I swapped out the carbon fork for my ol' Kinesis aluminium one and I like this set-up a bit more. I love the 53X16 for now but will be purchasing a 48 tooth next week so that I don't hurt myself. Thanks for all the advice guys, have a great weekend on the street.

Might I suggest going with a 17 tooth cog at the back, instead of swapping the ring? 48/16 will give you a whole number (3:1) gear ratio that will result in wearing out 2 small areas of your rear tire quickly, especially if you are skipping or skidding.

Fork is cool BTW.

I might be up for a morning or evening ride sometime this weekend... Not so interested in the middle of the day though since it's going to be disgustingly hot.

Yeah, that's part of it. Also I still need to do some shopping for stuff for the bike rally, packing for my move on August the 1st and also furniture shopping for the new place. So yeah, days are busy. :)

Whoa, thanks, I forgot to think about that. Maybe a 47 (do they make that?) or a 49 would be better. I would switch out the rear but the 16 is nice and it is Dura Ace, so pretty strong. And yes, Operator, I snagged the rims on eBay....I would have chosen something like black but think that the gold colour made them cheaper.

Thanks for the help guys.

No brake dude?

The blinkie lights make up for not having a brake. People think you are a fire engine so they all pull to the right and stop eliminating a need to brake.

that's true about the wear spots, but 48-16, while similar in gear inches, feels different to me. I know,I know, but it's always been the perfect city ratio for me, a good clip at 120+ cadence, a slow easy ride when you've nowhere to be, low enough to assault any hill, high enough to assault any hill fast, downhill is not a problem, a touch more clearance for the front ring, I just love that setup

I did 53-16 for awhile in H-town, but there are no hills there, at all, barely a grade to be found unles you ride on the freeway, which is not what to do. Even on the flats it wasn't much fun in stopngo traffic

The secret to the 3:1 tire problem is to slide it (the rear tire)a few inches a few times a week, or once a week depending on how much you ride/skid. It's a low maintanence solution, and you were going to maintain the bike anyway right?

Well I’ve been rolling with the 48 – 16 for a couple of months now? I like it - it’s fast & not so easy. 3:1 so far so good in the skid patch area no patches yet (tires are about 6 months old) but i’m sure they are coming, as i’m skidding & skipping like a champ yes.
But hope to get a 17t to odd it up.
Cheers
Traveling tomorrow hope to be back on Sunday & would love to get out & (aboat (!) )

Please call off the flat fairy. I have had two flats in as many days, and also my headset, front hub and pedals are all feeling like they need to be rebuilt. Have mercy.

To everyone who is free this coming Saturday. Show your support for FFL by coming on their last ride starting from finch station.

Please also, do not wear a helmet so mother****ing asshats can come and harass you while riding on a public road.

Please also be wary of on the bike assaults. They have been known to happen around these mother****ing asshats.

Heres a bit of info and history on the group riding thing. I don't expect everyone on the street to wear a helmet...it is your choice. Once you move into the realm of group riding or any ride organized by a group, it is a different story. I know that people can be really righteous with the whole helmet thing but the organizers are prolly just trying to protect themselves. The Donut ride used to be the Scarborough club ride. When some jackass that got into an accident decided to sue the club...the riders...basically anyone they could put on the suit, that changed the whole dynamic. The Friends for Life group who organizes this thing no doubt have to have insurance in case of an accident. If you are riding with a organized group the rules set forth by them are to protect themselves from litigation. If someone participating in said ride does not conform to the rules...is allowed to ride...and then ****s themselves up, the FFL would be royally screwed. No insurance company would touch em after that and that would be the end of a very worthwhile effort. When I ran our team any, and I mean ANY...ride that was a team or club activity, the OCA required notification of the date, time, distance and location of these rides, and helmets were mandatory. Any deviation of these rules and we risked having the club thrown out of the OCA. A royal pain in the ass to be sure but if one of my riders ever got messed up on a "club ride" the OCA's insurance would kick in and take care of any damages.
Not to crap on yer rant cause I hate self-righteous people as well.

I understand the litigation stuff. That's why we were in front of them and getting farther with absolutely no intention of mingling with their newb asses anyways. I was there to ride with Shiznaz or whoever came out. This guy came up to me at the beginning of the ride and told me not to ride with them - fine. Then he has to come up again a SECOND time to harass me again spouting off all this ****ing garbage and then swerving across and hitting me at a light after I told him to piss off.

This guy can't even hold a straight line while turning his head and he's ****ing talking **** like he's Lance Armstrong.

