Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

speaking of which, did that guy drop dead or what. did his tunnel cave in?

Hrm, yeah, I haven't seen anything going on in his Queen street joint in like 8 months and I cycle by there every day. Didn't someone mention in this thread that he had something going on in Yorkville?

Yes, George is completely on the up and up and loves bike. We both had a good headshake at the lovely little Moulton he has where someone welded a top tube to it (which he'd since cut off). Makes me weep. He actually did have a few bikes for sale there, last I was by. An interesting little Raleigh Automatic folder was one that caught my eye, but now that I have some $ again, I may go back and look at that Moulton.... He does have quite a few parts, but in my experience not a lot of road stuff. Still it's a nice experience to go by for a visit. He's usually there around noon 'til 2, then after 5-5:30.s

And on the bike side, I bought a Fuji track bike for my partner, then she dumped me... so think carefully.

I have purchased 3 bikes for my g.f. 1 sweet classic cruiser, 1 budget mtn bike and a hybrid. She is still with me but only rides them on the trainer. So go ahead and buy away...just be sure she will never ride it and all is good.

Hrm, sounds like the shooting down at King and Dufferin; that place with the green sign, "Gate" something, has been trouble for a long time now. I haven't seen a gun pulled in Toronto since 1994, but I guess I am in the minority.

Yup, that's the one. It's actually the third one in under a year within about 100 yards of my front door. The first was an "execution" at the side of a building a few doors down. This time it was apparently just a superficial wound to the arm. It was just some stupid kids makin' a name for themselves.

Sadly having grown up around this stuff and buried a number of my own friends for the same stupidity, I was completely unfazed by the whole thing and was more put off by the late night giving a video statement - I was in until 3am. We gave notice when we woke up the next morning. So if anyone knows of any 2 bedrooms in a nice tree lined neighbourhoods.... let a brutha know :)

Now, onto this significant other bike thing. I was literally going to look at a new ride for my lady today. The reason being she's been riding my old trials bike - just a stock conversion - but the back wheel is in some serious peril and I don't feel good about her riding it anymore. I was thinking simple Urbanite. But now I'm hearin' all this bad juju talk and I'm spooked. Maybe she's gettin' rollerskates. ;)

Hey, I used to live on Sorauren. In the loft building just south of the one that's currently under contruction. That was quite a while ago though. That's how I discovered sweet, sweet Mitzi's. :)

I've hooked all of my girlfriends up with bikes, mostly used bikes that I've found cheap and fixed up a bit. The nicest was a Kona Lava Dome for 10$ at a TTC auction, what a great bike that was.

Yeah, Sorauren is great, I lived on that street about 20 years ago and it was still pretty safe back then. I used to deliver newspapers to those lofts when I was a kid; Somnambulent, maybe you owe me a christmas tip ;)

Yes please. If you know any undergrads let them know that we need votes this Wed/Thurs/Fri for bikechain. We're re-running the levy thing.

No graduate students allowed to vote though... I'll be manning a voting booth in SS on Thursday. Uh let me check the time.

Out of curiosity, is Bikechain actually part of U of T? Students pay in to it? If so, that is really cool and I wish they had had something like that when I was there. Cycling is a big part of student life and any help or training the university can provide in regards to safety or mechanics is great.

And yeah, the transit system sucks but man, I was really tempted to get off the bike and jump on a streetcar today, I haven't felt it this cold since forever. But the streets were really quiet for me, are all the cagers staying home because of the killer-ice from the Tower? The Gardiner has never been closed for this sort of thing before either, what a weird winter.

Currently no (for funding). Which is what the levy is supposed to change. It's been operating from funds from UTERN and it's free for student use and everyone else is by donation membership. Bikechain is a part of UT.

I scrutineered the last vote count. Some jackass actually took the time to vote and then wrote an extra box on the ticket that said Spoiled and then put a checkmark next to it.

When I was at UofT I was hard pressed to vote Yes to any additional student levy. When your already paying 10gs out of pocket a year to go be treated like a number its hard to want to give out some more of your money especially when you work and never use anything on campus. Maybe its different for folks whose parents are picking up the tab or who have some other method of payment. But for when it was me and it was my money that I was working 40+ hours ontop of school to get I didn't care what you needed it for you I wasn't going to support it.

So you can't afford $2 over a 4 year program? Wow. We're not asking for a million dollars like the "metro pass" levy is.

It's funny though because last time we were campaigning we had to fight a similar attitude on campus. Levy? Wtf? NO WAY! Some people did change their minds when we told them we only wanted 25cents per semester.

It's too bad that students really only consider their personal utility when it comes to paying levies. While some were absurd (the original plan to steal like $40 from every student for the original plan for Varsity Stadium), Bikechain is the best thing UofT's Sustainability office has done, well, ever. Now it needs to work on indoor/secure parking for bikes (aside from the Innis garage) to really encourage more students to ride. If students don't want to cough up a measly quarter - ESPECIALLY at UofT - then all hope is lost. I would imagine that it will fail because of typical lack of student participation and because students are cheap, cheap bastards.

Can I, as a recent grad, vote? I still have my student card and all and I wouldn't imagine that they'll check the status of everyone who votes.

You don't give change to all the homeless people you see, even though its only a few bucks.. consider student levies to be homeless people and it makes sense. Easy to ignore...

If university cost as much in Ontario as it does in Quebec I'd give you 4 dollars. But that's not the case, the reality is working 40 hours a week at a high-paying union job got me through the university I attended. Its simply a matter of UofT and/or SAC making it a priority instead of shoving yet another expense onto students who are shouldering more and more financial burden for less and less academic and cultural return.

It's a shame when democracy doesn't work to your advantage.

No one asks me if I want my taxes going to welfare or the homeless. At least the U of T students are getting the option of voting down a levy that they do not want and in most cases does not benefit from.

Saw '300' last night. Esthetically amazing. As far as the script, and the ridiculousness of the narrative, I wonder if the graphic novel sucked in the same way.

I didn't love his new Dark Knight series. The first one was amazing.

Damn, all looks and no substance? I liked the graphic novel and I thought Sin City was really good, bummer.
