Rides and Races - Toronto Fixed

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Which is longer than the median car commute for Toronto residents (4.5km) so hats off to you.
Hehe, I didn't think of that, thanks. Also, I often ended up on Spadina and if anyone remembers Spadina before there were streetcars on it, you will know that it was a battle zone. Six, sometimes eight, sometimes nine lanes of broken and potholed ashpalt, strewn with shopping carts, rats, refuse, delivery trucks, old ladies with push-carts full of vegetables, vagrants with push-carts full of beer bottles, cars, white work vans and the infamous Spadina bus (the TTC encouraged their drivers to use their horns on Spadina, I am sure of it) made for an interesting commute.

I was going to suggest those cool clip on fenders for a Steamroller, but that'd probably be no good for a bike that'll be sitting around the school for long periods of time.,,storm drains and hose clamps for that ugly look

Is anyone doing the Chico 24 hr race this weekend at Albion? I do it every year with some buddies from Newmarket. Massive 10 person team this year!
As a matter of fact...yes. What campsite are you guys at? I will make sure to stop by for a pint. Only night laps for me..YIPPEE!!
We are at campsites 321, 322 and 325. There are a ton of us as you can imagine.
otherwise, the ride to york is not too bad. i used to ride from queen/bathurst and it took an easy 45mins, though you will likely inevitably have to use some main streets (busy, but i never had problems). the route i used was> http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1066810
I've been out that way a couple of times to the UPS depot... may I suggest taking Sentinel road just to the west of Keele. Good luck with the commute! it'll be well worth it I think to get the benefits of a neighbourhood such as Little Italy.

Yeah, did you see me? I was standing on Sherbourne for like 10 minutes checking out this nice abandoned frame; it was a lugged Velosport with some old Shimano parts. I would have taken it but I was too far from home and would have felt like a criminal taking off the brakes (all that I needed). I guess you recognized me from my bike? I was on my Razesa yesterday.

Couldn't catch him? ;) Keith says there's a likelyhood the Pake will be ready for next weeks sprints. I am SS however and can't partake. Should i borrow a wheel and learn fixed riding while spinting, or does this have bad idea written all over it?

Whoa, seriously? That is funny, I didn't hear or see you guys; I hope I didn't come off as rude. I was staring at that abandoned frame for so long that I lost track of time and really had to book to make an appointment. Did you see me get cut off by that white work-van? The bastard came right into the bike lane at least two times, I was pissed!

Geez, I must have been really zoned out or something, sorry! I was rushing, yeah. My friend who is a parole officer needed a hand with one of his "clients" and he sounded pretty serious on the phone, so I was really booking. Also, that stupid white van was taking up most of my concentration, the bugger!

True. But I bet once you use the fixed you never go back. I have a flip flop on my IRO and fig'd I'd pick up another cog once it was built and my wallet recovered. After riding fixed a week I've never bothered grabbing that second cog.
Did Unwin end up happening last night? I was still insanely tired from the awards on Sunday and ended up going to be early and even skipping out on a show I'd waited months to see - Heartless Bastards.
@Dan: You still got those drops? Can I grab them from you today?
Got a great shot of a cop parked - car off, no hazards or cherries - in the bike lane on Beverly and having what appeared be a hilarious and personal convo on his celly. I'll upload to my bike lane bastardo set on flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/neckface/sets/72157600419750830/) when I get home. I figured it highlighted perfectly the significance of "Safe Cycling (http://www.blogto.com/city/2007/06/toronto_police_to_crack_down_on_cycleunfriendly_drivers/)" week here - btw, most inappropriate name evar!

Well, in my ward anyway. In the whole toronto, it's 5 km.
The source is the 2001 Transportation Tomorrow survey which is used for a whack of stuff about commuting habits.

Agreed - The third set of wheels I bought after going fixed I got fixed / fixed instead of fixed / free. I realized at that point that the chances of me ever wanting to ride SS freewheel again were slim to none... At least not for some time, anyway.

Are there any skilled amature messenger bag makers among the bunch of you. I need some help with a current art project, and my sewing skills are under par. Possible renumeration, or colaberation. I apologize if this sounds solicitous, it was really meant to be more conversational...

Yes I thought there would be some pro bag makers, but possible renumeration really means that I am broke and cannot pay for what your labour is really worth. These are not for messenger bags, but I would like that kind of aesthetic.

A question for those who play polo at Trinity Bellwoods:
I'm not lookin' to start a fight here but are there not any other / better places to play than in the bowl at Trinity?
I understand that it's not exclusively a dog park so I'm obviously cool with it being used for other things but it seems odd to play in the only off leash park in the area and think that nothing bad is going to happen...You're hitting a ball, dogs chase balls (well, mine doesn't, but he'll chase dogs who chase balls) - eventually someone is going to hit a dog and it's going to get ugly.
On a different note: I'm not all too familiar with bike polo... are there different styles? I seem to remember seeing more of a "ball hockey" style played somewhere and figured that would be super fun - I debated making a mallet and joining up but the "chase each other around the post" style the folks at Trinity Bellwoods play seems a little tame for my liking...

Yeah totally. I do have a hankerin' for a road bike - which I hope to get before the end of the summer - but I'm so crazy stoked on my bike. Thanks Keith!
Sorry 'bout the repost folks. Just saw it and about caught the keyboard aflame. That's right, aflame.
I'm glad I didn't miss the sprints. I take it there'll be another attempt next week?
Came upon a hit cyclist on my home today at Church and Carlton. I noticed this Audi with it's front passenger wheel almost touching the curb with it's ass way out in the lane and a cyclist standing on the curb. I noticed when he turned that the wheel was not facing the right way. The crash had loosened his stem so I stopped and tightened it for him, gave the bike a very basic looking at - with my very limited wrenching abilities - and said it would get him home but he should have it looked at asap. I also advised him to get all the guys info - the car was still there and they were just getting back in - because he'll feel worse tomorrow. Suck man. I said, "Unfortunately, we've all been there."
"Cycle Safely" week everyone! w00t! w00t!
Ps. Picture a horse riding a bicycle. Hah... that rules!
