Rides and Races - Toronto Fixed

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Anybody riding tonight? Doesn't look like rain yet.

Points awarded, nicely played.
Update on Parts Unknown. It was open on Saturday and I had a brief chat with George. He says weekdays he's usually around 11-3 and often after 5. He said the guys at the front have, from time to time, blocked the gate when he is actually there.
So still open for biznay. He didn't mention a move. He had a couple of customers so I didn't talk all that much with him.

i had a bit of a revelation as i was putting a new cog on my big ugly pink bike; i realized that you can install and remove cogs without the aid of a chainwhip. i tried the rotafix method (http://204.73.203.34/fisso/eng/schpignone.htm) and it worked brilliantly. just make sure to put a rag between your frame and the chain to avoid the scratchies. i love when i can find low tech fixes that might come in handy during road-side emergencies. never mind trying to find a 1/8" chainwhip...
anyone else ever tr this?

Yes, and in a pinch use one of your cycling gloves.

Yes only in a pinch. Plan ahead use a chain whip disregard step 4 last sentence. But if stuck a great fix. What gearing are you running on that big boy?
Cheers

i've never owned a chainwhip; this method works fine for installation and removal. i should add that in my version i DO use a lockring and plenty of grease. i may ride a fixed gear but i'm not crazy. oh and the gearing is 42x16 (but the 42 is pretty worn, i have a 44 in my parts box that i'll most likely replace it with) with 700x37 tires. not sure what gearing works out to with that size rubber.

Oh really? You went "wooooaaaah" just as it happened, so I assumed you saw. It was when we were cutting through the traffic (that was turning at Mccaul to go around the closed off portion of Queen in front of the CityTV building) before we went in through the "closed" section behind that streetcar. That's a streetcar junction, so it's got the crazy mess of street car tracks, and when I was cutting between two cars I slipped all over the place on the tracks. I'm totally astonished I didn't go down, actually.

Yes, I woahed the entire situation (streetcar tracks, traffic lock-up, pedestrians everywhere, barriers closing the road). Nice recovery. ;)

I did the same thing this morning turning left from bathurst onto adelaide. Except the streetcar tracks were wet and I started fishtailing all over the place while trying to turn 90 degrees and cars were rushing to get through the advance green all around me. I think the only reason I didn't go down was because I knew a car would steam-roll me if I did!
ps. no harm done on the shiz, as long as I get to keep "THATS MY MAMA!"

Speaking of Scandihoovia, I love the picture of Sweden's King Carl Gustaf on his wikipedia node (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_XVI_Gustaf_of_Sweden)... Just scroll down 3/4 of the way to the "Royal duties and personal interests" section to see the one I mean.
He seems like such a fictional playboy type character.. eg:

Maybe, but not if it's raining:
"Cloudy periods. 40 percent chance of showers early this evening with the risk of a thunderstorm. Wind southwest 20 km/h becoming northwest 20 late this evening. Low 17."

I always feel that way too. Maybe the water lubes up my chain:) Seriously though, I always thought it was just my mind playing tricks on me, because of the longer stopping distance with wet rims.
It was a refreshing rain though.
