SF was unique. As I recall some messengers in San Francisco used baskets into the early nineties, mainly because there was one company (I can't remember the name) that would supply bikes already equiped with baskets.

But Zo bags were being made well before '92 so a lot of SF messengers must have already been using the single strap by the time this video was made.

Well that '92 messenger vid in the states had people using front baskets on bikes. One strap bag = recent?

Thats hilarious. I have a copy of that film here at the shop. I wonder who put it up on youtube? I am actually in a few shots. I am FAMOUS YAY!
This actually has me thinking I should get all my old VHS footage put on DVD. Anyone here have a puter/program capable of doing this? I can go to one of the commercial places but it costs quite a bit. Compensation can be arranged.
Oh yeah...more good news from the racing front. My buddy and all around nice guy Brooks has a 7th and 13th place at the Masters World Track Champs in Manchester, U.K. 7th in the world....not too shabby!

TRaffic Jammer-

Do you have the GG pics up anywhere? or are you gonna put them up somewhere?

I'd like to look at 'em.

Here are a very few..... I've totally blown my upload limit to hell....barely a third of the photos went up, and I haven't even gotten to the party ones yet.

tj, what's the upload limit? do they have to be super high res for people to look at on their computer screens? it doesn't look like you have that many pics uploaded (33?).. a jpeg at 640x480 with minimal compression is still pretty easy on the eyes and not that big for example. i use a great program called xnview for batch processing image files at work. it's best thing since sliced bread and it's free!

I've editted over a hundred shots.... cropping, levels, sharpens etc. I guess the default setting in Pshop for the jpegin was maxed but still. I'll batch out the rest at a lower setting and create another account maybe..... damnit.

somnambulant
09-14-06, 10:32 AM
yeah.. I have a flickr pro account and I usually still reduce all my pics to 700px on their widest size, 72dpi and probably 6 or 8 in the jpeg quality slider. That's enough for most images on the intarweb. Plus I don't want people ripping off uber high-res files of my shizzle (and the uploads are faster, obviously). :P

edit: I had xnview on my pocketpc back in the day. :)

I've tried to create a new account....stupid me added the same email addy and now it's saying oh you want to merge your accounts....blah blah blah....damnit..
I guess lowerinf the JPEGing and resubmitting them wouldn't go anything towards flickr letting me upload more?

Unless...... wes I could FTP the rest of the shots to you, do you have upload restrictions in your Pro account?

That is awesome. I don't know how many times I have crashed and said "I wish someone got that on film" When looked at this way he is actually lucky. He was probably all "Yeah..my bike is creaking but it will be fine"

I usually end up drilling em off. If the heads are fkuced then drilling is prolly yer only option. Pick a nice quality bit that is slightly smaller than the head....drill away...when you get sufficiently deep in the bolt head pry off remaining head and cleat with a screwdriver. Remove remainder of bolt with vice-grips clamped on the protruding bolt. If you still cant get the leftover bolt out, most shoes allow you to replace the threaded plate in the shoe with new ones. Grease up new bolts...install cleats and ride.

Oh man... such a long day at work. Yesterday on my way home from work a taxi cab cut me off brutally on front street and became victim to me yelling and giving him the finger, so the driver got out of his car came toe to toe with me and threatened to punch me in the face. So I yelled a racial slur at him. "YOU WANNA GET CRAZY, MOHAMMED, LETS GET CRAZY!" I'm not proud of that fact, but I don't know how else I would have gotten under this jackasses skin, and he had been very close to severely injuring me and then threatened to injure me further... I'll stand by my guns.

Sorry to hear about the incident. Check out insultmonger.com for some good ethnic insults (the site may not be worksafe). I have a few favourites in Farsi and Cantonese. I had some fool edge his car into the College bike lane from a parking lot while looking right at me. He got a huge loogie on the hood, but I sometimes don't feel good about what is really needless roadrage on my part. Someone aggressively cutting me off, another story. Maybe I need to mellow out a bit.

Man, I am so glad the '90s are over :) I watched some of the competitions during the CMWC and I remember everyone riding naked along Queen West late at night. There were about 300 naked dudes taking up all the lanes; I was sitting on the Futures patio and nearly choked on my $1 mashed potatoes :) ;)

Yes.

But, speaking of my b0x0rs, I didn't realize there was so many pictures and I don't want to fill up MY flickr stream with YOUR photos, so instead I just used a photoshop automation to create this gallery on my server:

http://www.somnambulant.net/globalgutz/

distribute url freely. it's a colocated server I run with some friends that's hosted down in cal-ee-for-nigh-eh, so it can handle the feeble traffic we can throw at it. :P

so my day was going whell before i heard the honking coming from behing me and a cop in a court services van motions for me to pull over and without missing a beat asks me "so how many more red lights were you planning on running today!?" he wanted to ticket me for all three lights at $150 each but decided to be "nice" and give me a $30 ticket for not having a light on my bike. he says he's a cyclist and doesn't like the laws that affect my car insurance should i get a moving violation on a bicycle; i was still a smart boy and didn't give him my driver's liscence for fear of this. i'm still mad.
i got pulled over by a cube van!

seeing as i have no class tomorrow i could do some lunchables. name a time and place. wes - is that the espresso place next to the spice shop? i think it's called louie's, or something?

