Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

did anyone attend any of the alley cat events this weekend for Helloween?
like an idiot I completely forgot about it.... I'd kind of like to see photos of whom and where they raced

I was at Magpie on Friday night after CM for food and drinks. Seemed like a good vibe to me, but unfortunately one of my friends didn't agree. So we wound up going up the street for some desert before much started. Although I think they were doing some time trials outside, but I was too busy being warm and drinking beer. :)

jet-san, did you pick up anything at the bike auction? ...i couldn't make it.. got stuck at work.
work stucks.
No, I didn't make it either. Reading the auction listing, it said that the bikes would be sold in lots of 10....I already have 3 bikes, 2 frames and about 6 wheels sitting in my apartment, the last thing I need is another 10, I wouldn't be able to get in the door!

that's brutal. i can't imagine what the family is going through... i picked up a blinky light for my bike. i know how cool it looks but i'll do whatever it takes to make drivers see me. i tend to rush when i'm on the bike as well.. have to slow it down!
speaking about kensington.. i was biking around the park on my way to buy groceries when someone from the darkness of the park yells "HEY A FIXIE!!" ..so not knowing who the hell it is, i just wave.. then some girl yells "IS HE HOT???" or maybe she said "is IT hot". hey, i know my bike is hotter than i am. no jealousy there.
I'm going to try to make it for the vigil ride. I'll see anyone else there who can make it.

Screw the bracket - clip it onto your bag. Mine clips on a loop of fabric that attaches one of the buckles to the rest of the bag. The light's not going anywhere and I can turn it on / off while I'm riding easily.
On the topic of checking peoples' bikes out ... ya, I do that all the time. I'm a dirty perv when it comes to leering at hot bikes on the street.

actually, my rear blinky (one of those mini $3 ones from mec) is done exactly like that! any tips for a front light? don't even start me on the front bracket thing. i hate it.. i've got 3ttt drops and the damn thing doesn't tighten all the way. i thought about making something out of velcro that i can lash the light onto the bar.
i'll try to make the vigil if i can manage to unshackle myself from work.

Friday, November 25th (7:30pm) @ Bloor Cinema:
STILL WE RIDE
Still We Ride is an action-packed glimpse into a shocking
showdown between the monthly Critical Mass bike
ride and police in New York City. On Friday August 27,
2004 in New York City, just days before the start of the
Republican National Convention, 264 people were
arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and 'parading
without a permit' during the monthly bicycle celebration,
Critical Mass. The ritual began in 1992 in San
Francisco and has since spread around the world to over
300 cities. The August crackdown in NYC was the
beginning of an ongoing effort to suppress free assembly
for group rides. The monthly cycle of arrests and bicycle
seizures has forced the bike community into a legal battle
with the city and politicized the very act of riding a
bike. Co-director, Andrew Lynn, will be on hand to
present this 37-minute documentary along with a collection
of short bike videos from around the world. Q &
A welcome. In a brief talk and slide presentation,
Andrew will provide a context for the documentary by
highlighting terminology, expanding on related events,
and providing the audience updated information about
ongoing court cases and the continuation of monthly
arrests. Though the tactics of the NYPD against Critical
Mass might seem like a somewhat isolated and case of
police harassment of bicyclists, it has far-reaching implications.
Still We Ride just might be a wake-up call to
those who still believe we are living in a free society.
Information on the campaigns to stop the arrests will be
available. NYC's cycling community hopes that people
can report back to their own networks and communities
to build cyclist solidarity around these issues. You can
find more info at the Still We Ride website:

Hey all... first post in this thread, and i wanted to know what the best bike stores in toronto are for fixed gear stuff. I'm going to school in ottawa and am coming back to toronto to celebrate my birthday with family and was hoping to get some shopping done with those sweet sweet b-day cheques :-)... I'm looking right now for a cheap set of bullhorns, brakelevers for said bars, and from there who knows... where ever upgradeitis might lead ;-)
I should be back in the city for the summer months and would love to come out for some rides, there aren't too many people riding fixed in ottawa, and i'm sure i could learn a lot from you guys...
On my way too: Mercxx orange ciocc, yellow wool jersey.. 5:35

