I'm pretty sure that beverly south of college is still terrible though, and the pattern they cobbled st george with is annoying as you're constantly transitioning between brick and concrete. In a few years its going to be REALLY BAD. I can guaruntee it.

Yeah.. beverly south of college is brutal still. So is dufferin from college to queen. I think those brick sections were supposed to be for traffic calming and to encourage jay-walking, but I don't think enough drivers actually recognize them as such so it winds up creating more dangerous situations than if it was just a regular street since the peds expect cars to stop.

I have been doing the 15 min ice thing it does seem to help. It might be time to go to someone who really knows knees specifically. I want to know what to do excercise wise to maximize recovery. I have had other muscle injuries in other places before but the knee is a real *****.

Yeah, the ice + advil is going to lessen the SYMPTOMS but it's not doing anything to actually fix you up in the long run. The only things that are going to help that are likely rest and physio. Stretching is GOOD. I'm planning on starting a daily stretching routine (yoga-esque) once I'm back from my vacation. I actually found a great quad stretch last night while looking up information on my own kneecap tracking problem. I have it bookmarked at home.. Just PM me later if you're interested.

I think the city stopped doing most of the work and are hiring contractors instead. The problem is, nobody is checking their work- and they're doing a craptastic job. Ridden North on Beverly/St George lately? The "bike lane" is pretty much unrideable unless you're on a mountain bike. :(

Totally off-topic.
A question for the Apple/I-Pod experts out there.
I am getting an I-Pod from Santa. He is out shopping for one as I speak. I have been informed that the 8g Nano and the 30g Video I-pod are the same $. Now I had not planned on having much video in it, just for tunes. Other than the obviously larger storage capacity is there a good reason to opt for one over the other? I know battery drain is more of an issue with the vid one...but 30g over 8g sounds enticing. Thoughts.

The nano has no moving parts - it's all flash memory (no skipping/more durable) whereas the Ipod video uses an internal harddrive. Rumour has it that the video ipod is about to be deprecated in 2007 with the release of another generation of ipod video.

The nano is obviously also smaller than the ipod video. That's all I can think of. If you're going to be taking it on rides, i'd get the nano.
Calling somnambulant...

Edit: If they are the same price the video ipod is tempting

nano's will survive longer and have better battery life. They will not show video or hold a ridiculous amount of music. If you need something just for music get the nano, if you want something as a portable harddrive/video/music device get the iPod video. My 2 cents

The 30g'r could end up being the sum total of your collection. Also good for passing files back and forth as well. The Nano is mor edurable due to no moving parts, and I've even heard of one being washed in a pocket and coming back to life after an extended drying period.

Still as a portable, 8 Giggos is more than sufficient IMHO. We'll hook some speakers up to a generator at the 24hrs and it'l be a jukebox.

So I can still use the Nano for moving files and fotos back and forth between my 2 computers? If that is the case I think I will go Nano. No moving parts sounds good for my rather clumsy self.
Oh yeah...the current video one will be out-dated next year? A new generation means that there is some prob with the current model?

I like the size of the Nano. The new shuffle is so small I'd lose it in a heartbeat... Ipod movies are the new baseball cards. *winks* Keith ...the new Nano...will require..NAY demand iTunes7...you have been warned.

No it generally means they bought up all the old x Giggo micro HDs are are now upto the bigger size.
Note how the Ipod HD sizes are one production cycle behind the laptops.....
Laptops move upto 120G standard...Ipod now 80G....
Brilliant buying off old stock from some other manufacturer to fill al hole in your device.
I think the cost of an iPod is about that of an OK steak dinner

I primarily will be using it as a music device..both on the bike and at home/work (seems like the same thing sometimes). A solid state type thing would be more durable I know. How fragile are the Vid drives? I mean it is a portable device.

Actually you buy a new unit, iTunage V7 will be the rule, so come to think of it you are gonna have to. My daughter's Red Nano she got isn't even recognized by previous versions..... the sys req say it needs 256meggos to run...double the previous version. Don;t let that scare you off.... I'm sure Duppy has a piece of SW as a work around if your machine hates Itunes7.

Ruth's Chris? Dang ...never eaten in crazy high food place.

I have the 30gb ipod video (last years model.. but the only changes have been good ones.. a couple extra features in the software and I think slightly better battery life). I'm a clumsy bastard. I don't think durability enters the equation, personally. At the end of the day for the same price you're either getting 8gb in a tiny package or 30gb is a small package. I don't see the difficulty in choosing personally. I guess it also depends on your listening habits though.. if you tend to just listen to certain albums a lot, maybe the nano would be fine. I'm constantly jumping all around my entire library however, and I only keep full albums. So therefore the 30gb was no contest. Battery life has never been a problem for me. I plug it in every night when I get home.. If I forget, it lasts me through the next day (with my listening habits anyway). I've never really used it for video either, but having that option certainly isn't a negative.

