on the whole bike thing... i'd definitely ride the crap out of it. to not would be doing it an injustice, moreso if you paid a lot for it. if you can afford a lambo, you'd better be driving it to work and pissing everyone off!! a bike can always be restored and why deprive yourself the pleasure of tearing down the street with it. Also, I keep picturing Naomi Campbell's place in Jamaica from the footage I saw once on (*cough*) Cribs. :D Like little tiny cottagy type places right on this little lagoon with the foliage hanging down into the water. THAT is the type of vacation I'm looking for. Unfortunately the place I saw was likely on Ian Fleming's former estate (which makes it even more awesome), and the 1-bdrm goes for about $700usd/night. :P

So yeah, I'm not looking for adventure as much as sitting on my duff with a fruity tropical drink in my hand with lots of umbrellas in it, and floating around in the ocean. I'm certainly not against doing touristy things (zipline = awesome), but it's more a matter of being able to escape them whenever I want. Natural beauty, not the inside of an American-owned compound. :)

ps. It's mine and the lady's 10 year anniversary in January, hence the trip plans.

I never said I'd commute on the San Rensho but I'd definately ride it to kensington and sip coffee as the hipsters slipped on their own drool. I'd never lock it or do anything to hurt it but I'd ride the **** out of it everywhere I felt safe and I'd start getting a whole lot less worried about losing my trek. Plus I'd have an excuse to buy every piece of NJS that is neccesary to start the Toronto Keirin team, is there such thing as yellow-face? <ducks and runs>

Well lets put it this way. For every day use, I'd have to be ******** to take my fancy track bike over my khs. My cyclops just isn't practical, doesn't have racks or fenders, its pretty, and I can't throw it at angry motorists.

What if the dude with the dead sea scroll decided to ride the sh*t out of it. We'd never have found it! Same thing with the lost NJS bike. This is just personal opinion, but I'd rather that people left their incredibly fancy bikes in the closet so that when they die their kids will donate them museums or at least sell them on craigslist for 50 bucks. After all, its no skin off my back

Our HR girl's boyfriend is the mechanic at that place. He gave me a full tour. They have a lambo SUV that was apparently part of an order by the Kuwaiti army or something, but it fell through and now they are just collector's pieces. Its kinda scary looking.

off-topic: anyone here ever been to Costa Rica?

I worked in Playas del Coco, Costa Rica, for three summers, and those James Bond type beaches are hidden around there. Some locals took me, on bikes no less, to some of them. The whole palm tree jutting out over the shore of a secluded inlet can be found, and nothing else, no people, buildings, or trash. We stayed in a small hotel, no resorts for miles. It was a small seaside town with a number of bars and restaurants. Prices were fare. It was a good spot to be stationed. Cloud forest, volcano, diving, rafting, were all a short trip away. I can give you some addresses if your interested.

As for the trophy bike thing, I'm glad there are collectors, restorers, but I love the feeling of spotting a beautiful bike on the streets and doing the 180 head turn, that seems to stay with me for the rest of the day.

I can appreciate a trophy bike vs. say a collectors' piece like those prototypes. There is a distinction.

Was gettin' a burger. On the way I pass 300C HEMI parked in the bike lane sth Queen's Quay, dude's on the phone. I'm waiting for my order and dude comes in. His car goes off. Runs out beep beep, comes back in. 30 sec later it goes off. he does this at least 4 times. On my way out I see the biker that has been looping the Weston hotel, kicking buddies' car everytime he passes, until the guy gets in his car an leaves. What a hoot.

That made me laugh. Tennis balls work well for that too.

traffic jammer: good story. :D I had to beat on a f'ing SCHOOL BUS this morning that has cut me off at least a half dozen times while driving down Harbord in the bike lane AND landed a nice loogie on the window of another car parked in the bike lane just as they turned to look at me. Once again I ask: why is it that inclement weather brings out the worst in drivers? They're seriously WAY worse on wet/snowy days than "safe" ones.

if you want to go a little further south i'd recomend argentina any day (as you may know). perhaps not as dirt cheap as some other spots in south america but nicely civilized, not americanized, no real annoying tourist culutre to speak of and nice and hot in january.

could be the lessened visibility or the distraction of the rain. i don't know.

RE: clockwork orange - i think that publisher designed all of their "modern classics" book covers in the minimalist-relates-to-the-theme-of-the-novel way. i still have never read that would you believe it. i'll have to see if i have a copy around here.

Yeah, he is very close by, in Burlington. The bikes look similar and appears to be of the same size but yeah, hard to know for sure as I am sure many of these things were sold. Bummer.
