The ballet of getting the bike into the tub, would be a bad thing. Then I'd have to mop half the house afterwards. I'll drip dry n the front of the house....I should get a collection mat for the water.

That's what I did last night.. I just used this big old bath towel that's been relegated to "biggest rag in the world" use and put it underneath (after shaking/scraping as much slush off as possible outside). I don't worry to much about cleaning stuff. Once a week I just give it a "dry cleaning" with a dry (or perhaps damp) rag while I'm cleaning/lubing my chain. That's what beaters/commuters are for, right?

I have brushed the excess snow off and out of the treads with a brush outside in the past. I suppose a new brush needs to find it's way outside now that we have snow. Thanks Offhoff.....nice vid.... I loved the under the deck shot..... what's the durometer of those kyrpto wheels 80-85 for polished crete?

I just realized that I desperately want a cycling-specific add-on for theweathernetwork.ca: daily tire recommendation. Slicks/knobbies/studded? What's a man to do ...

Duros are all over the place, some people run softer because it takes cracks easier. Sliders use really hard wheels so that they slide easily. For the parking garage racing league it depends if thats weeks race rules state you can pump or not. Pumping boards generally softer wheels then boards you just tuck on. Its like biking, there are good technical reasons to run certain things and certain times but other times its just run what your comfortable on.

http://www.theweathernetwork.com/features/schoolday/pages/CAON0696.htm?CAON0696 Do you really think sidewalks and roads are going to be "dry" tomorrow? That's not how they were today.. They were either wet and slushy or covered with snow!! And I don't see why that'll change overnight!!! LIARS!!! :D :D :D

Danhalen I do want to come I"m just pointing out that doing track 1 and 2 at the same time would mean you'd be caught up to what other people have done. I'm glad to hear that the snow ride was fun, I went out for a mini ride to get to a friend's house last night on my s/s mtb and it was great fun slipping and sliding around. 27th is fine for me if thats the day to head off to the track.
Ahhh I see good point. That would be great, although it seems Tovi may have heard otherwise. I don't blame you for not wanting to only do track 1 again.

Yea but you rode all day right? So, no wonder you didn;t come out for the snow, as you'd been in it all day. Back in my day I'd have in the bottom of a beer pitcher after a day like yesterday. Knees hurting from crankin all day?
Yes indeed. I hear ya on the pitcher. For me it was just pass out really early. Clearly I know how to party. Yeah my knee has been kind of messed up since early December. I took a month off because of it actually. I am back part time, but it isn't going quite as well as anticipated. I think I need another part time job, maybe even full time as I may end up having to take more time off. I don't want to be living with this knee bull**** for the rest of my life. *sigh* all I want to do is ride pain free.

So I called up Forest City Velodrome and they said they no longer do Track 1 and Track 2 in the same session, even if we're coming from out of town. He gave me reasons why they don't do it anymore, but I'l spare you. But they have them.
Anyways, I was told to get in touch with Daryl (dwawenger@yahoo.ca), who books and teaches Track 1. I was told that Saturday's are pretty "mental", and the earliest date we could book was Feb. 3rd. As for Teusday nights, those are (obviously) much more open. We could even come out tonight if we wanted to.
So, there's some food for thought for the forum. Let's get this ball (or wheel) rolling...
Nice work Tovi. Febuary 3rd looks to be okay for me as well. As of now tuesday night wouldn't be too good, as I would be just finished a day of messengering and be very exhausted, not to mention I would have to get up the next morning to do it again.
P.S. The stupid forum is still asking me to sign in everytime I post its so friggen annoying. I have to click refresh like 10 times to get it to recognize that I am in fact signed in, then it will display my post.

the idea of washing a bike in these frigid temps scares me!
i've heard of frames totally cracking as a result of water freezing... hope you're drying everything well and everything is sealed tight
There's likely still enough residual salt on the bike to keep any residual water liquid when I go outside. :D

I lock my bikes up in the lobby of my building (only 1 tenant other than myself) and put papers underneath to catch melting crap. Leave a broom by the door to get most snow/crap off before you come inside and there won't be too much mess.
If there is a sunny day, I sometimes hit one of those DIY car washes. You just pay 2 bucks and get the high pressure hose to get out the mess. I myself only worry about salt corroding the steel but yeah, I bet a frame could crack if there was a sudden drop in the temperature.

