Haha the kid I work with is buying a SECOND pair of oakley sunglasses in a little over a week (he had just lost his 150 dollar ray bans). These ones are aviator style! Who would spend that much money on a pair of aviators? He ain't gonna have no money left for his first year at university! I've been trying to convince him to spend less or at least buy a pair of glasses that look good but the marketing bug has caught him!

I'm soon on my way to buy some new glasses at the ChinaTown Centre, beef patties to follow?. 150 for aviators? That does sound like too much for a classic style. Oakley have always been hideously over priced--good eye cover though. Anybody have the modern transition lenses? I'm hoping to get them to fade into orange for day riding. I always wished one could get the funky sunglasses in perscription but noooooo.

Back in my irresponsible youth I used to buy nothing but Oakley. After a year in which I spent $1000 (between losing them, dog eating them..those nose pieces are soooo tasty, and breaking them) on fashionable sunglasses I learned the error of my ways and started buying cheaper ones. I don't look as cool but I can buy the expensive tuna to go with my Kraft dinner.

I am a huge fan of the MEC espressos. The optics aren't amazing, but for my applications they are fine. My applications include: throwing them in my bag without a case followed by my locks, putting them in my pockets with my keys, losing them, having my girlfriends dog chew them up, riding with them all through the year in all different light conditions. They work well on the bike, on the slopes, on the boats and on the street.

I can't say anything about surfing but I would imagine anything thats not a goggle with elastic straps would be easily lost on the waves, 'maui jim' or not. The only thing I am missing would be polarization but I think that it is pretty overrated for most applications anyways. 6 dollar replacement lenses are just about the sweetest feature any sunglasses in the world could have.

My one pair of oakleys I owned I lost... never again!

Oh yeah, I convinced the guy I work with not to buy a second pair of oakleys. All I had to mention was 'beer money' and he came to my side.

Were I to buy a pair of oakleys today they would probably be these:

Had a couple pairs of Oakley's years ago, got em severely discounted. Rode with Bolle for a couple years. Wouldn't say no to an Oakley Goggles for rippin' around in the winter. As long as they cover my glasses ok. Being a glasses wearer I suppose I've had better luck with my performance optics.

two things that removed any respect regarding oakley:
-too many rednecks with Oakley decals in the window of their vehicles
-the oakley thump mp3 glasses

also, I think basically everything they've designed in the last 5-10 years has been ugly as hell. I had a pair of m-frames and a pair of pro-frames (goggles). The pro-frames I still have but the (iridium coated) lenses are scratched to hell. I have no idea where my m-frames are. Both had great optics, but the iridium lenses will scratch from a strong breeze.

How about those literal over-the-top glasses they came up with.....urgh.

Flagwear if done right can be really cool, but that weren't it. I didn't know Operator was American.
I remember the Oakley rep giving the new designs to bike couriers in Mtl for a couple years in the 80's, was like being sponsored.
That's where I got my M-frames. I suppose it worked, as it seems Oakleys are the glasses to wear, despite scratch and cost difficulties.

I'm such a stickler for optics, colour shift and contrasts in varied light conditions. I balked at getting all the replacement lenses.

In the US flag burning is consitutionally protected. I'm fairly sure it falls under charter rights in Canada.

On optics, the reason I went with Maui Jim over Oakley was that the Maui Jim's, while more expensive, had signfigantly better optics and were nearly distortion free. Also their polarization is much better then anyone elses I've seen and when your in any glare situation it makes a huge difference. If your the kind of person who doesn't take care of your sunglasses they aren't for you. But they do have many Rx compatible frame and lens sets. Though if you wear glasses get contacts, having your periphal vision back will change your life.

amen to employee insurance! a lot of people abuse it though. a buddy of mine used his $250 to get some non-prescription gucci sunglasses. nasty. two-fiddy is pretty crappy coverage but that's all we get. good lenses alone are at least $150. or maybe i'm blind. say bye-bye to the entire amount if you have astigmatism or need bifocals or whatever.

The most basic of the basic starts at like $35 for regular plastic lenses with no coating, but with a prescription like -4,-3.75 and astigmatism up the wazoo you're looking at double to triple the cost for lightweight lenses, that's not even for polarized ones. And at the end the coverage blows more than a $6 mec espresso replacement lens.

175 frames..60 for lenses (regular price)...so I got 200 taxes in. Nice people.

I sat on them :| The frame is indestructable but the threads sure aren't. Although I like contacts (zero weight on your face, throwaway when they break), it just can't be that good for your eyeballs for some medical device to sit on them for your entire waking hours.

I've never seen mirrored contacts that you could actually see out of. but if you have a link I'd be more then interested.

And high-def laser surgery and give you better then 20/20 vision now

There's lots of small nigglies associated with corrective eye surgery still. Give it like 10 more years.

Like not being able to drive/ride at night possibly due to starbursts in your vision from external lights. Kinda like driving with really scratched up glasses.

Woe pedestrians: they are a ridiculously unaware (or suicidal) bunch... biking 2 minutes from home on St Clair W and this Italian guy continues to walk across the road even though I'm travelling at upwards of 45 km/h and honk my airzound at full volume. He stops at the divided line, but looks as if he thinks he can stroll? (wtf?) to the other side before I move through the lane. I repeat for desired effect, and do a close psych to scare the **** out of him: his response was to mumble incoherently.

Gah, what's with drivers and pedestrians in this city? Do they not understand that cyclists have as much right to the roads as other vehicles? And that a bike traveling over a certain velocity can do significant damage to a human body in a frontal impact?

Not an option with a road shoe. I had the guy on Yonge between Adelaide and Richmond do it for me many moons ago. I am not sure if they are even still there.

i think you are referring to `novelty shoes` that was (kind of) across from spreads (or whatever the current name is) on the east side of yonge. they should still be there.