We were nowhere near any of the FFL riders except one lady who decided to pace around with us and he STILL has to continually harass me and Shiznaz asking a billion and one questions. ****, that just had to be said or i'd go on a rampage somewhere.

BLAH.

I did my usual "Hey, take it easy! We're all out here to have fun after all" Then they asked us our names and threatened to kick us out of the FFL main ride. So I said my name was Wesley Hodgson and that I don't care if they kick me off the ride! Anyways, it wasn't a bad ride in the end but holy christ was it hot and sunny. I drank about 6 liters and peed about 125ml. Me and rob both kind of bonked out around the 90-100km mark so it was slow going on the flats and hills after that. I ended up clocking 149km round trip; I didn't have the motivation to turn it into a real century. At one point I thought something had slipped into my bike shorts and was jiggling around but it just turned out to be my junk which had gone almost completely numb. After that point I stopped riding on the aero bars

Okay, best bike moment ever:

So today at work it's just me, Phil and Dax still there at close. As we're locking up Dax drags his freeride bike downstairs, which I haven't had a chance to play on for awhile. So I take this thing outside and start ****ing around out in the back lot. There are some random cinder blocks there and about a 3-4' retaining wall held up by railroad ties/more cinder blocks/general rubble. A few minutes pass and then I hear, "OMG Mike that is the coolest bike EVAR!!!" It's of course the neighbourhood kids who are in the shop every single day with their beat to **** SuperCycles. If these guys lived in B.C. they'd probably be sponsored freeriders by now but of course they're stuck in dt toronto with bikes that are horrible. Sooo ... of course we set the 10-13 year olds loose on the 5" travel freeride bike and it's best day evar. Then of course we go back in for supplies: liquor, more bikes.

Total bike count:

- 5" travel freeride bike
- 8" travel downhill bike
- fixed gear bike w/ pursuit bars
- 16" bmx bike w/ no brakes
- 24" bmx bike

So then two hours fly by and by the end of it half of us are bleeding, everyone's taken the downhill bike up/over/off the retaining wall, learned to bunny hop (1' junior record, 3.5' senior record) and do wheelies (contest called off after "from Queen up to Dundas and back" run). Slap a 12 year-old bike geek on a $6000 downhill bike and his head pretty much explodes with glee. Plus, slapping a little kid on a track bike with just stupid drop is always good for a laugh, "How the hell does your bike just balance like that? Dunno man, I guess it just does - here, you try. Oh God my nuts!"

*siiigh*

Plus, the booze helped too. Don't give kids 10% Faxe though.

- Mike

PS. Next week ... if you've got a fun bike, show up behind C.T. after close. Bring libations.

So this is a little late...but....my ex wife had her Cramerotti track bike stolen on Wed. Candy apple red...red rims...Campy hubs and cranks....riser bars with streamers...no brakes. As much as she made my life miserable I would like to see her get it back. If anyone spots it I will give you a nice reward for recovery, or follow the guy and give me a call at the shop.

Hrm, I saw one with a carbon fork parked in front of MEC on Thursday....cannot recall if it had streamers but they could have easily been removed. What size is it? A red Cramerotti track bike will totally stick in people's minds, maybe we can get it back.

About a 54 or 55 cm. It had old school Campy cranks with the uber thick old style chainring on it.

I know this probably isn't the place for it but I just want to post it up here first.
I want to sell off my c-record tubular wheelset because I simply don't have the heart to ride it on the street and I never go to the track. (+ funding for university)

If a cramerotti shows up in scarborough. I'll be sure to shoot the person riding it. :) j/k

That actually sounds like a downright good idea. Anybody else free? It's going to be so hot though that I will probably just want to ride around slowly, complaining about how hot it is. Haha.

I understand the litigation stuff. That's why we were in front of them and getting farther with absolutely no intention of mingling with their newb asses anyways.

If you are gonna ride ANYWHERE near a group ride Homie, you gotta play by their rules. Mob Rules.

well, apart from starting at the same place, we were barely with the group at all. Some speedy girl kept up with us at the beginning for about 10-15 minutes and then rob got a flat and we were passed by pretty much everyone. Then we we were passing people too slow to ride with and the faster people were ahead of us getting further away. We didn't use the same turnaround point and took a different route back. Once we got onto warden we started to see dozens of non FFL roadies in helmets or not. They were as much a part of the FFL ride as us. Given that the ride to lake simcoe is very straight and simple theres alot of bikes on it so its kind of strange that rob got hassled so much for his helmet; there was no way to tell whether he was on the ride or not and I doubt the FFL riders had been hassling everybody training north of the city...
