Somna, remember the last photo from this set when it comes time for us to put our little fundraising effort together - I really like that one. How big is the original file?

Anyone good with teh php + mysql? I am alas, teh sux0r. Please shout me a holla if you can be of assistance.

It was only taken with my old 2MP point & shoot, so it's 1600x1200 @ 180dpi. So, not very big. And it was also taken at I think the highest iso the camera does. But I think the dirtiness / grain works for these images.. I wish it was film grain though. :)

And php + mysql are my weapons of choice. email or pm me.

From this month's cyclometer email:

4. From Scorchers to Alley Cat Scrambles coming to the Market Gallery

From Scorchers to Alley Cat Scrambles: the amazing history of the bicycle in Toronto tells the story of the revolutionary changes to transportation in the city and how the bicycle contributed to improving our roads, liberating women and modernizing consumerism, tourism and professional sport.

The exhibit, which runs from May 20 - October 1, will feature items from the collections of the City of Toronto Culture Division, Museum & Heritage Services and the Toronto exceptional collection of historic bicycles, posters, memorabilia and ephemera. Mr. Shields, a collector for over 50 years, has donated much of his collection to the National Museum of Science and Technology in Ottawa. This exhibit is the first time that items of this scale and quality have been gathered together into an exhibit.

The Market Gallery, in partnership with the Community Bicycle Network, presents the fascinating history of the bicycle in Toronto from "scorchers" the pioneering daredevils of the 1800s to the illegal late-night "alley cat" races of today's bicycle messengers. Featuring personal histories, compelling stories and beautiful old bicycles, From Scorchers to Alley Cat Scrambles chronicles how the bicycle has influenced the social, political and economic life of Toronto residents since 1869.

Word to The Rock (not the person)

Double Word to the Toronto Bike Police that let me off with a smile and a 'be careful' after totally burning me torching 2 consecutive red lights. (Yonge and Victoria on Queen) 150 buckos per and 3 points each.
They were able to catch you on their 50lb mountain bikes? For shame. :D

keith, what was the impetus for dunhill to hook up with the alleycat scramble in the first place? there's got to be more private sector sponsors that share the same marketing visions that they had.. and it doesn't have to be alcohol or tabacco. ..athletic shoe companies??? if anything ss/fixed gear is more popular now than it was in the early 90s. kinda off topic: for some reason, i've always remembered joe dias' pic in the "my style" section of now magazine way back when.
Dunhill was just interested in the "sub-culture" event to flog their product. They had a decent share of the smokes market in B.C. but wasn't doing well in the Ontario market. I don't know if their Ontario market share went up after this.....I would guess not. I don't know exactly how Dunhill got involved although I would guess that a rep for them gets his coffee's from Jetfuel. I always thought of the H.P.R. as a perfect addition to the X-Games. Thrills....spills...young sexy folks in lycra...how could you go wrong. Very spectator friendly as well. Squid in N.Y.C has been trying to get one going there. With the kind of hook-ups they have with Puma you would think it would be fairly easy. 2 years and counting...nothing yet. Kind of gives you an idea of the barriers involved. When I win the lottery *crosses fingers* we will have a velodrome to ride here in T.O. Until some rich guy that LOVES track cycling gets involved, I don't see one here in the foreseeable future.

One of them crossed my path and it occurred to me for about an instant to bolt but the bad karma involved doing that was too great. We were actually chuckling about it..... "I'm staying in front of the cars" "OK but stop for the lights....please" I was nice, they were nice, it was nice, and yes I will be more careful. :)

The officer told me I am allowed to take the lane. yay. I didn't ask him if, as a civie, he'd ever tried to take the lane in DT Toronto.

Cavern I'm sooo down with the velodrome after the lottery win.

So here's my idea. All the forumites in the Toronto thread donate 2 bucks a week. We pool the $$ and buy Lotto 6/49 tickets (otherwise known as stupidity tax) When we win (of course such a noble cause would have to win) we can erect the "Bikeforums Single Speed and Fixed Gear Toronto Thread Memorial Velodrome" otherwise known as the B.F.S.S.F.G.T.T.M.V. what choo think?

[QUOTE=jeremywhitehorn][QUOTE=somnambulant]*cough* The newfies managed to bring home a medal *cough*

True dat. But the fact that most people do it while drinking and it's still an olympic sport isn't a negative thing, is it? But either way, I was born 'n raised in St. John's, so I had to get that in there. :D

yeah, i was kidding.

i thought it was amazing the amount of support that newfoundland gave to the curling team (shutting down schools so everyone could watch the gold medal match); it's great that they were so proud of their athletes.

as for a sport you can play with a drink in your hand: is there any other kind?

we don't need to win the lottery to do that, we get enough forum lurkers chipping in their toonies and we can throw down in honest eds parking lot once the weather is warm enough. if we don't have enough for a keg we can just have a big dice game.

yeah, i was suprised to see them after i forked out the $100 for the nittos. i mean they're probably not heat treated or machined for barend shifters or anything special but heck, for a street fixed they look perfect.

they also have some soma track bars that i'm eyeing. have to sell the ill-fitting track bars i have already though...

and they don't even match the stem, they should be silver. looks like they should be flipped over and ridden like bullhorns.

it's expensive, but for a custom frame of that caliber i wouldn't say its over priced.

on the subject of spoken word. if you've never been the the Scream in High Park i recommend going. i took poetry in university so sort of had a background in poetry and performance art, but i always bring someone along who knows nothing of it and they usually end up hating about 90% of it becuase it's so out there, performance wise ("sound poetry" for example), but there is always something that connects with them (and me) and you always experience something new you can't see anywhere else, or didn't think you'd like. yay performance poetry!

Hey, can anyone post up the name of the powder-coater that isn't Spectrum? It is Bryters or something, I searched the thread for it but nothing came up and re-reading ain't going to work either cuz this thread is now at 150 pages! Jeez, this is a big thread!

I was thinking of painting my new (old) track frame this way. Any idea what kind of prep is required? I can strip the old paint myself, but do I need to get someone to sand blast it?
