Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

i probably wouldn't wear any lycra, but carry a messenger bag and maybe someone in shiz's shark helmet. personally i'd throw the valet the key to my ulock, slip him a $10 and tell him to take care of it for me.

you made it sound like he chased monkies around and painted them.

on an unrelated note: has anyone seen this stuff (http://rapha.cc/index.php)in canada? i would love to get my hand on this jacket (http://rapha.cc/index.php?page=21)(and have someone else pay for it).

I'm totally ok with spending money on clothes and bike bits, but their stuff is just priced out of this world. There's no way I can justify it.
Grrr.. the combo of my lack of brown bag lunch and this weather is frustrating.

You two just perfectly described me coming in to work today (polyester probably didn't have a chance to get stinky yet though). Except add that I was soaking wet on top of that. I freak everyone in the office out on days like today.
Funnily enough last night I decided my camo cutoffs were in such rough shape that I needed to repair them. I got half way through sewing the various holes and tears back together before bed time last night, so I just said screw it and rode in on them today. I'll have to finish sewing on the massive butt patch later. its kind of flapping like a flag at the moment.
PS. JW, why isn't there a proper picture of that jacket on the site? how annoying

I have something close to these, which seem equivalent to both of the pairs you listed.

I got them from that place that is across the street (eastwards) from MEC in the big ugly white building. Coast Mountain sports? I dunno... They were the same price range.
I wouldn't call them waterproof... They aren't bad, but you will get wet if its raining enough, and especially if you wear shorts over them like me. Between the combination of not having mudflaps (my shins get soaked) and wearing shorts over (the wet cotton seems to force the water through the cycling pants), I'm still pretty soggy by the time I get to work. I haven't compared any other cycling pants, but you might as well try another brand as mine aren't anything to write home about. They are really nice and warm though, although that can be a problem in itself!

well, I've got a pair of vinyl rain pants like Wes would have used to wear on the cod trawling boats. They are 100% waterproof, as long as rain doesn't get in from the top or bottom, but they are 100% unbreathable and turn you into a moving sauna thats really way more gross and potentially-cold-causing than soggy cycling pants.

Well if yer not gonna ride it on the street then when you gonna ride it? A bike is a bike...no matter how sweet it is. Perhaps they should make you sign a waiver when you buy "track" bikes swearing you will ride it only on the track? :D Sorry dude but that smacks of snobbery. By that logic the only bike I own that I should ride on the street is my cruiser. :(

off-topic: anyone here ever been to Costa Rica?
Offhoff
10-17-06, 01:40 PM
Costa Rica = super easy to travel in but expensive compared to anywhere else in central america. Awesome surfing/trekking/nature stuff in general. Avoid Playa tamarindo and area unless you want to surf ollie's point and witch's rock both of which are righteously good. Salsa Brava is an amazing wave but seriously dangerous for novices (the break is right over a reef and next to/under a beer patio). No spanish really neccesary great services really built for a hassle free trip.
Personally I thought Nicaragua was a far better deal/trip/experience but some people have a thing about traveling in a country where there are guns everywhere. And Spanish is much more neccesary but everything is dirt cheap and tons more fun IMO.
All in all costa's cool but I'd rather spend 6 weeks in Nica for hte price of 3 in costa just my opinion.

How did I know you'd be the first (or possibly only) one to respond? :P I'm not concerned in any way by the cost of Costa Rica, it's more of a climate thing (political and geo). I don't think I've much interest in anywhere else in central america, but possibly somewhere in the Caribbean area. Mostly I'd just like to avoid as much of the tourist-trap-all-inclusive-walled-resort-with-children-running-around-screaming thing as I can and chillax on the beach for a week or so during the holidays. :)

I spent a month in Guatemala a few years back...had a great time. There is a town called Panahachel (sp?) that I spent more than 2 weeks at. Lots of beach...many other towns around the lake (Lake Atitlan) to visit if ya want and quite cheap. I would go back. Tikal was the bomb!

you can have as many bikes as you like as long as you are willing to ride them on the road, not to say you will leave a 10K TIG MIG locked to a post and ring, but you have to be willing to take it out.

Cozumel has great diving but for avoiding the all inclusive thing...well it IS the highest volume cruise ship port in the Carribean...plus after the earthquake I hear its not all it was especially the diving. You can definately avoid the resorts in Costa, tons of great great hostels if you go you must MUST go to monteverde and at say at the Pension Santa Elena (http://www.pensionsantaelena.com/). As a non-smoker you won't understand the majesty of spending a day smoking derby suave and drinking imperial on the patio. But you will atleast understand the beer part.
Random bike comment: We need a halloween alleycat that is all.

Its not so much that I don't think hot track bikes should touch the street, its just like, buddy, why are you commuting to work in your Lambo? I'd rather save the paintjob and chance of theft and just ride a more sensible bike around the city.
Because it's a beautiful work of art and costs about eleventy-million dollars. Plus, you know, the jealousy (which probably counts for more than anything else). :)
I don't quite feel this way, but I can tell you that when I went to that Scorchers to alleycats exhibit, I was floored by how beautiful and spotless the vintage bikes were. I know people on this forum see that a collector bought some crazy prototype cinelli where he says he won't ride it and everyone goes crazy calling him a snob and how they would ride the sh*t out of it. But then my kids wouldn't be able to look at it 50 years down the road and be like 'Damn'. Keeping something for posterity (not just for the fact of owning it), is a completely noble thing.
I know I'm sure as hell not taking my cyclops on coffee rides...
Does this argument happen with sneaker collectors?

Lovely place. Super people. Get outta the capital as soon as possible and you can't really go wrong. I particularly enjoyed Tamarindo and Puntarenas. The toursity stuff is fun too anyways. Who can say no to taking a zip line through the jungle canopy?
Is this a regular or a bike holiday? Also, learn to like rice, beans, beef and fruit!
