how are the rollers? what about those other indoor training things I see on MECs site...which is better?

fluid trainer (http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442617366&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302882220&bmUID=1159985344559)

I wanna get a indoor trainer thingy when I actually have some cash-money.

I'm looking to pick up a Kurt Kinetic, they're a bit pricey but I figure I'm going to beat the crap out of it for the next five years and I don't want to replace it. No idea where to buy them locally, but I haven't really looked.

This is gonna be another "wait 'till the bike show and see what I can find" deal.

Exactly what I'm doing. I seem to remember seeing trainers there last year, but I didn't check out prices. Of course, I would think the Spring show would be a better time to get trainers since people actually want to buy them in the Fall.

I don't know Rosedale very well. Where's Gerry and Heathers? I have to rebuild my headset and bottom bracket so if get that done on Friday, I'll try to make it out.

And if you visit this thread often, you'll likely find out more than you want to know: like skin conditions and visions of steeker riding naked on rollers...

I suffer from a skin condition called FOLLICULITIS, it sucks that's why I have a permenent gottee and am unshaven at times, my X she got me to shave my tally wacker and I got FOLLICULITIS, down there which really SUCKS when riding a bike

New tires are great btw. I should have replaced them sooner. Skidding is way harder now, but easier in the rain for some reason.

I just put one of those cheap MEC continentals on the back, and it hooks up hard in the dry, but boy does it slide in the rain. I was fishtailing trying to stop this morning-kinda scary actually. I'm surprised there is such a difference from my old tire, which was pretty sticky in the wet.

:roflmao: With common names like hot tub folliculitis and barber's itch, folliculitis may sound more like a bad joke than a skin disorder. But folliculitis, an infection of the hair follicles, is no laughing matter. Severe cases may cause permanent hair loss and scarring, and even mild folliculitis can be uncomfortable and embarrassing.

Folliculitis usually appears as small, white-headed pimples around one or more hair follicles — the tiny pockets from which each hair grows. Most infections are superficial, and although they may itch, they're seldom painful. Superficial folliculitis often clears by itself in a few days, but deep or recurring folliculitis may need medical treatment.

My winter feet solution is a little involved but very effective. After getting weary of cold feet and on one occasion getting frostbite thanks to my neoprene overbooties, snow packing in through the SPD hole, forcing it's way all around the toes, then re-freexing solid ice when when back on the bike (if you walk through packed/deep snow in booties be sure it doesn't happen to you) So after that I decided enough was enough, if I gotta be out there all day my feet were going to be comfy! So this is what I came up with;

1 pair smartwool in appropriate thickness, with this arrangement those socks that claim to be safe at -40 are actually comfy at -40, not just painfully frostbite free. Smartwools have varying thicknesses like most wool socks, use lighter for -10 med for -25 etc
1 pair neoprene kayaking socks from MEC, large enough to go over thickest socks
1 pair Lake DH300 2 sizes too large

Feet stay warm all day. The socks are wet at the end of the day but while wearing you can't feel the diff between wet n dry w/wool beneath neoprene. I got the Lake shoes on ebay for some fraction of their actual cost. They've lasted 2 and a bit winters

Yes! Thank you, I am vindicated. I thought I was losing my ability last year because I slid so many times on these Town & Country tires.

37 Cluny Drive is one of the most ridiculous houses I've seen in the "downtown" of any major city. Its massive and gorgeous and they pissed off everyone is rosedale while building it. Though having a gazebo the size of my house would be pretty cool.

has anyone been there? any places I should check out?

gonna try and get my hands on a decent mountain bike while I'm there because apparently there's a lot of good singletrack stuff.

After all we are all Toronto cyclists. So much in common, so much to talk about.

In Mt. Pleasant cemetary are four of the six roundabouts that I know of in Toronto. Great for Keirin. But I have no idea what cemetary groundspeople are like to trespassers as I never went through a goth stage in high school. Beautiful, fun and varied place to ride though, and I'm sure we won't disturb the dead.

i'm not sure i (or anyone else here) needs to justify not "putting in the hard miles" or whatever. i've said it before and i'll say it again: i ride to school, to work, for groceries and i've done double centuries too; is one more noble than the other? I certainly don't think so. actually, the laid back attitude is one of the reasons i like hanging out / riding with the people here. if "just riding around chinatown for buns" isn't good enough for you then you're welcome on the doughnut ride any time. i, for one will not participate in any sort of "i ride more, i ride faster" pissing contest.
frankie says relax.

Well that was interesting ...

Anyway, so the gf dragged me out to look at an apartment today at College/Dovercourt. That's not exactly my neck of the woods ... anyone know if that area of town is decent to live in (just north of College on Dovercourt).

PS. Stupid effing duty fees on orders ... a man can't even get a damn frame these days without selling off a kidney.

