so i work in social services. today i managed to fix a flat for one of our clients, but i can only do so much!
any suggestions for a place to send low-income folks? i could do some research, but it seems like y'all are looking for something to do... i don't know if the community bike network is open/has funding? i've never been to bike pirates? is bike chain for students exclusively? would shops downtown get annoyed with people coming in to use the pump? any other places i'm forgetting?
thanks!

Bike Pirates is prolly a good place to suggest...but they are only open a couple days a week. Any shop that doesn't have a pump for public use and/or be willing to pump up folks tires for free is not a shop worth recommending to anyone.

Does anyone use a beanie type thing under their helmet? I was thinking about how much sun my head must get riding, and I thought it might be good to wear something under it which might help my sweat too

I've had the craziest week in the best way possible with a combination of amazing weather and wonderful news from work. Sorry the alleycat video is taking awhile but paying projects have to take precedence. Hopefully it'll be up soon and I'll have DVDs for the safety meeting.

The mastercuff at Cavern really got me thinking about hand cuffs and locking bikes. I asked a couple of people who suggested these (http://www.uscav.com/Productinfo.aspx?productID=9203&TabID=1&CatID=5230) and I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a pair so we can bundle our order. I wouldn't suggest using them alone to lock a bike but to keep your wheels attached to your frame and using a mini U to lock the frame they might be perfect. They are also hinged instead of using a chain so they are much harder to bypass.
Just a thought.

dude says 12,000km, 120 days. damn b!
I'd personally be wanting to take at least a day off a week as a rest day too, so that would be like 120km days 6 days a week, regardless of any external or internal conditions.
He plans to be going through mexico and central america starting in mid july as well. BRUTAL HEAT!

I just want to ride with a general idea of where I'm going. If I were him I'd probably budget 6 months for a trip like that... If you miss one day, you're going to have to make up for 100km of lost distance which would be brutal, even spreading it out over a week.

100 km a day average for 120 straight days? That is crazy. Add an extra 30 days and then you can at least stop at the occasional place for some relaxation. He must be a masochist or sumthin.

I can't imagine riding on the roads in Mexico. Whenever I'm there, I keep noticing how crazy they all drive. Hopefully this person's not from Woodbridge. They seem to get shot a lot down there.
