Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Mitch and I did pretty well on the hairshirt.

Mitch and I came there with a group of guys but I ended up dropping them all for a while.

There were probably about 35 riders this year.

We all were riding together as a pack for the first while, except for about 5 riders who went full tilt right away.

As the ride went on people were getting dropped, mostly on the climbs, which were pretty tiny, but we still had a nice pack going.

A second break away happened and I just let it be for a while until I wanted to go faster and went alone to try and catch it.

I caught up, but it was only a few minutes before the group joined back together, about 10 people.

I was setting the pace for a long time, some guys could only hold the front for a minute or two, but I was up there for ever and didn't get very tired at all.

After a bit I'd drop back and let another guy lead but then the pack started slowing down, so I'd wait a few minutes and go back you the front.

I just felt really good today, legs didn't feel like they were ever gonna cramp.

My shoulders and neck started hurting after a while but that was just because of how I was sitting, my knees are feeling a bit sore now and I have a nice sunburn.

For the last 120km or so Mitch and I ended joining up and were riding with three other guys, who we finished with.

We were the second pack to finish, I am not exactly sure when the leaders finished, but we caught up to them a few times towards the end so they must not have finished to much earlier.

Took us 11hours and 40minutes, I was happy. Averaged about 30km/h with stops

The wind was brutal, especially on the way back.

I'm coming to Toronto and would appreciate some help/advice...

I'd been riding fixed in NYC for years and just about a month ago I had to sell my bike for cash as I relocated to SF, but in about two months I'll be moving to Toronto. Once there I wanna build up a bike (I've still got my wheels, but thats it), and I need advice as to where I can buy a frame in the city. Or, if there aren't many places, please let me know so I can get something here in SF, where i know I can (although I'm assuming frames are more expensive in SF than TO).

So...all you kids who make up this ridiculously long sticky Toronto thread, please show me some love and give me the inside scoop on the Toronto fixed scene. And hell, if anyone is sellin' I'm looking to buy!

Rather than getting into any c-c or c-t type o' confusion, I'll just tell you, I'm 5'10" and like so many others, looking for a decent lugged steal frame. I don't have the money for a new Cinelli or anything like that though. think a step down from there. A used De Bernardi, an old Madison Track, etc. etc.

Thanks! and I maybe we'll pass each other on the streets in a couple months!

Oh, and PS...since this thread is so damn long, if anyone does have anything to sell, or a good lbs to recommend, please send me a private message or email me at:

greg.nylund@gmail.com

PPS. I'm also looking for an apartment too if you know of any!

Nice used track framesets are getting harder and harder to find. Shops with new stuff here are fairly plentiful. Expect to pay in the $350 CAD range for a decent frameset. As for apartments...try viewit.ca. They have skads of apartments available but it helps to know what area of the city you want to locate in. This city is pretty large in area. On a good note it is a renters market at the moment so there are some pretty good deals out there if you look araound.

Definitely let us know and we can help suggest areas if you're not familiar with the city. You'll want to get on this now as in two months, the University students will be back which can glut some areas of town. Viewit is great although some areas that look like great deals aren't because they're in an armpit area or are at a 24 hr streetcar junction. If you're primary mode is bike, some areas are much better serviced by bike lanes etc. Craigslist is also helpful. I found my place, a two bedroom for $680 +hydro on Craigslist :D

nice work on the hairshirt kaiser boys! in know how hard that ride can be in the wind, especially on the way back as it's blowing off the lake. it looks like the field was fairly close together, time-wise. nice to see that the fastest time went to a lady.

maybe i'll ride it again next year. anyone know the lone fixie rider? i seem to remember emailing him through the FGG about something...

Thanks for the viewit tip! I don't know the city that well. Been half-a-dozen times, but yeah, any tips for neighborhoods would be great! As for "the glut of university students" - count me as one of them...only, hopefully as a 27 yr old grad student, I won't fit the mental image you're picturing.

So yeah...I plan on biking mainly, but after a really nasty accident about 2-3 years ago in NYC on some ice, I'm a bit more wary of riding in icy conditions, so I might like something with some public transportation nearby when the weather isn't cooperating.

So, please, tell me about different neighborhoods, their feel, their price, etc. etc. Teach me about your wonderful city. I have a map in front of me, so feel free to name streets as borders of neighborhoods and I can figure it out. I know NYC and SF pretty good in case people want to make comparisions to neighborhoods there.

Basically, I don't need anything terribly "hip". I've done that schtick. I just want something close enough to food and whatnot...don't need to be a block away from the cool bars or cafes or whatever.

As for frames, $350 CA falls right in the middle of my range, and is a bit less than the prices I'm seeing in SF. On the LBS sticky thread I saw mentions of Cogs Cycle and The Urbane Cyclist...any other hints?

toronto craigslist is good. also check out the "now" classifieds. kinda like a toronto "village voice":
http://toronto.nowtoronto.com/rentals/classifieds/Results?section=4376
there's a tab that you can click to search for roommates. if you're heading to school downtown, you'll find a lot of ads for shared apartments with this. rent can get pretty ridiculously cheap when you're sharing....
cam, $680/month for a 2 bedroom is ridiculous. i want to come to your seminar.

for good bike stores also check out: cavern cycle, bikes on wheels, cycle therapy... toronto's got a lot of em!

IMHO your best bets for housing (assuming you're going to UofT) is between University Ave and Dufferin Ave for your East/West border, and Bloor St. and Dundas St. for your North/South border (although probably further North than that Between University and say Christie). That's more or less my hood (as well as 32Flavours and Cavernmech if I'm not mistaken) and I really love it. I just got a new apartment as well, and I'm just moving across the street because we wanted to stay close... it's going to be the easiest move ever. :)

It's also a really easy commute to UofT. I work there, so I do that commute 5 days a week, 12 months a year. Harbord is a great commute during rush hour because there's bike lanes for most of it (not that it doesn't stop cars sometimes), and the rest is double-lane and you can usually totally take the curb lane.

As for Winter riding... if this helps: I think I took the subway a total of maybe 3 days last Winter. I rode my fixed gear on 23c slicks the whole winter without much trouble at all. The salt Harbord pretty well, so it doesn't ice up much. Of course, all that salt is NOT good for your drivetrain/etc, but that's what fenders are for. :)

ps. when do you need an apartment for? Sep 1? or Aug 1? Any idea what your budget is? I just moved out of a great 1-bdrm. The only reason we're moving is because we want a 2-bdrm. Our old place will be available as early as Aug 1 (since that's when we're moving).

don't rule out going as far west as high park. i live off roncesvalles (dundas west / bloor area) and it is a short commute downtown, about 6 km to u of t, an easy bike ride. if you like the idea of being near high park (sort of like toronto's central park, but not as central) it's a plus, great for doing some training loops and climbs through there. always plenty of places to rent too; not a pretentious neighbourhood.

can't comment on the east end, i'll leave that to the east enders on the forum. west-side!
