Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The headtube looks fairly steep...75ish... but that seat tube looks pretty slack.
allllright that's my kind of geometry (not that I'm considering one of these at all. Just sayin')

Well there's only one lake that I know of. Pretty much just head straight south. Can't miss it.

Thursday's no problem, I'm just going to ahve a car so it would be been easier to get them tomorrow. What's an Axle cap? is that on the quick release? If it's not, I likely don't have it. Can you order me one (assuming it's not going to cost me $8000)
The axle cap is a machined piece of aluminum that fits on the axle...between the bearing of the hub and the fork. Looks like a little cup. Kind of like a locknut except it doesnt thread on...it just slides on. I don't know if I could get one for you....I have no idea if HED has a distributor or they sell it all themselves. It wouldn't likely be more than $20...but the question is if they still stock parts for older wheelsets. Perhaps call HED direct and see if they can help you.

Is anyone planning on attending any Nuit Blanche events? I think it'd be cool if people are interested to get a bit of a rolling caravan to check out some stuff. Although, the 8-hr race is that day as well so who knows whether I'm going to be in any shape to stay up late and ride around. :P

word to the wise: the lake winter shoes fit a bit small, so keep that in mind. if you intend on using them in the bitterest cold with two layers of socks you might want to get even two sizes larger.

hmmm.. Winter shoes. Now there's an idea.
edit: I've been meaning to get a set of roadie-style booties too. Even on Sunday morning when I went for a ride I found my toes got quite cold in my road shoes.

[any other winter shoe suggestions?
I'm going to call Racer Sportif about the Northwave Celcius and the Gaerne Polars and Eskimos
My feet just hate the cold these past few years. Once cold the rides sucks large. I think it's an offshoot from having frostbitten the tootsies in the wayback past.
Thanks for the two sizes bigger tip in the Lakes.... I was hoping for superior winter construction that required no more than normal socks.... too much I guess? What is bitterest to you Zippered?

Anyone interested in coming to the Cross race on Sunday? After busting Johnny's balls about not getting me my 29er yet he is letting me use his Norco cross till I get the other rig running. PIMP! I was going to use the Mtn bike but this is a better option. How about it Wesley? Rock the Jamis! Lets go!

Sorry, the "in-laws" are in town this weekend. Trust me, there are a half dozen things I'd rather be doing. :P
edit: although, it depends on what time the race is. I assume the cat 3/4 race is around 10:00?
edit2: you might want to bug Mike about it.
I find the Lake winter shoes comfy to about -5 to -8 as long as you're actually riding. After that I go for hiking boots and platform pedals down to about -12 to -15 and then I'm with Keith on the skidoo boots for anything below that or if you're gonna be outside and not actually riding (like hanging out at the ice race, for example).

Funny you mention that but I distinctly noticed that the small decals on the chain stays were on top of the clear-coat but I didn't notice on the rest of the bike. The tubing is likely 4130 since the seat-post required (according to the eBay auction) is 26.0mm so it isn't light but not an anchor either.
I liked the lines of it and that is what caught my eye at the bike lockup; the geometry is very nice, definitely track.
I got the one about a week ago to build up as my first track bike.....all the decals do come off but you need some goo gone to get all the sticky residue off......as for the weight, i have it set up right now with a bb,headset, stem and drop bars and that came out to around 7lbs,....the one draw back is that the forks come uncut.

It is kinda nice to get the fork un-cut. Too many times I have had customers who want to change headsets and the fork doesn't have the required amount of steerer. When you do cut it do yerself a favour and toss in a couple of extra spacers.

of course; i wish someone had told me the same when i bought mine! lakes are the only winter cycling shoe i've had, so i can't speak to any others. i was hoping for the same thing as you, but it seems to be asking a bit too much. this year i'm going to wax mine, because i found after a while in a storm the water starts seeping in. and maybe some of them schmacy merino wool socks. in terms of temperatures, i agree with brad that they're great to -5/-8 , but below that you just want to get wherever you're going and get inside. however, if you know you're going to be out for a while, chemical warmers (ie. from MEC) do the trick nicely.

So I just got back from meeting Lance Armstrong! He was giving a talk for AMD, and I was lucky enough to sneak an invite with some people. I got to watch his talk and then after was lead into a back room and got to meet him.
Unfortunately the people I was with were supposed to get an hour with him before his presentation, but his flight was delayed so we didn't get very long after. Nonetheless, it was pretty cool.
Apparently he swears by Assos chamois creame, and thinks that all professional sports should have the same doping regulations, because he said cycling looks bad because it's by far the most stringent and therefore they catch the most people. the NHL looks good because they don't test.

+1 I have to run my bike with a threadless adapter and no locknut. It's like a crappy mash of threaded and threadless setup.

you beat me to it; i was about to ask that. seeing as it's on a saturday night i was planning on checking some of it out after work, around midnight or 1:00. i think that's probably an appropriate time. just say where you'd want to meet up and i'll show up reeking of garlic, salmon and sweat.

about the winter shoes: there is a guy i've ridden fixies with in the past who is very into getting the best of the best gear-wise (don't worry, he has good taste and is a talented, avid rider) and i seem to remember him speaking highly of the sidi winter boots and also i believe the northwaves. for my money, though, i'm all about full fenders, regular spds lined with plasitc bags, wool socks and maybe some toe covers.
EDIT: last winter i used the shimano spds with the lace-cover flap and they seemed warm enough most of the time. just build up enough of a fat layer that you don't feel the cold. besides, you're not in montreal anymore! we don't get winter here...

@0:09 -- why not to use track ends? :D
What's the going rate for a Krypto Evo mini around these parts / does anyone know of a good deal? I've been finding that I tend not to go places where I need to lock up (which works for not getting my bike stolen, but is annoying) since I'm not confident in my cheap/low end black "Kryptonite Keeper". Oh, and I would like something light enough that I could toss it in my bag without thinking about weight.
EDIT: I just measured and the tire clearance on my conversion is probably too big to lock wheel+frame with a mini ulock. Any alternate suggestions? Locking frame only / cable for wheels, or locking the rear wheel "sheldon style"?

That's what I always do. If I know my bike is going to be locked up for an extended period I'll often take my crypto cable and run it through the front wheel as well.

My main concern with the rear-wheel only method isn't the physical security of it (as I know how hard it is to cut metal under compression).. it's the mentality of the crackhead bike thief that I find a bit dubious. If someone in an "altered state" sees only the wheel locked, they might think it's insecure and wreck the bike trying to steal it..

re: the Sheldon method. I had a bike stolen a whole bunch of years ago. I friend found it locked up on the street at Huron and Dupont. He put his own lock on it...left a note for the ****** that basically said the owner of the 22' mtn bike is on his way to retrieve it...and came and got me. We headed back up and whe we got there the afforementioned ****** had un-locked the bike but put his lock around the back rim/tire. Not content with allowing this assclown to get my back wheel (old Campy Euclid hub on a Bontager custom ma-40) I strolled down the block to the Stevensons rent-all...borrowed a hack-saw...and sliced through the tire/rim/tube in about 30 secs. once cut it didn't take much to spread the rim apart enuf to pull the lock out. Moral of the story is this method is not really all that secure. Use the good lock to lock your frame always...use a secondary cable if need be.

Exustars seem to be a pretty good bang for the buck from what I've seen. An even better bang for the buck was last year when they were clearing out the "old" winter shoes, AKA the $250 Lake winter shoes for $50!
