ehh? if you have a chain tool, why bother with a magic link thingy? i always removed links with a chain tool, and put chains back together with a chain tool. no magic link thingy here.

but it'll work either way.

edit: jet, you are effing tall.

Eh Boro, looks who's back!

Yeah, I liked it a lot as a SS but I got a cheap deal on the black 105 9-speed shifters, so it is back to gears. It is really nice so far. I guess I should get some black cranks but meh, it works great right now. I am getting it dialled in right now, so there is no handlebar tape yet, just in case I want to move the brifters around a bit.

I have a quick question actually, for the mechanics: I think the chain is too long as I am jumping a couple of gears, can I use the magic link thingy that came with the chain (Ultegra 9-speed) to open the chain and then knock a couple of links off? Or is best to just use the chain-tool anywhere on the chain and use a new magic link thingy? Thanks for any help.

Shimano chains use a specific pin type link. If you got a master link it is prolly not Shimano. Do NOT break Shimano chains the regular way. when you break one you have to knock the link pin all the way out and replace it with the appropriate pin. There are master type links that will work. If it is skipping more likely it is a sticky link than the chain being too long.
upon closer inspection of the pic...yer chain looks to be too long. With the chain on the big ring and smallest cog a vertical line should pass thru the 2 jockey wheel bolts.

damnit! I left work and my right pedal/crankarm/cleat/something felt a little weird and wobbly. It got worse really quickly and so I pulled in to check it out. I've been hearing a squeaking noise occasionally for the past few weeks and so I thought maybe my bottom bracket bit the dust or a crankarm had loosened or something.. turns out my pedal had unthreaded about 75% of the way. I next to La Carerra so I popped in to use a wrench and I couldn't get the pedal to thread in straight! Do you think I fawked the threads in the crankarm in that short distance? The ones on the pedal looked fine. grrr! Of course, I was so annoying I just torqued it in there anyway which probably will result in me toasting the threads on my eggbeaters as well, but I was *not* walking/ttc'ing it home.
The pedal will be fine. The Alu crank arm on the other hand will prolly be stripped or cross threaded. I may have a used one for replacement.

Thanks for the input; yes, that is how I figured out that the chain is too long by seeing it in the photo. I have a couple of master links somewhere in my apartment, I will get it fixed up tomorrow, too gnackered to be bothered now and the bike is still pretty wet. Thanks again.

Hrm, I've tried to put together a chain with the tool but I always have a hard time with getting the pin into the links perfectly.

Hmm that whole pin thing is kind of news to me. Normally I just push it through the chain tool adjust & push it back in, wiggle & twist to get the stiffness out. Guess I’ve been a bit lucky with it not breaking on me.
A black crank would look wicked on there, but looks great none the less what works. Works.

Cavit8: nice wheels

Most chain pins are peened so if you use a chain tool you shear the peening off (:D ) and the pin won't reseat properly. I tend to use the magic link thingy and just drop links as needed. Brief blurb on peening and shearing here

@cavit8: h0tt wheels!

Man what a beautiful night. I'm gettin' pretty stoked with this hoody/tshirt only business. Work has been so nuts it's been nice to get a sunny warm ride home. Had to run some foodie errands in the market as well so got to fart around a lil' and take my time getting home.

I've just transfered some pics from last night to my machine. I'll post a link later - if my sorry old ass doesn't fall asleep early again.

hah.. indeed. My heart bleeds.. :P Then again, this bike has turned into The Beater, so it's not like I plan on replacing the crankset with anything nicer. Oh well, Lemond to work tomorrow.

I'll try to drop it off at Cavern tomorrow. And, seriously, it's a pretty gory game, so you'll definitely want to screen it before giving your kid nightmares after you jam a Sword of Chaos down a Minotaur's throat and give him a tonsilectomy.

I got punched by a taxi driver on the way to work!

I gave him the old 'you just brutally cut me off for no reason' hood slap right outside of my work after he pulled a dangerous U turn that I wildly signalled him not to do, and the guy hopped out of the cab like greased lightning and came toe to toe with me "WHY YOU HIT MY CAR?!? WHY YOU HIT MY CAR!?" "You cut me off buddy I nearly went over your hood!" then he pushed me, I threatened to call the police, then he said that I should call the police and punched me in the shoulder! My shoulder hurts a little now! It was a sissy punch but whatever. A nearby cabbie managed to pacify the guy enough that he didn't do anything he would later regret (we were directly in front of the 2 CCTV cameras on the side of my work building), so I didn't bother collecting his cab number or license plate.

Crazy though! Silly angry people!

Damn man....that is wack...hope your 'ight...lotta bad drivers out there today...take it ez...*** you shoulda taken his plates and all and called the po po on his a$$ what a punk!!

Bottom line. You hit his car with your hand with no damage...that is not a crime. He hits your person with his fist....that is assault. Don't let these clowns get away with that crap dude.
Royal Taxi? Those guys are the worst.

Do you need damage for property crimes? I can't be bothered to look it up but it seems like you could make an argument that even without damage it was still a 'crime' to hit the car. A threat of violence is still assault.

But, I'm pretty sure that the police would care more about physical assault then property 'damage' when there is no damage.

I'm not a lawyer....although I play one on T.V.:D
Seriously though....I can't see how you can be charged with property damage if there is none. Mischief? Maybe. Is a defensive fender tap a threat of violence or a warning like a horn honk?