I just got home from the ride - glad to see so many people out. Sorry I didn't get a chance to meet anyone beforehand, but my rear wheel blew up on the way there and I have to do an impromptu mechanics time trial just to make it on time.
cavit8, I remember your jersey, but didn't recognize you at the time - I met up w/ operator though on his way to smart kid school. That Bianchi of his was giving me love eyes all the way down Queen St.

i managed to escape work and got to nathan philips at around 630pm..and no one was there. but sure enough at queen and john, was the tail end slowwwwwwwly making it's way to the gladstone. i didn't see anyone because i was bringing up the rear for the entire ride. saw some really nice cruisers/beaters.
how late did everyone stay? it was 730pm and cyclists were still hanging around queen/dufferin. did anything happen after that?
excellent... i've heard of urbane... have to check out cavern fo show
Those are about the only shops I know that deal to extent with fixed/ss. Surreal shopping experience would include Parts Unknown. You never know what you'll find there.
I left around that 7:30. It was a pretty powerful thing. I'm still a little bent out of shape.

Sorry I couldn't make it out last night guys. I had to get a bunch of work done for one of my freelance clients. Hope things went well.
Damn.. the time change is killing me. I'm looking out the window right now admiring how sunny it is, and itching to go for a ride, but by the time I get off work I need to put my lights on. Especially after what happened last week I'm a little wary of going for a hard ride in the dark AND during rush-hour. :S

We should do some kind of beer ride when it gets nicer out, where we quench our thirst with righteous beer at regular intervals. Also we could have a pie break.

Oh, and I had a guy on a red Cervélo fixie talk to me (actually complain about Bloor St traffic) on my way home from work today. I like friendly fixies. :) He appeared to be running a retardly high gear though. His rear cog was TINY. I kept losing him (while spinning madly) and catching him again at red-lights.

speaking of friendly fixies.. last summer i was heading home eastbound along queen when i spotted a girl on a fixie. so i struck up a conversation at a red light and noticed she was running no brakes. she says her morning commute to work is usually in heels. same bike. yikes.. couldn't put a make on the bike.. may have been a surly.. it was painted black and the gear wasn't too large (maybe low 70s).. she was ripping up the road though.

hoorah!
I met the very first fixed rider (possibly messenger) today!
I walked into the xbox 360 promotion store today on queen street W. and when I got tired of testing out the new xbox, I saw a beautiful clipless and brakeless red fuji track bike with a black push the envelope top tube protector chained outside of the store. I quicked ran back in and talked to the guy who owned it.
He was a swell guy and we had a nice chat.
Just wondering if he's a regular at this forum or if any of you guys know him :)
Also, he mentioned that the fuji track bikes could be had for cheap at bikes on wheels.
Does anyone know if its still cheap there?
btw, I am now inspired to get my hands on (whether building or buying a complete) a fixed bike before spring comes!
at the moment i'm just a fixed-bike wannabie/poseur, help me realize my dreams!

That's actually pretty funny since I went to the "xbox 360 experience" this week and I too saw a red fuji track outside locked up when I went in. There was an obvious cycliest in there and we sorta "noticed each other across the room", but I didn't talk to him. I wonder if it was the same guy.

hmm.. i think my watch is about a day fast. i was in kensington the entire afternoon on saturday. totally gorgeous weather. drank too much coffee and couldn't find a bathroom so i just sat around some more. went to parts unknown for a winter beater (couldn't decide on anything) and bikes on wheels just to loiter. they had a single kypto mini there. there's a thread going on about a new onguard mini that's identical in size and looks to the krpyto at probably half the cost. anyhow.. t'was a nice day.
