What, you're getting your hair cut again? It's so hot in my apartment as soon as I get home I collapse into a puddle, so I haven't finished my SS mtb - that's my excuse. I should really tune the fork anyway before I take this evil out on the trails.

hahah.. No, Dave has something goin' on at 7:30 so we're getting a ride in earlier. And yeah, the heat is gonna be disgusting, but I'd actually prefer to be out in it and moving around rather than sitting in my apartment and stewing in my own juices. Can't get a good breeze going through there at all. Thankfully we have an AC unit in the bedroom at least.

so i've been trying to work on keeping my temper in traffic lately, and today i actually managed at one point to think clearly enough to reply coherantly AND quote the relevant HTA section! it seemed like there were a bunch of peds with cameras eagerly trying to capture another possible brew-ha-ha, so i wonder if it'll show up on youtube?

Also: speaking of tempers, I screamed into some guy's window who pulled into the bikelane immediately in front of me on my way home from the Don. I preach the zen mindset, but sometimes you just gotta go nutzoid. :P Things tend to build up in a "serenity now, insanity later" kind of way.

Sorry dude, I was going to post up last night before I went to the show but I ended up going straight from work. Expect you dudes would have gotten a kick out of Walter Schreifels acoustic set - only one Quicksand song and no Gorilla Biscuits or Rival Schools this time around... Fun, none the less.

Condor + Rapha = http://www.rapha.cc/index.php?page=175
You should see the Condor Rapha team bikes! They have an aero tubed Alumnum track frame and a carbon fibre pinarello-esque (swoopy molding) road frame! They're black with white and pink bands. They're made in Italy at the Dedacchi factory too so the quality should be solid! Awesome! Do any of you guys want me to bring some Rapha stuff back? They have it in stock at Condor. I'm going back to London before I come home so I could grab some stuff and mail it home.
Keith they did have a couple of larger frames at Brick Lane. They had just arrived so they weren't all catalouged/priced yet. When I'm back in London I could look into it and the cost of shipping if you want. I'll let you guys know what stuff I find in Germany/France/Italy I'm sure there will be other awesomeness to be found.
So last night I was talking to this French girl and her boyfriend (sorry it's not THAT kind of story ;)) about cycling in France. Turns out the guy works for this small custom only mountain bike company in Grenoble. They were so nice and helpful and helped me get my alp riding logistics worked out. I'm going to stay in the town of Bourg d'Oisan which is pretty much at the base of Alpe d'Huez. Apparently there is a huge roadie culture there and also the main language is Dutch! Should be good.

if the smog isnt bad enough...I had to slow myself down this morning for lack of oxygen...whats with the hordes of tiny flies? The whole way in I had to keep my helmet visor facing down and my mouth closed lest I end up with a mouth full of bugs. Is it the humidity that brings this pestilence out of the woodwork?
Hey Dan. Good times aplenty there eh fella? Rock and Roll this weekend and have a Guiness for me will ya? Let me know when you are back in London. I might be interested in a frame if the price is right. Also if you find any good straps in yer travels (Binda Laminated's or something similar) grab a pair for me. Cheers and keep the rubber side down bro!

Dude.. sounds like you're having an awesome time! I hope you brought a camera with you! I'd love to see some photos. Maybe a Danhalen Family Vacation style slideshow? ;) I've always wanted to do that after a vacation. :D Like Patty and Selma on The Simpsons. hehehe.
Also, La Bicicletta is carrying Rapha for "good" prices (http://www.labicicletta.com/edatcat/cad/tlsstore.cgi?user_action=list&category=Rapha).. eg. bib shorts direct from rapha website in ukp = £120 = $256 cdn. From La Bicicletta? $228. So, probably doesn't make sense to buy stuff there and send it back. Although they also have $195usd listed on the website, which is only $205cdn. I'm confused! :P In fact, $205 doesn't seem totally outrageous for high-end bibs. Pearl-Izumi Aerosensor Bibs are listed on the P-I website for $180usd.
edit: also, here's one of the Rapha-Condor track bikes:

where was that climb?
Along the waterfront trail near Newcastle. Coming out of the Wilmot creek valley (just east of the "private" retirement community)
That section of the trail is why we missed seeing most of the friends for life rally actually as we were heading back west on that section while everyone on the ride was heading East, to the north of us on hwy #2

Right on.. I'm gonna do a section of the Waterfront Trail this weekend. I'm going to a friend's cottage in Wellington (near Trenton/Picton). I remember that section, along the Loyalist Hwy, to be a pretty nice ride. Plus there's a nice steep climb coming out of Picton and then a nice long descent going towards the ferry (and then the other way around coming back, one would assume ;)).
wait.. those are flies? i thought it was pollen. (gags)
also: dan, knock em dead.

Awesome, sounds cool! Farthest East I've been to date is presquille/Brighton. There's a good downhill/climb going through port hope, and if you head north from presquille there's a huge climb with a rewarding view (and the roads at the top of the ridge that run east/west are really cool rollers, light traffic too :) )

Riding home along the paved Don trail Tuesday night was brutal. I was all schweaty from my mtb ride and it was just around sunset, when the flies are at their worst. I swear I gained about 3lbs in bug corpses. I'm also pretty sure they all committed suicide once they splorked onto me and stuck there due to said schweatiness... hehehe. Had to ride with my mouth closed and still sucked a few into my nostrils and had some go into my ears.
Wasn't so bad last night on my way outta there since I rode earlier. They seem to be FAR worse when the sun isn't out full force. I guess that's fly siesta time.
Also: Ran into Darkmother last night in Queen's Park.

They are aphids from the soy fields west and north of Toronto. I guess the humidity makes them swarm or something, it is gnarly.

The ones I encountered appeared to just be blackflies.. tiny little black things. I always thought aphids were green (and apparently I was correct), but oddly enough when I searched on wikipedia one of their aliases is "blackfly". I don't get it. When I say "blackfly" I mean gnats.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simuliidae. :P

either way, you got bugs in the face...
TRaffic Jammer
08-02-07, 01:56 PM
mmm protein.
To further complicate things, looking under gnats suggests it's a colloquial term for order Diptera, not Hemiptera to which aphids belong. Having tree planted, I have no such difficulty in telling black flys from aphids. Aphids suck plants, black flys suck (blood).
And you still get bugs in your face. But it's better than canker worms any day, as anyone who's lived in Winnipeg or Saskatoon can tell you.
somnambulant
08-02-07, 02:24 PM
are those the worms that totally took over Winnipeg a few years ago? I bow down to our new wormy overlords!
edit: when my old band was on tour in 2000 we stopped for an all-ages show in lovely (*cough*) Thunder Bay. They had this crazy moth thing going on. It was the creepiest thing. Once it got dark out it was something straight out of a movie about the apocalypse. :P I remember we drove past a car dealership with the big "stadium lights"... not only was there a huge swarming cloud of moths around every light, but all the cars were absolutely crawling with moths. Our drummer got a really bad case of the heebie jeebies. So, of course when one flies in the window and hits him (no air-conditioning + July = windows down) he FREAKS OUT. We pull over and he jumps out and obviously we take off and drive around the block. He was nearly in tears when we got back to him. ;)
