PARTS UNKNOWN 216 Augusta 416-788-5360 Vintage bicycles, parts and repairs.

It's back in the alley a fair ways. On Augusta there's a middle eastern market on the west side just after the alley way as you head south and there's a central american grocer right across from the alleyway. As per darkmother's directions it's on the West side.

So here is the skinny on our new track frames. We are building steel frames based on the Rossin track frame. Basically a 75degree headtube and seat tube. The frames will be done with Columbus Zona tubing. We are doing our initial build right now and should have a couple 56cm frames available for pictures and for sale within a few weeks. I will post pics of the frames once they are done, and we will always have one on display over at Cavern Cycles (179Queen St East). This is a joint project that Keith and I are working on. We will be selling built bikes with these frames as well.

The frames will sell for $500, the price for full bikes and frame/fork/headset deals will be available once we spec out the rest of the build kit (within the next week).

Yes, they definitely are local. This was the primary reason we decided to do this. I mean there are plenty of inexpensive track bikes out there (KHS, FUJI). But those inexpensive track bikes all have low end parts and the frames are mostly made in the orient.

So what we're going to offer is a Canadian made frame, built up with all good parts for barely any more than the low end entry level track bikes.

I am just excited to attach our names to our own line of bikes!

How is it going to be branded?

I thought just a plain lugged, steel fork would be cheap; i picked up a gloss black one for a 27" wheel for $30. I got it from Ideal Bike last august (who have moved to another city, not much help now obviouisly). Maybe for more common [read modern] tire sizes they cost more?

OK I am looking for a single speed Steel frame bike and it has to coast cause of crash injury I can't crank non stop and the bike has to hold just under 300 pounds ( me ) :rolleyes: and colours???

If you want a COASTING frame, this one might not be the one for you. We are not putting any braze ons on the bike, so you won't be able to easily run a rear brake. You could put a brake on and use zip ties for the cable, but honestly I wouldn't think that you would buy a new frame and then use zip ties on it.

We haven't decided on what colour the first run will be. All I can say for now is that all of the first bikes we produce will be 56cm. Because we're doing this cautiously. We won't do another run until one of two things happen.

1. We sell the bikes (or framesets)
2. We get orders for other sizes with a 50% deposit on the frame

If things go as well as we hope. We may have a full range of sizes available within a few months. But we don't want to mass produce these. Hoping to keep these affordable, and keep demand higher than our production (don't want any sitting in the shop collecting dust!)

I must be ********, can anyone point me to the exact address of 'parts unknown', I spent probably a half hour wandering around kensington market two weeks ago looking for it, asking some of the shop owners too....and never found it, totally lost here. All I'm told is it's in an alleyway somewhere.. what street is it on? what shops are next to it? any help? thanks

they should re-route critical mass to yonge street between bloor and queen. cruise up and down that strip for a few hours. ...the things people do with cars on a saturday night... jeeez.

damn stupid bikeroom.com.... I ordered a set of sugino 75 track cranks with 170 length and square taper BB, but they send me a set of FSA Vigorelli cranks at 167.5 length with ISIS BB pattern. They gave me no warning of this switch, but I'm leaving for europe in less than 2 weeks and theres not really time to send it back for replacement. I went to the LBS to see if they had the right BB -- they didn't, but Nadir ordered one for me. Its going to be something like 90$ plus tax, which sucks because I really didn't think I'd have to blow 100 extra dollars when I already have a perfectly good BB on the bike right now...

Last time I ever order from that crappy operation. one of my housemates has had bad experiences with them too. Plus their customer service sucks. When I first asked them about the cranks I wanted to order they responded with a one word email 'no'. This is the shortest email I have ever been sent, and it should have tipped me off to their shoddy service... Keep away!

You should send it back for a refund and tell them they are jerks. If that's even possible. That sucks.

shiz, can you get them on the phone? perhaps try to reason with 'em if possible.. where are they located? i know 2 weeks isn't much time to work with. i'd be nagging their ass off..

hmm.. well I kind of backed myself into a corner becuase I immediately went to the LBS to see if they had the right BB (assuming it would be in the 20-40 dollar range), and ended up getting nadir to order one out of a catalogue without really thinking it through. The FSA cranks were 50 dollars more than the sugino so I figured if I could keep the BB under that price it would be sort of like a free upgrade. Anyhow, the BB has already been ordered and I would hate to screw over nadir...

So due partially to my own stupidity I will just have to grin and bear it... maybe 167.5 cranks will be better (those 2.5mm extra clearance will really help me on those turns :p ). At least those cranks will look pimptastic on my bike....

and they are located in BC, so any shipping back and forth of parts would need to be quick and expensive.

I tried to get some detailed pics of the lug area so you guys could see that powder-coating is a little thicker than paint, I hope that comes through. Oh, forgive me, but this bike is very dirty as I haven't had a chance to clean it from it's winter rides. Also, I am planning on changing the fork and stem/headset and making it a fixie this summer. Tell me what you think.

Heheh, yeah, I know, don't ask me why, but that is the most comfy for me. I sit my coccyx right at the very back so there is no pinching of the ol'vas deferens ;)

No, I left the fork as it is because I like a chrome fork with this style of road-bike. It could use a re-chroming, but I think that is kind of expensive, so I just bought a new aluminium fork and will get it set up this summer sometime. I could have had the fork sandblasted and coated, but it just wouldn't have looked as good, I thought.

the chrome fork looks pretty sweet on the ciocc. i swapped out my red track fork for a chrome one that's drilled for a front brake... it doesn't look half bad staying with that old school colour scheme. any idea if you're going to replace the rear hub, cog choice, etc.?

Hrm, hadn't really thought about it. I was just going to find a full rear-wheel on eBay, hopefully with a flip-flop so I can switch back and forth. Any suggestions? I am going to aim for something cheap because I may not like the fixed style. I ride downtown only and fixed might be a bit dangerous. I am a fairly experienced rider, but I think that riding fixed will take a lot of practice.

Nope that's CAVERNMECH, but Keith is the only shop in Toronto who carries the LEVEL Hubs. I am ROB from Bikeophile (and I am the distributor for Level)

Bikeophile is run by a buddy of mine named Rob. He does mail order/internet sales. I run the Cavern and Rob and I do business together. I help him out with tech stuff, mechanics and the like. We are both small operators and kind of joined forces as we dont have the clout of the big shops when it comes to buying power. Generally speaking we both carry similar lines but with Rob doing all the on-line stuff. It has been a good arrangement allowing us to serve people in a retail environment and on-line as well. This has also allowed us to join forces in our pursuit of the hand-built custom track bike line we are currently working on. Hope this clears up any confusion. K.

The MSRP for the Rear Hub (From the Manufacturer is $220USD). We have talked to them have been able to offer them for $205 CANADIAN.

The Front Hub will be selling for $125 Canadian

As of today, Level has not shipped the order to us yet. So I am not sure the exact date they will be in. Hopefully within the next week or two. I know that there are folks (like Shiznaz) who want wheels by Keith, so the day they arrive there will be stock given to Cavern.
