Bob does it on purpose.

I buy that he says "Tour day frants" on purpose. But I find it hard to believe that he selectively mispronounces about 50% of the riders' names, plus most of the start/finish towns.

edit: plus he's just a dingleberry. ;)

All part of his "American charm", it's all for the US viewers, being an ugly American. If he was flowing the names off in french/flemish and rolling his R's the views would hate him. That's what Phil is for. Bob is Phil's comic relief.

Oh! I was riding to my Mom's in Oakville the other day and passed a bike cop, so I asked him whether I could listen to an ipod on my bike or not. He looked at me like I was crazy and said "of course you can".

I don't know if we discussed this here, or if it was just something I thought about. But according to this cop, ipods are fine. He said you were not allowed to ride with a Zune though (ok, he didn't, but I think that should be the law! :) )

I passed a guy on the way to work this morning who had his headphones in and regardless of the fact that I basically yelled "YOU'VE GOT A FLAT" from a foot away he didn't hear me and looked totally confused.

I used to ride with my iPod all the time - but then during the winter I figured that with the roads being as they were I'd stop because it was unsafe... When the ground thawed I opted to leave the buds out of my ears for good. I'm sure if I were going on a long solo ride I'd pop them in on low volume but for city riding? No thanks...

I think it's insane that a cop can give you a $110 ticket for not having a bell but it's perfectly fine to ride a bike in the city and not be able to hear someone else's.

I listen to my ipod all the time. I think like everything else, it depends upon how you use it. I never have it loud (just a preference that has nothing to do with biking), and I tend to think of myself as a 'safe' rider.

It's not meant to be an insult, but I've seen a lot of people ride who are pretty aggressive, and that's just not how I roll.

Not to get into a debate by any means, but having gotten the door prize once, and hearing others on here getting hit by cars, in most cases it's not the cyclists fault. That said, having it so loud that you can't hear someone yelling at you, is just asking for trouble.

What's up with the Deda Pista bars being a 31.7 clamp diameter? Is that a screwy number? I guess I can always just shim it to fit into a 31.8 stem (or get the Deda 31.7 stem).

The whole time I was watching the tt, I'm thinking, "wow...he's riding smart and riding hard." At the end, he comes in like 2 minutes ahead of anyone else, and I'm thinking, "oh ****, he's doping." Kinda sad that we're conditioned to think "doper" when a dude rides well.

31.7 is fine with 31.8. I think even a pop can shim would end up being more than .1mm

This is not a new phenomenon. I think it was the great Eddy Merckx who said " You can't win the Tour on mineral water alone" .

Seized chainring bolts... Any ideas?

The chainring I need is on my winterbike so I figured they were rusted on but after getting two off, they appear to be "salted" together - is that even physically possible? If so, maybe I could just boil the crank / chainring and get those ****ers out?

Short of drilling them out, does anyone have any tricks for getting them off? Brute force didn't work... I stripped the flathead slots and now I'm nursing a sore arm... :)

It's gonna git 'cha either comin' or going. Such is the way of large bodies of water meeting up with land masses.

I have had good luck with pouring a pot of boiling water over the affected part. That being said if the slots on the female side of the bolt are stripped you may have to drill them out. Use a bit the same diameter as the shaft of the male bolt and drill the head off. You will obviously need some new bolts to replace the drilled ones.

g'morning....yawn/stretch

So when are yall going to have to see who ownzorz TO East or West? I used to live East & liked it better til Keith hooked us up with where we are now. I'd still like it better if I had a nice place down near the park, maybe on Logan or something. Does preferring the east side make me a bad westerner? they have bonjour brioche, nothing like that on the west side, I used to ride to work every morning down queen and stop in for to pick up the best croissants in TO. Noting that good on a ride downtown from here..I only get by there qonce or twice a month now, though I am noticeably thinner for it.

And hey, if you're not busy on Friday night already there will be a parking lot Keirin race and Silent Auction on Friday at the ass end of Cherry Street. It should be fun and it's to raise a few dollars to send down to the US. A Minneapolis member of the extended messenger community died yesterday from injuries sustained in a one vehicle accident, his family needs a hand getting him back to his hometown of Minneapolis and properly laid to rest. Glen befriended the fellow when he was staying down in Minneapolis and is throwing this together if you want to put something up to auction or something.

I didn't think of the hot water till this morning, I wish I had last night! I figure if I want to avoid trying to drill them out I could always just dremel new slots into the female side of the bolt and go about it that way... I figured I'd maybe drill it out using sequentially larger bits to avoid accidentally going too large but I guess I could just measure my bits against a fresh bolt to get the right size... Thanks for the tips!

Yeah, I've got a few packs of short chainring bolts - with all the conversions I'd been working on for friends I figure having a few sets kickin around would make sense. :)

Request: no racing between July 28th and August 3rd.

Request #2: if anyone's interested in donating to a good cause, I'm doing the bike ride to Montreal again this year for the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation. It's all to raise money for services to help people living with AIDS around the GTA. The ride leaves this Sunday and I'm still supposed to be coming up with ~$1000 in pledges (!!!) ... so ya, any help would be greatly appreciated.

$690 to go! Thanks to all who have helped out so far, if anyone else can chip in a bit I might actually be able to pull this off. Expect daily reminders until Saturday ... I'll wear you *******s down!

g'morning....yawn/stretch

A messenger in Portland died yesterday from injuries sustained on the job, his family needs a hand getting him back to his hometown of Minneapolis and properly laid to rest. Glen befriended the fellow when he was staying down in Minneapolis and is throwing this together if you want to put something up to auction or something.

Oh and sorry if you won something and haven't got it yet, it's not going anywhere don't worry, just got my schedule jacked up

Bonjour Brioche do make some yummy croissant but for some excellent west side goods try Clafouti on Queen a few doors east of Strachan. They are just as good if not better than Bonjour's.
A date for the east-west side challenge has yet to be determined. It looks like the east side might be challenged to come up with the volume of riders the west side has......some kind of "draft" might be needed to even up the #'s. I think some brainstorming will happen this weekend to come up with an appropriate date.

I don't know about Bonjour Brioche, but when it comes to Clafouti, the early bird gets the croissant. They sell out real quick.

Also: pony up for Mike, everyone! :)

Ahah croissants of good caliber on the West side! Thanks Keith, it takes forever to find the good stuff in TO with a diner or restaurant every 20 feet, not that I'm complaining, nossir

btw while you warned me against it, some folk would like me to drop their winnings off to your place? I've got em bagged & tagged for easy maintenance and it's just a few...is okay?
