Rides and Races - Toronto Fixed

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Can you guys use pics from his blog entries? - link here (http://picasaweb.google.com/shiznaz) I know there are a couple of Charlie (albeit eating, etc.). My respect and thoughts for tomorrows service.
I'd like to make the ride Friday if I can (esp. as I couldn't do Sunday afterall), what's the sketch?

I'll see you all around 1:30. I'm with Keith, can't decide b/w formal or casual. I will have a cycling cap though for Charlie. Seems whenever I saw him he always had one on.

If any of you are wondering, there's O-ring bike parking on the west side of the church. I recon'ed the area this morning. Either that or lock up to the metal fence around the church. Or don't bike, in which case you suck.

It's the only good thing I can take from this. It's sad that we wait until a death to realize the value of eachother, and sad that we wait until a death to start a change. But, in the least, now he's a symbol and a motivator.
I am sad for the fact I never met him, and he was in my town for a while.

Wes, Martino has a couple up on his blog too. Can you post the edited version, I'm going to burn some off at work and stick them on the bikes and circulate it to the BUGS

I'm posting info for Friday's ride on the FGG Forum as I know several guys that post there that don't post here so I'm wondering if I can get some details? Time, place?

I've been away from BF for a bit (away for work, broken laptop) but was floored to hear the news about Charlie. I read the post in the main forum a few days ago, but haven't really written anything since I was really at a loss for words.
I only joined the Toronto Fixed thread a bit before Charlie went out west on his epic ride, so I never got to ride with him, but I can clearly see how loved he was by everyone here. I followed Charlie's blog every day with respect and awe for his accomplishments. My thoughts and sympathies go out to all of his loved ones, friends and family. I won't be able to attend the funeral today, but hope to pay my respects by joining his memorial ride on Friday.
EDIT: Can anyone comment on the pace of the memorial ride? My wife is not a strong cyclist, but was interested in attending as well.

Sometimes, a death is a catalyst for change.
I have been reflecting on Charlie's death over the past few days, and would like to make a personal pledge in his honour. Over the past month and a half, I've been forced to commute to my summer job by car, and have been irresponsible in talking on a cell phone while driving (not to mention hypocritical, as I have chastised enough of my friends and family members for doing just this). I'm not looking for any kind of absolution by posting this, but wanted to declare it publically so that I can have a personal reminder of my promise to no longer use my phone while driving.
Charlie's loss has been a humbling reminder of how powerful a weapon a car can be -- whether a driver is drunk, reckless, or just distracted, the end results can be the same. I wish that more people would remember this when they were behind the wheel -- a car is a 3000 pound weapon and should be treated with the same fear and respect as a firearm.

Also, Herb posted on iBikeTO about maybe putting a ghost bike up near Brooks as he has relatives there and will be visiting soon.

Thanks for the info on the Catlike Helmets.
I loved my Catlike helmet. Here's my advice to you: Don't let yours anywhere Dublin taxi drivers. Can you believe no one has heard of Catlike in Berlin? (I want to replace mine and will hopefully get some money from insurance. Yet another reason to hate taxi drivers.) I asked at so many fancy roadie shops and had to explain "lots of tour riders use them... their Spanish" etc. One guy said "oh yeah I think I saw a picture once". Are they common in any country anywhere in the world? Geez.

Hey everyone.. I just got an email from Sue Campbell from CBC asking me to come down and do an interviewy type thing tomorrow. While I knew Charlie I'm not sure if someone else might have known him better to do such a thing.. here's the email I got:
----------------------------------------------------
Hi Wes,
I'm a producer at CBC Radio - I've been in touch with Martin Reis who has forwarded me your email. I am wondering if you would be interested in coming in to the studio to talk about Charlie Prinsep. I'm very sorry for your loss. It's just terrible.
The show is Sounds Like Canada and the summer host is Kevin Sylvester, who's a big cyclist.
We'd like you to talk about your friend, what motivated him, what you know about the crash and what we should do about protecting cyclists, the memorial, etc. Martin is going to be a guest too.
Wondering if 12:15 pm tomorrow would work - studio at Front and John?
Please email or call me - 416-705-2902 on my cell.
Many thanks,
Sue Campbell
----------------------------------------------------
If anyone wants to volunteer, or suggest someone, let me know. But this needs to be taken care of asap. I'm totally fine doing it as well, but I just wanted to put it out there first.

how did the CBC get wind of the funeral today? it would be great for someone to speak about charlie and have his legacy cast to a wide audience.
i have to say it was a difficult day but made easier by everyone's presence. it's nice to see that much support amongst us all; you would have made charlie proud (and all looking sharp i might add).
hope you all had a good time at house on parliament.
An interesting offer. Wes, I think you'll do a good job. Kevin did a piece on cycling in Vancouver
http://www.cbc.ca/radioshows/SOUNDS_LIKE_CANADA/20070712.shtml so I doubt you'll get drawn into a bicycle helmet debate or some fool thing. The only thing I might suggest from my previous dealings with media is think of the most dumbass polarizing question you can and have a response ready to bring things back under control. I've gotten hit with a couple of those in the past.
Here's a brief bio on him http://www.cbc.ca/programguide/personality/index.jsp?personality=Sylvester%2C+Kevin&program=CBC+Radio+Sports
I spoke briefly with Thoby after the service. And being the **** I am wasn't able to say anything poignant, but he did say how much it meant to the family of the support from the biking community and how amazing it was.

I was contacted as well at a bike shop, but I only knew Charlie here on the internet and at bike shops, we never rode together socially, only by chance on Harbord once in a while & a mass or two. He did take time to help me with some questions I had about the way things work here in Canada, thanks to his study of transportation and urban planning.
All I can add about Sue & CBC is that she indicated that it would be aired immediately, hence the strict timing, perhaps live, as I'm fairly certain much of the show is, the host is live. We listen occasionally in the workshop, it's a good program.
That's good advice, keep it human, not heated even though it's a raw subject. It'll be good for people outside of cycling bubbles to know who Charlie was. I just can't believe that someone who was so obviously already part of the solution and going to be a greater part of it in the future could be lost.
