anyone here built a SS? Thinking about singlating my old mountain bike. Any chain tensioner recommendations?

For the singulator, if at all possible get the chain going over the tension pulley (you can apply tension either way). Going over the tensioner will give you better tooth engagement for when your start BOMBING MAD HITS! BOOYA!

I converted my '97 Mongoose Iboc into a single back in 2004 - used the singleator and a cog spacer kit from urbane to get chain tension / chainline worked out on an XT rear hub - worked out just fine, and I've referred to the thing as the 'Tranq Tank' ever since, due to the inordinately high levels of exhaustion I achieve by trying to ride it as fast as my Ciocc ;)

Winterbourne - those grips WERE hot... I asked the guy derek (I think that was his name?) about it, and he said that he had fabricated them for about $10 from leather he sourced at a shop on king st. and some carpet tape. The trick, aparently, is that there's 2 layers of that fine fine leather there, sandwiched with carpet tape, for extra padding. I'm going to try it on my touring bike.

ah the don... I have a real love-hate relationship with those trails (the single track stuff). it's so close and convinent... yet so full of rusty nails, broken glass and human pooh.

there is some nice trails up by stouffvile side rd. and bayview ave... but it's 45 min to and hour just to ride there... and on mtb knobbies it can be exhausting after. Still a few times during the summer I'll make a day of it and go there on my own.

Sheeyat - morphine to the rescue I hope.
That mountain biking thing at stouffville/bayview is like 3 km up the road from here heh :D

If I had to pay $13 for the bike show, I would've been seriously pissed, but thanks to Traffic Jammers complimentary passes it was good. The flatland competition stuff was awesome, although I was expecting scantily clad women posing around bikes and stuff (nope). I was like the only chinese guy there and I felt seriously out of place.

And yeah, I'm also grateful I didn't spend $13. I enjoyed the pre-show coffee more. Especially since we could hang out on the front patio.. woo! Getting me excited for Spring already. :D Patio season!

I built a nice SS out of a Miele frame and a spacer kit from Urbane but I didn't use a tensioner, is it really a necessary thing? I just finagled with it a bit and it seemed fine. I gave it away though, dumb thing to do, eh?

Yeargh - I agree. The show was definitely not worthy of the $13 cover. I got in for designing a ginormous route-map for the A.R.C. booth and staffing it for three hours on saturday afternoon... dang man, I don't even know if I believe in bikelanes.

Anywho, due to my characteristic sporadic internet-ness and a psychotic work week, I lament not having realized that a pod see below of y'all were going to be attending - I would have relished the chance to meet some of ye.

Instead, I ended up acting as a crutch for my friend Brian who got food poisoning off of those foul-assed mini-donuts they were peddling in the south-east corner of the place. Vile.

That said, it wasn't all bad - the best deal in the place was (racer sportif?) selling off pairs of rubino pro slicks for $70... cheaper than a pair of the poopier (but still damned fine) rubino intrepids from Urbane that I've been subsisting on. I needed new rubber, so I gobbeld that right up. Maybe it's placebo, but i think they're a mite more supple...

hey shiznaz, if you haven't installed that phil bb yet, is there any chance that you could hook me up with a measurement? I'm curious about the internal diameter of the adjusting cup, as I've got a vintage EDCO bb that had an adjustable-chainline design (ie. two adjustng cups like the phil or miche units), but I had to have the cups machined out of the frame that the bb came with, as the whole affair was seized into the frame. I've been wondering for a while if the phil cups could accommodate the Edco cartridge...

Thanks!

I think that I will do the niagara ride again this year either the over night one or the same day "Hairshirt" if I get a decent amount of training in the week or so before.

Because we all know the Chinese don't ride bikes. :p Besides this is the T-Dot that don't matter a whit. It was nice metting you guys too , and yes the coffee was the best part of the whole ting, the show definately lacked IMHO.

Cramerotti alert.... I looked at this puppy that's been whinning in my basement a little closer and it's a 48 I'm pretty sure, so that means, IT'S TOO DAMED SMALL!!!!

Do I strip it and make look a little cuter in hopes of a sale/trade? I still should work that busted seat post out of it.

no talking about geared carbon bikes in the FG forum. ;)

Weirdly enough I sometimes get the impression people consider it more of a sin to talk about carbon than it is to talk about geared bikes. :P

Well, I waited about a month before I started riding again, and then I realized that riding didn't really irritate it anyway. But obviously there are lots of variables. But, I'd rather take it easy than risk making things worse.

So how long will can I expect to be out of commission for? I am seriously bored, and it has only been 4 days. Codene is my friend though.

percocet's are friendlier :D

how many did you break? or crack (fractured). I fractured 2 around my left back closer to my spine. It was 4 weeks before I could sleep comfortably in bed and about 6 or 8 weeks before I could raise my arms to put a non-button type shirt on.

Darkmother,

Somnabulant and I were wondering about your absence during the show. While we were at the dirt course we saw a guy (avec full face helmet) tearing around w/a spoke card on his rear wheel and assumed that was just you taking down punks all incognito. ;)

Heal up quick(ish), man. I hope you feel better soon,

If I had to pay $13 for the bike show, I would've been seriously pissed,

ouch. that pretty much sums it up. i got to the show late on sunday (3pm-ish) and probably missed everyone. i think all the deals were gone at that point too. i was looking for a pair of dominators and nuthin'. i was surprised that the velodrome in london (forest city?) didn't have a booth. it also amused me to no end how all the bmx kiddies were dressed EXACTLY the same way. dress code code must've been in effect.

Forest City did indeed have a booth....in the eastern section where all the club stuff was. I was surprised as well at the lack of good deals. If you want a $10,000 carbon time trial bike this is the place. Otherwise it kind of blew chunks.

Forest city did have a booth (I got their brochure). and yes, all the 14 year old BMX kids are funny. They travel in small packs and talk really loud.

So, what's left? Looks pretty complete to me! Although you mentioned getting a front brake. I can't remember, did you tell me that you know Urbane has the 105 brakes on sale? I know you want something in black.

Yep the 105 black front brake. Got the crosstop levers off e-bay that i'm waiting on & some bar tape.
Done Done & Done. NOT!

Just one, on my lower left side, mabye 6 inches from my spine. I think it is broken right across, b/c I can hear it grinding and shifting around when I move (kind of makes me want to puke just thinking about it). Anyway, it is not that bad, most of the time, I am just bored from sitting around all day.

I was kind of hoping you'd say I'll be good in 2 weeks, oh well :)

On a tangent, I hate the TTC with every ounce of my tortured being. I took it to work this morning, and I don't think I can face taking it home. I think I will ride tomorrow.

i definitely have ttc rage. i get physically angry paying for it, waiting for it, and riding on it. but i love public transportation everywhere else in the world.
