It does look good. I think I'm just going to pick up an IRO though and save myself some cash. Impulse buying a $400 frame isn't exactly the smartest thing to do this time of year I decided.

Little bit offtopic but what the hell:
We've each got different requirements and appreciations for different kinds of bikes. High tech, low tech, old, new, Italian, Japanese, whatever. For those of you who would buy a used frameset, what would you realistically be willing to pay for something that was amazing to you?
An auction just ended for a mid-80s 3rensho frameset. $1100 or so USD. That's absolutely insane to me, but then again I'm ****ing broke. What would you all be willing to pay for something that was exactly what you'd been looking for (maybe looking for for years)?
To keep things simple let's say used frame and fork. My limit ... right now .... $400 (CDN).

yea, my limit was basically $400 for the frameset.
I paid $400 for my "dream" frameset w/ cranks and a stem. (I still think I overpaid, but meh, its a unique frame in my opinion + the sense of security dealing with a BF member.)
well eyefloat, at least you have a job!
I don't (but I do have allowance yay!)
and I am currently stuck with a frameset, cranks, a stem, and hubs/cog...
I have about... $400 left for everything else.
will I make it?
I need rims, rim tape, tubes & tires, bars, bar tape, 27.0 seatpost (if only it was 27.2), saddle, and pedals...
and I'm going to get cavernmech to build it up for me :)

Hrm, for 400$CDN, you can get a really nice frame if you are both lucky and smart. A month ago there was a very lightly used Pista Concept with a BIN of 340$USD. I nearly bought it to re-sell (I wouldn't ride it on the street, kinda stiff, I hear) but I couldn't be bothered. Myself, I am cheap and poor and I like the challenge of finding a great deal, so I think that I could get my dream frameset for under 200$CDN. Keep in mind that I am versatile, it just has to be a nice Italian steel frame/fork. Not really that hard to come by, we shall see. My conversion is fine for now ;)

I saw the KHS frame I've been looking for slip by for $350 awhile back ... that came w/ a carbon fork, stem and bars. Stupid no-paycheque week. Where I'm at right now is I've got one utter beater, the shared bike that I'm determined not to ride anymore because my gf gets pissed everytime she has to readjust the seatpost, stem, toeclips, etc. (it's too small for me anyway) and then there's Sputter. I'd like to downgrade Sputter to "winter bike" status, get myself a nice reliable utility bike that I love to ride (ie. IRO Angus) and then slowly chip away at something really nice and unique.
For that my plan is a KHS Aero track. I'm going to find one, powdercoat it British racing green (please oh please with some sassy metal fleck in it), slap a chrome fork on it that matches the rake (preferrably straight blade) and go from there. Given that the Aero Track has a screwy sloped top tube, I have no idea if the 57 will even fit me. I know the 53 will be too small, so this might just end up as a longterm exercise in building a bike for the sake of the process. It'll probably get sold off to someone who can give it a nice home if it doesn't fit. If it does ... well then I'm laughing.
Then of course I'd like to build a 1" pitch path racer ... and a singlespeed mountain bike ... and a cyclocross bike ... and blah blah blah I need more money. ;)

Hey wasted weasel, looking for something like this?
yeah, that's exactly what I'm looking for... I'll order 2 at that price.
my price range for a used frame (and it would have to be something that I couldn't live without) is probably $350 - $400 cnd max. and even then it's a gamble on it being a perfect fit.
But if I'm love with the bike more for it's geometery I would tend to save up the big coin and get a frame builder to custom build one for me with 'borrowed' geometery specs.. I've always liked the way the GT seat stays meet at the top tube just ahead of the seat post, or the forward sloping top tube of the KHS's.... or a pursuit styled frame with a 650c front wheel. I'd get it built out of titanium or something super light and strong... that'd be sweet and I'd put $1500 - $2000 into a frame like that.
hmm maybe next summer..

just out of curiousity...
do you guys drive?
Not any more. My car is taking up space in my garage-space that could be used for many more bikes-anyone want to buy a 1986 Volvo station wagon?:). Insurance is too much for me- those companies have you by the short and curlies. Screw up once, and you are going to pay. I somehow managed to get my insurance cancelled-and now it would probably cost me 6 grand a year or some foolishness.
and I am currently stuck with a frameset, cranks, a stem, and hubs/cog...

ya.. 2 mavic open pro or velocity rims off ebay, $100. spokes, $30. handlebars off ebay, $35. bar tape, $15. seatpost off any LBS no-name, $20. saddle (depends...), $50. pedals wellgo spds from MEC, $50. 2 tubes, $10. 2 tires, $100.
total: ~400. you can get much cheaper tires and cheaper rims to cut it down to 300.

Speaking of insurance foolishness, my sister pays $32 / month for home insurance (she's got an apartment in a highrise). Because I live above a commercial space (read: Kensington Mall) my insurance would be $300 / month. Boo-effing-ourns.

