I finished at the back end of the pack but not last. Got some good helmet cam footage, unfortunately it turned off due to jostling but live and learn. Were going to tape again for the poker ride.

Keith I heard about your flat. That blows hard. I wish I had gone to the CNE first. I had a tube on me that would have had your name on it. My route sucked but again live and learn. Colin I called you Craig 'cause I'm stupid. Apologies. Props to all who were there, especially those faster then me. I'll have youtube vidz up and some dvds if anyone cares in a couple of days.

well, if it makes you feel any better i was shivering from standing waiting so long. would have liked to have seen the start, but the finish was amusing. should have done a couple laps to stay warm or played tech support and run down to the cne with my patch kit...

Whoa! Check out this chain ring. It's like an exaggerated biopace. Super weird. Spotted at Spadina and Sussex.

Colin, I want one of those banana waffle things so bad right now. Damn you (because I don't have one).
you'll have to go to Chiang Mai, Thailand for one of those banannas. sorry.

and in alleycat news, good times were had by all. i finished 8th out of i don't know how many (more than 8, so... WOO HOO!) for some reason i saw an extraordinary amount of cops during the race or so i thought.
it was good to see some faces that are getting more and more familiar! i'm still tasting the shot of bacardi 151 from the first checkpoint(nasty). sorry to hear about your flat, Keith, especially coming out of retirement and all! girls that ride bikes make me drool. last and definitely least, for some reason every bike related party i go to there is a near fist fight close to the end. why? i left high school a long time ago. other than that, good times!

Couldn't tell (or didn't notice). It was a pretty rough beater as you can see.

Stoked I didn't finish dead last - dead middle suited me just fine. Great to meet you Offhoff - can't wait to see the video - and good seeing Colin again. Lame about the flat Keith. I totally had spare gear. Way too much fun and I'm definitely in Saturday and again in... April (I forget the date now)? Everyone was impressively fast. Must sleep now.

Sounds like y'alls had fun at the race.. I'm sorry I missed it. I ran late running errands/eating supper/etc so I couldn't make it out.

Keith: what's the word for mtn biking on sunday? I have band #2 practice on Sunday at 2pm as we have a show coming up during the Images Festival. If we don't do mtn biking I'm gonna go do a road ride with Dave (but I'd prefer mtn biking!).

go outside!

rode along the laskeshore. it's clear of snow/ice, although there's lots of puddles, and twigs and **** (literally/figuratively).

i saw only one other cyclist. a fair number of joggers. a surprising number of cops too, considering i was mostly on the path.

there was a noticable temperature difference when i crossed the humber bridge and then back again. a chilly fog is laying over the center of toronto, but a strong southeast wind is pushing it west. neat conditions by the lake, anyway.

Now that's good timing. I start riding back to the office from the Linux Caffe just as that quick little bout of heavy rain starts. Now my pant(ie)s are soaked.

On the other hand, I did score a delicious portuguese custard tart and an espresso at Rosa's in Kensington. Mmmmm.. I had a craving that had to be fulfilled.

ps. cavernmech: you've totally created a monster by giving me one of those a couple weeks ago. I'm craving them constantly now. I can feel it going straight to my thighs.. ;)

Owen Pallett, he's actually a member of Arcade Fire and BSS occasionally as well as helping out on the new Great Lake Swimmers album. He's amazing live, so is the album IMO.

< 6 degrees of Toronto Indie:
A. One of my bandmates in my Other Band (Scarborough A/V) played drums for a while in the Hidden Cameras (THC.. uhhuhuh)
B. He is also in another band (Republic Of Safety) which contains a member of The Hidden Cameras, Maggie MacDonald.

ps. I just googled "hidden cameras" and it returned an article with that title from Toronto Life about that altercation between the motorist and messenger in Kensington last year.

Is it a road bike now?

Yeah, I liked it a lot as a SS but I got a cheap deal on the black 105 9-speed shifters, so it is back to gears. It is really nice so far. I guess I should get some black cranks but meh, it works great right now. I am getting it dialled in right now, so there is no handlebar tape yet, just in case I want to move the brifters around a bit.

I have a quick question actually, for the mechanics: I think the chain is too long as I am jumping a couple of gears, can I use the magic link thingy that came with the chain (Ultegra 9-speed) to open the chain and then knock a couple of links off? Or is best to just use the chain-tool anywhere on the chain and use a new magic link thingy? Thanks for any help.

ehh? if you have a chain tool, why bother with a magic link thingy? i always removed links with a chain tool, and put chains back together with a chain tool. no magic link thingy here.

but it'll work either way.

edit: jet, you are effing tall.

Hrm, I've tried to put together a chain with the tool but I always have a hard time with getting the pin into the links perfectly.

damnit! I left work and my right pedal/crankarm/cleat/something felt a little weird and wobbly. It got worse really quickly and so I pulled in to check it out. I've been hearing a squeaking noise occasionally for the past few weeks and so I thought maybe my bottom bracket bit the dust or a crankarm had loosened or something.. turns out my pedal had unthreaded about 75% of the way. I next to La Carerra so I popped in to use a wrench and I couldn't get the pedal to thread in straight! Do you think I fawked the threads in the crankarm in that short distance? The ones on the pedal looked fine. grrr! Of course, I was so annoying I just torqued it in there anyway which probably will result in me toasting the threads on my eggbeaters as well, but I was *not* walking/ttc'ing it home.

You weren't pushing the pin all the way out were you? The pin should stop just before coming out. Is it a 1/8" chain?

ehh? if you have a chain tool, why bother with a magic link thingy? i always removed links with a chain tool, and put chains back together with a chain tool. no magic link thingy here.

but it'll work either way.

edit: jet, you are effing tall.

Most chain pins are peened so if you use a chain tool you shear the peening off (:D ) and the pin won't reseat properly. I tend to use the magic link thingy and just drop links as needed. Brief blurb on peening and shearing here

Oh, and I'm feeling happy if a little poorer.
