Rides and Races - Toronto Fixed

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Um, i beg to differ. if you can make it to the top of bluffers park on your fixie without getting off and walking, the beer is on me.
That's my kind of challenge. :)
I don't think I've ridden that area, but I'll check it out this weekend if it is nice again. I don't know of any paved hills in Toronto that I can't inchworm up on my fixie, but I'd be happy to find one.

I too would enjoy your beer, but I'm west and it's too far to ride for a free beer! There is another steep one in that neighbourhood, Fallingbrook Dr, not to be confused with Fallingbrook Wds, Fallingbrook Cres or Fallingbrook Rd. It's not a long one but it feels a bit steeper. At the end of Queen St is where they are.
I can go up any toronto hill I've encountered including the ones out there, but when I was fixed I only rode 48x16 which might be why, more gear inches and I might not be able to, hell I know I couldn't.

i'm familiar with the fallingbrooks. bluffers park is, i'd say 3x longer and just as steep.
FWIW, live in parkdale and a ride along the martin goodman from my place out to the beaches and then along kingston rd. to bluffers park is about 50km or so.
if i can find a bottle or can to fit in my bottle holder i'd wait at the top with beer.

that must be one BIG mf.
anyways, Ruby Dhalla is gonna come out from nowhere riding her KHS aero track and she'll leave to eat her dust on the hill climb. and when she does get up to the top, she's gonna guzzle all your beer and ride off laughing like a maniac while your still huffing and puffing your way up the hill.

A few things........it is nowhere near 50km to Bluffers Park from Parkdale......maybe round trip after a few laps of the hill.
Two.....the hill itself is give or take 1 km long, the steepest part being at the bottom where the grade is probably 15+%......if you can make it past that the rest shouldn't be any big deal.
Three.....I would say making it DOWN Brimley on a fixy would be the hardest part.....70km/h down that hill aint no thang.
Four....the beaches pretty much rules for hills. So when you come here to suffer make sure you visit me at work (Cycle Solutions) and I will show you some good ones!

If I build a wheel for 130 spacing, how easy is it for me to later on run it in a frame with narrower spacing?

It depends on the hub you are using, but most of the time it will be as simple as removing a couple of spacers from the axle. In some cases, you may have to swap in different sized spacers to achieve the desired width. Not at all difficult, you just some cone wrenches.
sr20det
01-25-06, 01:45 PM
true that.
its usually just a matter of spacers.

yeah, i meant 50km round trip from the north end of parkdale to to bluffers park and back. assuming you do a bit of a loop and not a straigt out and back. yes the spin down brimley is intense. i'd say harder on my hand as i only have one brake.
yeah a 15% grade isn't an exaggeration; your right that's the worst part, it does flatten out a bit then kick up at the end which i always found a bit tough on the ego.
on another note, there are other real hills around if you feel like leaving the city a little. bell school line (north west of mississagua) is notorious for being a "walker" as is pumpkin hill (past the holland marsh west of 400).

word! parkdale was my old stomping grounds for many years...used to live at king/dowling with a nice view over the lake (next door to the owner of easy), and was staying at queen/sorauren over the holidays.
for anyone eastside, you should really make an effort to check out "GRACE'S" on the southwest corner of eastern/carlaw for the old skool food scene and hanging out with the 'regulars'. i think almost everything is under $3, like grilled cheese/fried egg/etc. sandwiches for around $2. the woman who owns it is so kind and awesome, too! go there. now!

Green Room!!! But not when you'd think! They've got a 3$ breakfast there that's just awsome!!! 3$ for two eggs, fries, toast, bacon, and a salad! Definitely the finest breakfast place in my opinion. Watch out though, during the summer white russians turned me and a couple friends 20$ breakfast into a 180$ breakfast/all day drunkfest... so you've been warned :D

Saigon Palace..... Spadina just below College. mmm good Vietnamese.
Gio Rana's Really Really Good Restaurant. NW corner of Queen/Leslie.
Famous restauranteur .."the nose" from Amex commercials. the nose has been added to the nameless signage of this old bank of Montreal branch. Laid back ....damned good food, good prices(though not dirt cheap), plates are made for ordering lots of things and sharing around the table. Awesome good times had there with a few friends. Not the place for a friday night messenger piss up though.
DAmn not reading properly..... pubs..opps sorry guys.

Yeah, I think it'd be hard to find someone who doesn't have the green room on the list... I just recently discovered the breakfast though and now it's a whole new green room for me :-). I'm living in ottawa for school right now so I'm gonna have to start taking notes too. I've pretty much just stayed in the annex during my brief trips back home, so I'll leave the "hip" hangouts to those still living there :-)

hey guys!!
I swear I am going to hang around here more regularly! How are things going? I haven't popped in here since New Years day. I switched to working afternoons at my "DAY" job 6pm-2am and getting used to the schedule has kinda wiped me out for a few weeks.
But I am really hungry and want pork buns..LOTS of pork buns..so if anyone is going on early afternoon bun runs I'm in :)
