i would say that so long as the wheels are hand built by a mechanic who has a good reputation and lots of practice, you'll be pleased. try to avoid machine built wheels. i've never had problems with wheels from urbane...

I haven't seen him there in awhile but it is the winter so maybe their hours are a bit less, I dunno. I had my fixed wheel-set built at Urbane and I don't know who worked on it but it is fine so far. I am a bit worried though as I am running on 28-holes and sometimes the back feels a bit squishy. I asked the guys at Urbane if I should be extra cautious but they said it would be fine since I have deep-Vs, but I think I should have gotten double-butted spokes, maybe even triple-butted as I am 6'1 and about 190lbs. What do you guys think? Am I playing with fire?

FWIW i'm still riding a 28h wheelset i got at urbane in 2002 that has never needed truing. 105 hub on a older deep-walled mavic rim (cxp14 i think). so no, don't sweat it, i'd say it'd be fine, especially since it's handbuilt by experts, all the spokes will have even tension, etc. is it dishless? as for double butted spokes that will only make it margianally lighter. if you're using straight-gauged spokes, those will be the stongest. i'm about the same build as you and i'd be comfortable riding it. if you're weary about it, you can always give the wheel to me!

a dishless wheel will have spokes of the same length used on both sides of the hub. front wheels are dishless for example. i was refering to a hub that has threading for a cog on either side. a symetrical wheel... sounds like you have a set of quality wheels there.

I was just taking a look at Google Maps in an attempt to start planning some training rides for this summer. After a few minutes I realized that riding to Guelph and back probably isn't the most fun I could have on a bike.

Anyone have any good routes for long distance rides? I'm looking to scale up from like 50km to 150km over the course of the spring / summer. It'll also be good to have some distance options available depending on my schedule and whether or not the gf is joining me (I asked her about doing a 6hr ride and she growled at me, so I'm guessing I'll be riding those ones solo).

PS. No, I don't want to go on the Donut ride. Those people have gears, which frightens and intimidates me.

once you get past 16th, it feels SOO nice cause everything is just farm land.
It doesn't even feel like I live in a city anymore.
+ you can actually tell that the air is nicer, crisper, cleaner.

btw, is there anyway to fix a stripped thread?
I found some sugino 75's but the *edit* crudders, I meant left crank arm was stripped, where you would normally thread on your pedals, (what is that part called?) One of the main mech's said that they could try to do a helix... something. I forget what the term was. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone of you guys would know what to do :)
oh and I found it with a suntour superbe chainring which is also NJS stamped HUZZAH! But its pretty much worn out, oh well.

obviously you don't want to start with the 1000km rides. i'm a member of the randonneurs and have done some of these rides fixed and there are a few in the club who do a great deal of those rides on fixies so it is doable. all the routes are well detailed so you won't get lost! my all time favourite is the "Simcoe Century" which basically starts in maple and meanders north to jackson's point on lake simcoe and heads south again through the holland marsh. i'll ride it again any time; let me know if you're interested.

hey, my fork (Urbane chromey one) keeps getting a thin layer of surface rust on it. It pretty well just wipes right off, but it's still ugly.. Think a thin layer of grease would help things?

my chrome columbus fork has a wee bit o' surface rust on it as well and nowhere near as gleaming as operator's :( ..you might have to keep re-applying the grease and wouldn't it attract dust and dirt? is it really humid where you're keeping the bike?

Jack Layton used to bike up and down Spadina back in the day and we used to chat now and then. This was when Spadina was 7 lanes one day, 6 the next and then 9 the next.....full of pot holes, delivery trucks, TTC buses, pedestrians and it was dangerous as hell. He is a pretty big reason we now have bike lanes in Toronto. He isn't really on the same page as me, politically, but yeah, he talks the talk and walks the walk.