You may want to put a bid down on some of the Rossin's that LaBicletta is getting rid of. Do an ebay search for Track in cycling with "available to the United States". The bikes don't show up otherwise. Their BIN is around $560 CAD, but it looks like they're taking offers. LaBicletta does have a store in Toronto, so it may save on S&H too if they're up here. The frames aren't listed on their website.
Too bad, cause the largest they have is 57 which is about 2cm too small for me at a minimum.
I hear your pain on finding a half decent frame/fork online. I found a 59 cm Sannino, identical to gokiburi's. The bike shop wanted $1300 USD for the frame and fork alone  There was a cherry 57 cm Sannino pursuit frame that went for $200 USD. makes me weep.
I wish I'd jumped on a couple of frames when I started looking about a year and a bit ago. It seems anything remotely my size is priced way out of reach. I'm better off buying a new Marinoni or something...

I'm not really that enthusiastic about the Rossin. Well, check that - I'm not that enthusiastic about the seller. I sent them an email and a message via eBay but I haven't heard anything back. Buying in Toronto would save me shipping but I'd likely catch GST + PST, so I'd still end up over my limit. Besides, those Rossin's are just another (very) nice frame. I'm going to hold out for something else.

$1300 and $200US is quite the range. yikes...madness. 1300US for the frame and fork is sheer lunacy. you could easily go custom or nagasawa for that much. i totally lucked out on my 56cm sannino ($590US.. my bid was for $700 and luckily no one tried to snipe). i did have to buy a new wheelset for the street though because i'm not about to ding up the shiny old school campy record high-flanges it came with. ;)
ceya scored a sannino pursuit but not sure how much he paid for it. cav, you're a big boy which makes the pickings all that much slimmer... [QUOTE=eyefloater]I'm not really that enthusiastic about the Rossin. QUOTE]
I am not sure which one you are looking at but the aluminum Rossin track frames are super sweet bikes. I owned one for 3 hard ridden years...sold it to my buddy 2 years ago and he is still rockin it. Great geo for the street. The steel bike is REALLY steep and has a really short front center....so....major toe overlap on the front wheel. Not a great street bike but nice on the track. The alu version is a really good all arounder.

I think ceya got the bike after I opened my yap on the forum. Honestly, though, it was small as well and who really needs a pursuit bike (except for eyefloater). The Ciocc is fine and I'm not sure a full on-track geometry is well suited for the riding I do, so it may that I'm leaning more to fashion than function. That being said, it would still be fun to expand the stable a bit. It's too bad there's people out there selling these things as if they're antiques. The same shop had some junior track which would be great for my SO as she's pretty (&) short but I can't afford $1 K for something. Finding an old road frame in a 43 has been nigh impossible, but I'll keep floggin' along.
Give me a shout later on. I'm leaving work now and should be home in an hour. We can work out a time for me to give you that Nishiki Olympic frame.

wow..that's one fine looking frame. if this is going to be a $1k dream-bike of sorts, $500 is not so much to drop on it. figure five bills for the frame and another five (give or take a couple) on the wheelset and parts you can scrounge on ebay/share with your other rides.

I always see this guy riding around on a hideous purple coloured cyclops track bike. The color is disgusting, but the bike itself is totally sweet. I also dig that cyclops is canadian and theres really not enough canadian track stuff out there. If I found a cyclops track bike in my size I'd probably shell out a fair buck for it assuming I like how it rides. I ride a sort of trackish geometry bike (spicer AL) and I think I could deal with some steeper angles (not for really long rides though). That and I believe that cyclops is out of production so they will only get rarer

That is Radek's bike. I sold it to him. I am not a big fan of purple..but...that paint job is actually more than one colour. When you see it in bright sunlight it changes colour from purple to bronze when you look at a different angle. Not my style? Yes....hideous?...well to each his own I guess.

Keith, there's discussion in the main forum about clips and straps vs. clipless.
I'm happy with my current setup but I wanted to ask you since you'd be a good judge: what do you see messengers around town preferring, or is it evenly split?
Edit: got my spell on.

12-20-05, 03:20 PM
Fixie guys are going to clips and straps more and more. It can be a ***** finding a decent pair of pedals but they have their advantages. Firstly...if you use good quality straps you will never pull out unintentionally while skidding. I did this using Time pedals in a skid comp many moons ago....the results were not pretty. Secondly....if you find yerself off the bike walking alot then a good pair of sneakers are preferable to walking around like a duck in clipless shoes. I found I was getting some hip and knee problems because of the constant beating my joints took from all the marble and concrete when I was messing. Went to soft soles and the problem went away really quick. And yer typical clipless shoe looks like something Walt Disney puked on, so the style factor can play a part as well. I still use clipless for racing and long jaunts...but clips for city riding.
jedi_steve420
12-20-05, 04:00 PM
If your looking for some clipless shoes that aren't ass ugly I recommend checking out pricepoint.com... I picked up a pair of 661 Launch shoes that have soft sole and are spd for under 70 canadian when all was said and done. They also have some selle shoes for the same price in a wider variety of sizes. Be careful tho cause the 661 shoes fit a little small so I'd say go a size up on whatever your other cycling shoes are. I much prefer clipless simply for ease of use and much better power transfer... I just can't get the hang of the clips and straps.