It is a great area if you ask me (and you did); you've got the YMCA right there, a huge No-Frills right in Dufferin Mall (5 minute walk), lots of parks, streetcars on College or a short walk down to Dundas, Ossington station is about a 10 minute walk (there is an entrance to the subway on Delaware, one street east of Dovercourt), lots of small bakeries and grocery stores, really good brunch at Boom is about 5 minutes from you or Maggies, about 10 minutes and Roncesvalles is a 5 minute bike ride (best delis in the city as well as lots of bakeries) and High Park is about 10 minutes from you on a bike and the lakeshore about 15 minutes or so. You are about 15 minutes to the Eaton Centre (my marker for "downtonw") by bike and U of T is about 10 minutes. You'll be surprised how central you are, even though it seems like you are in the "west end".

I grew up in Parkdale/High Park and move out of the area now and then but always find my way back. Great 'hood for cycling too and if you get up into the Bloor West area there are a lot of older, richer Europeans riding around on Colnagos and Cervelos in High Park; they'll drop you like yesterdays news, believe me. Crazy.

I feel sort of bad after running over a pigeon that I think got sucked back into my chain/wheel this afternoon. I felt its little feathers going past my toes (a benefit of wearing sandals) and, when it was safe to look back I saw it flailing into oncoming traffic. Sucks to be a pigeon in China town. Probably too enamored with the street mung and didn't see me coming. I think the pedestrians were a little mortified by the whole thing.

Op, so who's this ewitz guy?

Hey look everyone, ewitz is back!

Like I said before you got banned last time, i'm literally dying to meet you.

I'm going to speak for the rest of us when I say that we have nothing in common with elitist roadies.

But aren't we all just cyclists when in comes down to it?

Some of us are just faster.

And we are not elitist, we accept all who show up on a real rig and can actually ride with some modicum of group handling skills.

Whats a "real rig" ? Downtube shifters need not apply?
You may not think you are an elitist, but you certainly come across that way. I also find it odd that a person who has been riding for over 20 years would call himself a JIT....just your attempt at humour I guess. For the record there are people in here that do race, but they don't put their internet names on the sign-in sheet. Since you seem to be such an awesome, fast cyclist, pehaps you could post some of your results from the O-cups this year? Good cyclists take advice from other cyclists. No-one was trying to say change the route....just making suggestions.

I'm going to Arizona for a week in November, I'm gonna be in Sedona and Flagstaff most of the time.

me == jealous. have fun! take lots of pictures!

Are you gonna dress up like them too? :)

Sake + Keirin = Mayhem...

I can if you want me too! :D Actually, no, I probably couldn't, I don't have a navy blue suit. :P

Are you kidding me? As if you don't know that's exactly where I live. :P Maybe if you managed to get your sorry ass out of bed to meet at my apartment like everyone else before the last velodrome trip you'd remember. ;) And to answer your question, I've lived there for 5 years or so, and when we moved recently our street number changed by 9 digits. So yeah, it's nice enough that we didn't want to leave!

edit: jet sanchez: do you really like Boom for breakfast that much? My gf and I really don't understand how or why there's a lineup out the door there every weekend. The only thing we can chalk it up to is a lack of choice for a "trendy brunch spot" along that strip. We both (as well as the people that came with us the 2-3 times we went) thought it was pretty tasteless and uninteresting. I went a few times because of the line (assuming line = popular = good food), I figured I must have just gotten them on a bad day or ordered the wrong thing. If you're strictly a breakfast place and you can't make a decent eggs benny, I'm not interested! Also, the fact that my gf described a waffle covered in fruit and chocolate sauce as "bland" doesn't bode well. :P

how are the rollers? what about those other indoor training things I see on MECs site...which is better?

fluid trainer (http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442617366&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302882220&bmUID=1159985344559)

I wanna get a indoor trainer thingy when I actually have some cash-money.
Rollers are a different style of workout than stationary trainers. Trainers usually have a resistance unit (Mag or Fluid) and don't require any real concentration to ride...just get on and pedal. If you are going to go the trainer route I would suggest the extra $ on a fluid is well worth it. they are quieter..and more mimic the "feel" of riding on the road. Rollers , at least until you get really comfortable on them, require more concentration to ride. The bonus is also that they help your bike handling skills as you have to keep the bike in a straight line else you come off them. Rollers dont offer the same kind of resistance as trainers ( unless you pick up a resistance unit for em) but all and all I think the rollers are a better form of training.
Perhaps the almighty JIT can enlighten us on this.

all who show up on a real rig

You mean that 6000$ spidery carbon/DA thingy in the garage at the end next to your BMW X5? The one you take out a few times a week? I'll pass .... I wouldn't want to to feel you to be uncomfortable, like you were slumming or something. I wouldn't want your friends to shun you for bringing non-Rosedale riders to your mutual aren't-we-just-the-**** love fest, I'll leave them to mock you for other reasons I don't care to know. Anyone is welcome on our rides, regardless of "rig". You want to involve others, don't immediately come off as an arrogant prick. Trust me, high school is over and you won't get beat up everyday anymore.

EDIT nice linkie eyefloater, I may pull that soon.
Keith, I'm really likin' the SS idea for my bike. Stuff is going on it, and I think it'll be cheaper all around if I just do the conversion.
What kind of crank will accommodate non-proprietary rings? Shim needs Shim rings no?
