It sucks that people are afraid to ride in the city. People come into the store all the time complaining about how dangerous it is. I try to tell people that it's not that bad, but the truth is, sometimes it doesn't matter what you do, someone else might do it to you. Though, most of the people I would say, are more worried about "thin tires" and getting them stuck in street car tracks.

When people are looking for a MTB for commuting to work, because it's "Safe" with it's big knobby tires, I often pull out my Surly and say "I don't have any problem with my bike. one break, one gear, narrow tires".

I've yet to decide if that's a good sales technique or not.

P.S. Just realized I was post #18000 back there. Wheee!

Let's get a van going down to Monstertrack 8.

It's always a very straightforward, and well organized alleycat.

it'll be mega.

for real. i'm constantly thinking about what could be done in toronto to make drivers realise that. my most endearing thoughts so far are: a) something like the chick uses in "snow crash" to stick a warning flag on a vehicle or b) a "wall of shame" of plate #s...

Nice.. another nerdy scifi book reference. :) I've been thinking about making a "wall of shame" sort of website for a couple of years actually. I think someone has started one, but my ideas are better. :P

Love the "ready for a core sample" bar ends too. *shudder* Are they proud of the fact that there's shiny metal visible from the ends of their grip? What else would warrant a solo closeup picture?

neat, i'd never heard of bikechain. just looked it up. not that i'm a student (and i/we've got tools and stuff at home) but i'd be more than happy to spread the word.

sirrobinofcoxly: i had just the opposite happen when i bought my bike - i fell in love with it immediately and the clerk was all like "oh you don't want that, the happiest day of my life was when i got rid of my drops, etc etc"... i think i might have even looked in your shop and had someone show me a frame saying "this is very popular, everyone is riding it" and therefore *totally* killed the sale! in terms of MTBs, the key word is mountain, of which toronto has none. sure, suspension may help going over potholes, but it's a waste of energy. some of the reasons that i like SS are that i can go fast and still pick it up to go up and down stairs if need be. and if I can do it...

glad someone picked up on that... i noticed someone saying skitching (or however it's spelled) recently :D

i thought someone had started a wall of shame as well... you should try it out though! i think it's a great idea, but i don't have the tech skillz.

I was riding behind a guy on a mountain bike with disc brakes/suspension, etc this morning on Harbord. I mention this because there's this little hump in the bike lane heading East across from Bickford Park. It's slightly annoying, but whatever. Anyway, I'm about 50' behind this guy and I see him steer out of the bike lane to avoid this little bump. I hit it every day on my fixie with 115psi 23's and it barely rattles my fenders. What a wuss. :P

That's my story. :)

There may not be mountains here but we have a ton of good trails to put a mountain bike to good use. I love my full sus bike....just not on the road. Mountain bikes on the street FTL.

If the mass IRO buy happens with individual shipping at the price they claim I'll probably be in. The chances of me being involved rise exponentially if the paint scheme is unique and gawdy.

Now I know why people keep buying "disposable" bikes.

Me: Your front wheel is damaged beyond ALL repair
Guy: Yeah, how much is that to fix?
Me: Fix? Uh cheaper just to get a new front wheel ~ $40.

Guy: What does the fork have to do with my flat?
Me: It means that if I fix the flat, you are still going to ride away on a death-trap
Guy: Man, I'm late for work, I just need the flat done
Me: Sorry my hands are tied.
Guy: I'm not going to sue. Can't I sign something?
Me: Store policy. I can sell you a tube, and take the wheel off for you
Guy: I don't know how to do a flat

Y'know whats really cool? They are planning to do it on the Islands. Beach...no cars...very few cops....SWEET!

That ferry ride is going to be very very safe.

Damn, that is cool. Are you going to need volunteers to help out?

edit: damn, I thought it was 2007 too. If I am in Toronto in 2008, I can help out ;)

I can't wait for CMWC I just hope that they manage to get the figure 8 track o'doom out so I can try not to die on that thing

was the last one at cine studios on queens quay? if so, i was there (not to compete, just tagged along w critical mass) and then proceeded to get my nice raleigh cruiser stolen outside of the elmo 'cuz i was so ga-ga after some boy i forgot to lock it up... d'oh!

hope to actually meet some of you tomorrow, but my knee has been really bothering me this week, so i dunno... i think someone mentioned it'd be ~30 km, right?
