29er's for folks to try. He is a true believer in the fully rigid 29er and I am dying to try one. Maybe you would like to accompany me?

While the diameter is bigger the wall thickness is much thinner. Big diameter + thin wall equals light but stiff. Mountain bike bar diameter just came from an existing size that was adopted by the early mountain bike builders. Easier to just use existing parts that brake levers would work with.
it'll totally drop the bars below the seat, I haven't had that hard a position for years, but the need-for-speed is calling me.... can you hear it? Bonus is I still have the spacers on my fork if I need to adjust further.
That's why I got a look ergo stem. I just need to paint over the hideous yellow and it's good to go.

i think we were talking about the clamp diameter, not so much the width. although some of those downhill risers are wider than my top tube is long.

Eyefloater post a pic of your old KHS track bike

Add a different saddle, road brake on the front, Ambrosio rear wheel built by Cavernmech (though he didn't know that until now), Sugino Mighty Competition cranks ... Oh, and all the decals are off the frame.
But it's still orange. ;)

Yeah, most definitely. In fact, I think you may have mentioned something about this in the park after CM recently. I'd love to take one for a spin. Just let me know when.

So, is anyone up for some skid-fest and trackstand ruckusing tonight? Me and a couple of friends are gonna ride around the downtown core financial district tonight at around 930pm.
After watching that SF Fixie video, I gotta step up my game... Or start one :o

Ya that video was crazy, i need to find my game after watching that!
Need to find a slippy floor outdoor type place.
If you head out at 9:30am(haha) on a weekend let me know!

I've been invited here by the lovely 32flavours so I thought I'd post a short bit about why I'm actually here.
I'm a (kinda) n00b cyclist who's in love with her bike and terrified of traffic. I made a post a while back in one of the other forums looking for group rides and lamenting that the TBN rides all start too early for me to get to (I work until 6:00pm). 32flavours said you y'all ride together sometimes and I'm totally down with that (as the young'uns say) as long as you don't mind riding with someone who'd got shifters next to her brakes ;)
I've also just started commuting to work (9.5km each way) which I find terrifying and exhilerating all at the same time. Any tips on dealing with downtown traffic is most appreciated. I'd still like to ride with some more experienced riders now and then (safety in numbers and all that) just for fun, so if you're ever organizing a ride, drop me a line!

Welcome to the forums! Regarding d/t riding:
1. door prize: look through the rear windows of cars and at their side mirrors to see if anyone's inside.
2. streetcar tracks: cut the angle as much as you can and try to unweight the bike a bit when you go over.
3. cabs: pure evil. you'll get doored by passengers, cut off when they pull over of a fare, etc.
4. intersections: don't ever pass someone on the right. that'll be the exact moment that they turn (even if they're not signaling) and then you're in trouble.
5. your rights: don't be afraid to take the whole lane if you don't feel safe otherwise. it's your legal right.
That's a lot of "bad things" info, but you'll also enjoy a great set of rides on your bike everyday, fun exercise, more money in your pocket, etc. etc. etc. Post a picture of your bike sometime and I'll say hello if/when I see you on the street. What's your commute, btw?
Edit: got my spell on.

I can vouch for China town cement crosswalks being exceptionally slippery when wet, particularly during high speed turns.

just ride more. mere exposure to cars squeezing you left and right will assist in the growing of larger balls (or lack thereof) to handle the congestion :D
soon enough, you'll be splitting lanes like nobody's business!

My commute into the financial district is always pretty hectic. I ride along Adelaide from Bathurst to Bay St, and then down to Front. On the way home I take Richmond instead of Adelaide. I think I need to find a new route... despite there being 4 lanes most of the way cars still feel the need to buzz me, honk at me and tailgate me. The road is also super crappy and criss crossed with degraded streetcar tracks. They should dedicate a lane on one of those streets for bikes... there is so much room for it. I can see the fear in alot of the bike commuters eyes going along there during rush hour, and I've had a few close calls already. The safest parts of my commute are when I run red lights on some of the smaller streets crossing Adelaide because I get a nice stretch of road without any traffic going by me.
I find a good tip is to always do alot of shoulder checks when you know a car is coming up behind you. This makes the driver acknowledge that you exist and they will tend to give you a little more room and will pay more attention to your upcoming actions. Also signaling helps alot at getting cars to give way to you.
I've always found oneways to be a biatch, particularly adelaide having just about been smeared there myself. Second the shoulder checks with the caution that a shoulder check isn't enough if you want to change lanes etc. Cagers don't often interpret a shoulder check as anything at all assuming they even see it (note the almost smeared comment above -- I'd shoulder checked to change lanes but didn't anticipate the 60km/hr approach of the delivery van a block away). Always, always, signal your intentions.

Act like a vehicle, but take the law in your own hands when the situation demands it. Always leave room between you and trucks and buses; and I second the caution about taxis (give them lots of room). Be sure when you do a shoulder check to look into the eyes of drivers, and recipricate by sometimes giving drivers the benefit of a doubt.

As soon as I hear a malicious honk I start riding in the middle of the lane. Probably depends on my mood the day of.

The other day I was doing a trackstand in the middle of the right lane waiting at a light and this guy pulled up behind me in his car and beeped at me so I look at him and I'm like WTF, so he waves his hand as to say, "move over I want to turn right and you're in my way" so i think to myself I'm not moving he can just wait.
so after he realizes I'm not moving he honks again and tries to swerve around me almost hitting the car waiting in the left lane, and I'm like this guys a fukcing jerk so I move a couple feet over to the left and pull another trackstand right in front of him to make a point that I'm not letting him through.
then the light turned green and I kept doing a trackstand for about ten seconds just to piss him off and then i sprinted away.
I'm not letting drivers get away with that kind of *****, without me messing around with them for a little :D

from bathurst/adelaide > S to wellington > E to spadina > S to front > E to bay? (a bit busy on front at times, though)

Sure, man. I will let you know if I'm heading out for an AM ride. I work Saturdays, so it would have to be Sunday AM. Wait a minute. Sunday mornings are meant for sleepy time....
Went for a quick evening ride in the financial district only to be escorted off the premises and the TD towers for skidding and trackstanding. Meanwhile, they left the other trials guys alone. What's up with that?