Ah ha ha!

The only way they can "affect your insurance" or take points off is if they fail to write "bicycle" in the vehicle type. Under the highway traffic act, only automobiles or street cars infractions can get points off.

If he ticketed you during the day, take the ticket to a JP and get it thrown out. Or go to court on it. The time will be on the ticket. There's no requirement to have a light during daytime, only half an hour after sunrise and half an hour before sunset.

Yeah but the annoyance is still there - to have to go to court etc. Also if anyone who's coming to lunch tomorrow has hook ups, I need some.

There were about 300 naked dudes taking up all the lanes; I was sitting on the Futures patio and nearly choked on my $1 mashed potatoes :) ;)
I was on that ride....what a blast. We came down Yonge St. from Bloor about 150 strong. It was funny cause the group kinda spread out and the people walking on Yonge were like "Holy crap theres a naked guy riding a bi..HOLY CRAP! Its a mob" The door men at Sanctuary let us in naked. Nothing like a bunch of naked messengers strolling around a goth bar.

^^^^^^^^ Now THAT sounds like a party. I remember at that weekend the guy riding the race naked..... damn it was a fun week-end. Keith it's occurred to me we may have met that week-end in passing.

Wes, man that's a solid for those pictures being hosted. I see what you mean by mid jpeg being more than sufficient for the weeb. Now I'll get the party ones going. I love digital, you can take a million shots and take only the best. With film that gets REALLY expensive if you're not a professional with your gear or connections. Practice practice practice the actions shots....I'm not pleased with my lack of good riding pics.

Jeremy ... what did you reply when he asked you that classic question? "All of them?"..

Pulled the trigger and got the Shimano triple strap MTN shoes 99 bucks at Velotique, no more 44's but at least one more pair of 45's. Ahhhh clipless again at last...and hooked up my cateye wireless....fun toy.

I vote uhh.. Global Bean? Whatever the place is called on the corner of Augusta/Baldwin. I like their espresso much more. :)

I know I suck, but I was reminded of prior commitments this morning, so I can't make it. Next time!

No worries!

And if your shoes are a wee bit too big, you might want to try going to MEC and testing out some insoles. I knew I wanted insoles for my last shoes and so I bought both at the same time. The best combo wound up being my size insoles with a size larger shoe.

so my day was going whell before i heard the honking coming from behing me and a cop in a court services van motions for me to pull over and without missing a beat asks me "so how many more red lights were you planning on running today!?" he wanted to ticket me for all three lights at $150 each but decided to be "nice" and give me a $30 ticket for not having a light on my bike.

Glad that he didn't slap you with the moving violation tickets-30 bucks isn't too bad. I just got a notification that I have to appear before some sort of court justice to defend my license. No more points left-and I don't even drive! Hope they don't suspend it.

Thanks for that .... I got the last 44's I meant that if someone else was lookin for some shoes.
Is it possible for me to FTP the other pictures to your server or would you have to do something to them via PShop. Which automated gallery is that? I use PS all the time but almost never the automated stuff except to do an action.

Just the fact you don't drive should make for an interesting court case. You got a lawyer?

Someone build a commuter w/ a front disc brake. For the love of [deity], fixed gear plus an Avid BB7 ...

*fingers crossed for one of those Angus frames*

I don't think it's really court, just have to go talk to some dude about my apparent dissrespect for the highway traffic act. I think they can force me to do some driver education/brainwashing if they feel the urge, or just suspend my license for a while. Should be amusing whatever the outcome. I'm going to have a hard time making myself seem remorseful...I would love to make these guys ride a few hundred rush hour km in my cycling shoes.

Way ahead of you!

edit: since turned brakeless and then retired. I still have that brake and fork kicking around for another project but I don't really ride with brakes anymore... Plus my brother was borrowing that wheelset to use on his crappy commuter and left it around unlocked and got the bike stolen ($10 bike, ~$200 wheelset)... that and the fork is oogly! That was an awesomely fun bike to ride around in the winter though....

Hey cavernmech,

I purchased a bunch of raffle tickets from the website via paypal. Will I be receiving the tickets in the mail? Who's in charge of the paypal raffle tickets?

Thanks.

Well, in order to add them to the current gallery I would have to run the photoshop script on them again. I just used one of the default photoshop cs ones at File -> Autmate -> Web Photo Gallery. I think it was called Horizontal Grey or something, but I'm not sure as I only have PS7 at work. If you want me to add more we can just use the same process. It only took me about 10 minutes to download them, run the script and then start uploading the directory to my server.
