I guess I should get my DIY fender materials ready. *watches the skies for snow*
are we gonna have any flippin' snow this year? Do I bother with my knobbies?

so... no one went to pho? PHO BICH NGA!!!! yeah, i'm going to chuck the faux-race blades and getting full fenders for winter. snow ain't dat bad.. it's the -30C before windchill that kills me.

I actually want some snow this year, I made fenders a couple years ago, total waste of time.

It snowed a few days ago, but the wind & hail was far more impressive.
I left my winter beater by the curb when I moved recently, a rusty urbanite that I was never particularly fond of. I bought it out of need. I'd just paid off a new Devinci, had it a month & it got ganked. Had to get something cheap & on credit at Urbane to keep working. It was a great ride with those qualifiers, inexpensive, solid & available on credit. Fabulous beater for 5-6 years and 3 solid work winters someone else has it now, it was only by the curb for an hour or so. If I hadn't let it rust solid after jacking up my knee again I'dve kept it, but I'm lazy, I gotta have real love for a bike to treat it right.
...I bet it doesn't miss me[/wistful]

I think that was a "gave it away" version of "left it by the curb", not a "stolen" version.
And no, nobody joined me for pho. It's alright though, I had William Gibson to keep me company.

this'll be the first time I ride thru snow w/out knobbies...

I usually use inverted tread tires for the winter. Works nice in snow and clear roads.

I only busted out the knobbies once last year. Usually, you don't really need them-it is way too soon now for sure. Slick tires are a good time.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think a bowl of pho is probably cheaper than a beer and a crack rock. :P
I think he's trying to say that he NEEDS to have his beer and crack rock.. anything more.. he cound not afford.

Yep, totally gave it away. It had wheels, cranks, rings, chain, freewheel, stem, bars, front brake & lever, seat the whole kitnkaboodle eveerything about it pitted or rusted stuck, still salted from its last winter at work.
I put a sign on it sed "Frame Works" :D

I've been thinking about this WINTER issue for a while.. I'm not sure what to do.
It seems that a sealed bearing fixie would be good. RIGHT?
I know that freewheeling on slush is not so fun.
I'm thinking some cyclecross tires, full brakes and fenders.

10-16-06, 02:31 PM
I ran 23c slicks all last year, but last year was also pretty mild and snow-free. If things get sketchy this year I might try some cyclocross tires. That was on my urbanite (also a rusty boat-anchor with at least one rusted-stuck area) with race-blade knockoffs (since the fork doesn't have fender eyelets).

i believe that would be the publicist for the book publishers. and to answer cav's question, if it's anything like the book launches i've been to, yes there is usually food and drinks too if you're lucky.

i'm thinking about throwing cyclocross tires on the purple bike and using up an old quando flip flop. perhaps a basket is in order... then again i rode the same bike all year last year and had no complaints.

actually, i was up there a couple weekends ago checking out the international beer festival in umeda. after lotsa beers and some expensive hash, i ended up taking the train in the wrong direction when i went back to my friend's place...finally realized after ~5 stops and turned around. are the osakans friends or family?

guys.. even the LCBO is encouraging us to do this single-malt tasting with this new "whisky generation" marketing. :P
ps. I went into the Scrivener Square (Yonge St in Rosedale.. I'll never forget that after Eyefloater and I had no farking clue during that alleycat last Spring) LCBO for the first time since it was renovated (and that was years ago) this past weekend. Wow.

It's at the ACC, and as long as your city bike has that SRAM group on it, you can leave it unlocked.

I'll take the snow over this crap ANY day. I'm going to have to buy new booties if I can't find mine, I can't keep soaking my feet. Not looking forward to the ride in. Just came back from the grocery store, it's yucky.

speaking of which.. my nylon MEC ones have started to leak on one foot. I'm going to see if they'll give me new ones. It looks like it's leaking along the seam. I'm not sure why they would put a seam right down the front anyway, doesn't seem like very smart design. Common sense, people!
ps. a friend's latest "Monkey Mondays" posting is topic-appropriate: http://www.monkeymondays.com/
pps. Cavernmech: I met a guy named Todd last night.. he was in the group I went to Maiden with (friend of a friend). He lives in Calgary now but used to live here around 6 years ago and was messing then. Your name/shop came up somehow and we realized we both know you. No idea what his last name is.

didn't she call jean charet (sp) the prime minister of canada? that can be our next ride; we'll have tea and scones at the King Edward, go shopping at yorkdale then whoop it up to wind beneath my wings. great idea.
Yeah i'll take a little snow before this. minus 20 would even be better.
on the topic of booties, i've tried using mine over top of regular sneakers in toe clips. i know it's unconventional but it seems to work.

All of us locking up in the front with the doorman, slowly getting ready to **** himself as he realizes where we are going.... I'm thinkin' I want ones that close more over the bottom, I've packed a fair bit of snow and slush into the sides of the ones that strap across the bottom, just a little more crap getting between my shoe and the booties.