Garden hose and what not should be ok, but I would stay away from pressure washers around any sealed bearing units.

Went for a ride to grab a 14T cog.
Urbane doesn't have any so I got a 15T. :(
I don't remember it being so slippery last year.
The jacket and layers underneath just make it so annoying to ride.
I'm thinking a 28c cycle-cross tire would have a much better time in the muck
26 x 1.95 @ 65 PSI just doesn't feel right.

oh yea don;t get me wrong there is nothing delicate about a power wash but man o man does it get winter crap off. Take home.. dry .. and then clean it. It'll peel decals. water in the cabling can cause havoc if it's really really cold on the way home from the wash, so don't do it when sub sub zero.

i was under the impression that it was always a good idea not to aim the hose anywhere where there's grease, even if you're just cleaning your bike at home.
here's an unrelated question: can grease get less viscous when it's cold? i have my bike locked up all day at school and the last few days when i got to ride it home the headset / fork is sticky and it's really hard to turn from side to side (it's a cane creek sealed aheadset). any wisdom keith?
More viscous, and definitely when it's cold!

what did you do to it to cause the pain?
Well, my knees have never been perfect, as I tend to roll my knees in when I walk/run due to collapsing arches. I have orthotics in my shoes to correct that. They don't do anything when I'm cycling though. I think what really caused the pain though was when i partially dislocated my knee cap on a table at home. I worked on that knee for about a week and a half after that thinking it was just bruised. I think that's what really got it irritated/made it painful. It got sore one day and reached a point where I just could barely move it. That was when I took the time off. The fact that my knee still tracks weird just keeps aggravating it I guess. I went to a sports therapist who gave me stretches and exercises to help correct the wacky tracking of my knee but I guess it will take time to take effect. So I guess there wasn't one thing in particular that caused it, but whacking my knee really hard on that table is what really set things off.

Crutches and cane oh wow you really did a number on yourself. Did you go back to messing after recovering from that injury? How long it was until you made a full recovery?
Yeah I think I have to admit to myself that I need to take more time off. It has defintely improved but still has a way to go. I can ride for quite a while before it bothers me at all. I think once the muscles around it start to get tired/tight that's when I get into problems. At least if I ride on my own time I can stop if I have to. At work it's just go go go no matter what.

I was fortunate in that I did it skateboarding at 35, I have been retired from messing for a number of years, thank goodness as I can't imagine having to ride for my rent if I had been still messin'. I was off for a good six months, but I ripped bones and required arthroscopic to remove the fragments. The soft tissue were a mess. Stretching and a warm up of the knee will help with the riding, smooth and steady spinnin will keep all warm, lubricated and happy. TRY to stop racing lights for a while as explosive bursts will make your kneecap feel like it wants to shoot across the room.

Well I went to MEC yesterday evening and told them my story about forgetting the coffee grinder and getting a too-small rack. They told me to grab another grinder and a different rack and call it even. Sweet. I remembered to bring the grinder home this time, and when I was installing the rack I noticed that it is missing a crucial weld and is hence useless. So now I have to go back to MEC to exchange it again. Third time is the charm!
Speaking of angry out of place bike people: When I was doing the United Way CN Tower climb in the fall we were all lined up for like 2 hours in the skywalk thingy. While we were waiting I noticed an angry looking guy waiting there on his own. By his expensive haircut, glasses and manicure you could tell he was a dyed in the wool suit. But he was standing around in full skin tight mapei team kit with some Asics runners on his feet. Everyone was standing around for 2 hours so we all had plenty of time to admire this guy's colourful physique and attitude.