Also, Apple releases a new updated ipod every 6 months or so. If you're afraid of the latest and greatest coming out and making yours "obsolete" then you'll never get anything. Why buy 2007 campy parts.. 2008 is going to be "Better"! I still have a 1st gen 5gb ipod here that works just fine (all that bad press about crappy ipod batteries be damned.. it keeps going and going...). The only reason *I* upgraded was for the extra capacity. And you know what? iTunes 7 works just fine with it, and iTunes 8, 9, and 10 probably will too, because Apple are Good People. :)

So yeah, the only benefit I can see from the nano is umm.. maybe the slightly better battery life? The video is portable enough for a jersey pocket, durable enough for me to repeatedly drop it on a low-pile carpet over concrete floor at work and have it keep rocking, enough battery life to last a couple days of regular listening in a pinch, and 3.75x more capacity.

</end apple shill>

hey keith.

i like the nano. so small i take it with me everywhere. way more than i did with my old ipod (the size of the video) the low weight is incredible. it's like having a pack of of gum on you. so you don't even notice a hotspot on your body when your biking/running/threatening shoplifters with baseball bats :)

unless you download lots of movies, I'd skip the video. plus 8g of music is alot.

30g vs 8g = the winner is a sexy black 30g video i have one & i just keep adding music to it. the video part is neat dont use it that much but have the aristocrats on there. i dont have to reach into my wallet to show pics of my boys. I love mine. nanos are cute for girls... 30g videos with big HD for big boys & the first thing i thought when i was going to buy a new one was i should wait till a new one comes out not a good idea & i-tunes no problem yet. also stepped over to the dark side and bought an imac. so i'm the mac daddy. well my wife is. she gets the imac. i get the pc.

...and what Wes says.

I got my kona smoke today. Its nice to be able to ignore curbs and stuff. I need to get a proper crankset for it because the triple cranks on it suck for singlespeed and keep jumping. V-brakes seem to have a kind of on-off modulation; it would be really easy to endo on this bike if I squeezed the levers a little too hard!

Woo! We match now. You are so ready for the Leslie Spit snow ride.

We had a nice ride tonight, the Curbside Gang. We even boarded a ship down at the harbor before the cops came. Big fun.

New v-brakes and pads make for instant stopping. What is the problem with the crank? The chain is jumping off? If thats the case probably a crooked chainline and ramped chainring. Hit the wrong spot and off goes the chain even with a singlator. Any pics yet?

No pics yet. Maybe after the weekend. The cog is mounted outboard a bit so that it lines up with the big outside chainring. It seems to work alright but its way too high a gear. When I put the chain on the middle ring the chainline+ ramped chainrings are enough that the chain skips a tooth every now and then.

</end apple shill>

edit: definitely my longest bikeforums post evar. I'm such a ****ing nerd. Keith, I'm likely going to come by tomorrow so if you have any questions for me feel free to fire away.
Thanks for the advice guys. Nice to get the scoop from neutral parties (except you Wes..we all know you are "Apple for Life" ;) ) A friend of mine informs me he has a hookup for a wholesale deal on I-Pods. I am going to get the 30gig vid (the prospect of having most of my music library in it is too tempting to pass up)and if I save enuf $ wholesale perhaps a Shuffle to complement it. Thanks again.K.

I totally read this page faster than I have ever read a bf page. I noticed the phrases "buy 2007 campy parts" and "shoplifters with baseball bats", but thats about all I drew from it.

hahah.. actually, I'm not that big of a mac nerd and it's more of a recent thing. I'll admit I actually like a lot of things about pc's and even some microsoft products (gasp). But when something works well, I recommend it. I'm good with the word of mouth advertising..

Speaking of which, that guy I sent you way for the Campy derailleur a while back dropped by my office this week to thank me for the referral and rave about how happy he was about it. :)

Get into work this morning, sit down, boot up the computer, open email and web. Read email from nintendo saying that they are recalling all 3.2m Wii controller straps. Wonder what the world is coming too when people get so into Wii bowling they are smashing their tvs...

haha I find this entry funny. Parts I particularly like:

"It is 3 years old but is practiacally new.
Has been housed outside so has some minor rust"

"It is a Man's bicycle but sized for a woman or a child."

"Please reply to this posting!"

Its a bicycle of paradoxes!

Try moving the cog in a bit further, I have a bunch of spacers of various sizes lying around you can have if you want.

If anyone is interested, I am going to sell one of my mtb s/s wheels. Have a sun rim with an lx hub 14t non ramped cog, and a mavic rim, sealed axiom s/s hub with a 15t iro cog threaded on. Prices are good, esp for BF memmbers.

"It has two wheels, front and back. That's one wheel on the back, and one on the front, but both wheels are on the front"

"My son used this bike when he was a kid, but now that he's outgrown it, he has passed it down to me"

"It's a sort of Elton John meets White Snake"

"Strong enough for a man, but made for a woman"

Korea town is sooooooo nice now, Bloor just became my favourite route to work again. Up until Beverly or so, then I turn off. It is really tight up there with all that ROM construction; I can't figure out if I like the new addition or hate it.
