If I wanted to laminate something of a slightly funky size, who would do 'em in the core?

Speaking of angry out of place bike people: When I was doing the United Way CN Tower climb in the fall we were all lined up for like 2 hours in the skywalk thingy. While we were waiting I noticed an angry looking guy waiting there on his own. By his expensive haircut, glasses and manicure you could tell he was a dyed in the wool suit. But he was standing around in full skin tight mapei team kit with some Asics runners on his feet. Everyone was standing around for 2 hours so we all had plenty of time to admire this guy's colourful physique and attitude.
I showed up in jeans and a T-shirt and got a lot of funny looks. There were people in front of me decked out in all their gear and they were jogging on the spot to warm up and a few of them had heart monitors on as well. I am not the fittest guy but I know that the climb is not that hard. It was very surreal.
it's freakin' dizzying, man! especially if you do the whole thing two steps at a time. how many flights was it? like 400 or something? sheesh.

That is a pretty cool idea and I suppose it would bring a lot of attention to the climb, increasing the flow of money to the United Way. I think that most people who do the climb are weekend warrior types and maybe they over-estimated how difficult it would be. Still, it isn't much of a workout at all, I don't understand why you would need a heart monitor....maybe they were dressed to impress?

The united way is as close to being a scam as a "charitable" organization can get.

Business Despot.

I've never tried it, but it's all relative! Not much of a workout for someone who rides their bike everyday is quite different than the same workout for someone who's only regular workout involves climbing into their truck!

Good point but we breathe in lots of smog, that should count for something! Has anyone else noticed that it is easier to breathe with this cold weather? I guess the pollution doesn't hang in the air or something, but I find the commute a lot nicer with the colder air.

Care to back that up at all?
In regards to the actual climb, its as hard as you want to make it, assuming you can squeeze by the slow people. I did it in 15 mins 26 seconds and I was definitely ready to collapse jelly legs lungs afire at the top. Walking would be easy, but its about how much you put in. and yeah you get dizzy and lightheaded. I don't think theres enough O2 in that shaft for all the climbers!

Ah thats unfortunate. But it was a crime perpetrated by a few people, from a local united way chapter. It makes the UW look bad, but doesn't mean it IS bad.

I'm not sure if this has been posted here before, but I just got this information a few days ago and thought it might be useful to some:
The city of Toronto has a new program where you can rent a bike locker from them. It's $10 a month (!) and it's big enough to put your entire bike in, and shoes etc.
Check out the information:

If there is enough interest, I'm sure they will put more, so if you're interested get in touch with them.

Whoops, I linked the wrong Washington Post article. This is the one. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/21/AR2006052101200.html) The way in which they accrue and account for donations is apparently borderline fraudulent. The person who had been put in charge of making it change quit last year because nobody in the United Way wants things to change.
Back to bicycle: has anyone used one of those storage lockers yet? They don't seem so great to me, but I want to hear from someone who has used one.

A rudimentary google search turned up United Way fraud cases in D.C., Michigan, Iowa and Utah. That behemoth of a charity has had its share of problems. Its not all bad but its certainly not all good either.

And re: the United Way, keep in mind that the fraud issues are for US based UW's. Not that there isn't an abuse potential in Canada, but none on record yet that I'm aware of.

agreed. all those folks bedecked in runners gear are probably in fact runners doing it to see how fast they could go. kind of like the fast group you see at the ride for heart; it attracts all kinds.
as for the diffuculty, i think i made it up in something like 14mins (wearing cycling shoes) and i was fatigued at the end soaked in sweat. it took probably 4 times as long to get down once you wait for the elevator.
can't comment on the legitimacy of the United way as a charity; i did it for the novelty and didn't raise any money.

Okay.. which one of your tall mofo's wanted the bottecchia again?
It's a 60cm frame.
I want to make this thing fair... so skill testing question comes to mind.
What theading does an Italian BB use?.
What is the width of an Italian BB?
What's your favorite Italian dish?
First one to come up with the correct/most amusing answers can have the frame.

A) The threading that matches the bottom bracket shell on an Italian frame
B) The same width as the BB shell
C) Your Mom

Well, in Track 3 we could go pretty well as fast as we could... But there's no way I could keep my line going that fast into the turns. Going as fast as I wanted to I was still getting thrown upwards about 3' when I would first enter the turn. You really have to throw your weight into the turns I found. Although instead I just sprinted out of the turns and down the straight and just let up and speed checked going into them.. :P

If this is open to those who have yet to do one of the fixed rides I keep hearing about (and assuming that it's not already taken)
1) right hand thread on both sides, which always screws me up. I barely remember the 'normal' way, and now they mess me up.
2) 7cm (just to mess with people's minds!)
3) I don't know if this is Italian, but I have Italian roommates and I have grown to love Rapini. But, it has to be done right. A little garlic..hmmm. I could make a joke about this girl I dated from Woodbridge, but she was half German...so it doesn't really count.

Apparently I'm #5 on the list for the City Hall lockers. It would be useful, even if I don't use it that often. For $10 it would be a nice place to park a bike.

If I was homeless I would probably pay 10 dollars to live in one of these. Place to leave your stuff, secure at night, probably easy to heat.
I wonder when the first person will get locked in one?
PS. they are a bit of an eyesore. They could be been more creative with the design and clad them in fine anthracite marble.
I was thinking the same thing- 10 bucks, waterproof (?) and right at the subway for easy transportation/panhandling turf.
They've had them in Detroit for some time... wonder how they're working out there?

.
I was wondering the same thing :D Lymb, I'll pass on the Bottechia. I should probably do something with the four or so frames I have before acquiring more...
And watching that video, I'd definitely be an anecdote. I way too unco-ordinated to ride at speed on a track with other people :(
