:p yet again I am too damned slow.
It would seem the quick and easy exchange period is over.
Going over a bit of the legalese documents on the settlement site it's looking like a hassle factor of 10.
That's what I get for not paying attention to things:rolleyes: , hmmmmm a new lock. Shoes first.
I'm in town for the weekend I might go checkout the track with the kids.
Speaking of pasting peds. Do you find your "GGGGaahhhh!" riding options are more limited by being fixed? This is the type of situation that freaks me out when I think of running fixed on the street.

You're pretty much screwed ... for a few reasons:
- You have to hold an existing insurance policy on your bike (Kryptonite pays above and beyond the deductable)
- You have to get your bike appraised and send in that paperwork (+ lock receipt) within 15 days of purchasing the lock.
- There was the whole lock-exchange thing that went on for a year or so. I'm guessing part of that process involved voiding any guarantee w/ the older style of lock.
Also (vaguely related), I have a question about the Kryptonite guarantee fine print that I found confusing. It states that you need to have pre-existing insurance coverage for your bike. Buuut ... if your bike was already insured (ie. home owners insurance, etc.) why would you need the extra Krypto insurance? I've never had actual insurance, but could you save some cash by insuring your bike for $500 ($250 deductable or something) even when it's been appraised at $1000 (and have Kryptonite's policy cover the rest)? Either that, or the whole guarantee thing seems completely redundant. *shrug*
i'm inclined to say it's redundant. if you read further into the fine printo there are some stipulations for non-US residents. From what i remember reading, they pretty much just cover your deductible and perhaps a replacement lock. if you have either home or renter's insurance your bike should be included in that because it's part of the contents of your home. i don't know of an insurance company that has special riders for bikes. if you have something crazy expensive you can ask them to add it to your policy. i don't see the use of the kryptonite insurance as anything other than a selling feature for the lock.

Regular home insurance can be hit or miss for bikes after you consider the deductible and the potential increase in rates after you make a claim. If you've got an expensive bike, as per Jeremy's comments, get it added as a special.

Crappy, I didn't know they changed the replacement policy. Anyway, try your lock with a pen, some are impossible to open that way. It depends on the arrangement of the tumbers in your lock, and the diameter of the cylinder. One of my U locks was really easy to open with a pen, the other two were impossible.

quick question..... years ago when I bought my monster Krypto lock it came with a 2500$ guarantee.
NOw that it could be possible to open it with a 5cent bic pen does the guarantee still hold? I see the new ones have the flat key.
The krypto guarntee specifically does not cover the lock being picked.

Haha! No dice, it just hailed in good ole R.H.
Edit: Krypto guarantee wise, I think it's pretty useless. The specific circumstances in which you can put a claim on the guarantee is extremely limited.

The guarantee on this product is null and void if someone actually manages to open the lock with anything other than the key. It is also null and void if someone uses a grinder to cut it off. BUT if they use a hacksaw from home depot, we GUARANTEE the security of our product.

THE KRYPTO LOCK
Ok..if you are having trouble let me know and I will call them about exchanging that thing. In the very least they might just send you a shackle.
I had to go through some crap with them on a brand new flat key lock I sold.. thing just failed, key stuck in the cylinder etc..
I still have that lock to send back actually. Worst case is they might want u to pay shipping, some of there locks just needed a new shackle, some I guess u end up with a new lock.. let me know. Bit of hassle but im sure I can expedit it for u.

Well I've had it for years ....ages in fact. I need to see if I can pop it open with a pen. then I'll just get a new lock.

I used to have a non-Kryptonite U-lock and I opened it with a pen but it completely screwed up the tumblers in the locking mechanism, so I had to get a new lock anyway...
Beware if your lock has a round keyhole, it can most likely be opened with a pen, even if it's not a Kryptonite lock.

I'm a gatherin' parts for the latest build. There are some choice items at Ben's Cycle, but I've never ordered from them before. Has anyone dealt with them/him?

04-13-06, 08:32 PM
Yep, I've delt with them. The service was fine, stuff was packed well enough (crumpled up newspaper but it was all secure) and there were no horrible waits for the package. Check the prices on eBay vs. their actual website - I noticed some variations.e
What are you looking for?
Oh! I think I've got damn near everything for my spring build finally:
- 55cm Pake frame
- 1" threadless Surly Steamroller fork
- FSA Duron X threadless headset
- Nitto RB021 38cm bullhorns
- Tektro dual pivot brake from the used pile at work
- Paul CX brake lever
- Formula/Mavic CXP33 32h wheelset
- Surly 17t cog and lockring
- KMC K710 chain
- Sugino 75 crankset
- Sugino 75 bottom bracket
- Salsa 48t chainring
- ooold Selle San Marco Rolls
- Suntour Cyclone + straps/Crank Bros. Candy SL
Still to aquire:
- White Industries Dos Eno 16/18 freewheel
- either a 26.8 or 27.0 seatpost (gotta measure the frame to make sure)
- threadless stem
Both of those last two items will hopefully be found in a pile somewhere at work ...
The dropouts on the Pake are pretty long, so hopefully my 3-speed fixed/free plan will actually work. The only problem is that my "demon hill" gear is going to leave me with the shortest effective chainstays. Blah.

That sounds good Eye. I was looking at the Nitto B-123 bars and one of the Formula/Alex wheelsets, haven't decided which one yet. I don't know that I could get the wheels for cheaper even if I laced them myself while still doing the 1.5 times mark up for shipping, exchange, and other gouging.
Your build sounds fierce. Love those Pake frames.
I'm not as far along. So far it's a Zeus track frame NOS and generic headset. My bike dungeon has coughed up a Sakae stem, Selle Italia, Christophe toe clips and straps, Lyotard pedals (Frenchies) doing a good imitation of track ones, and a BMX chain.

http://www.thebikebiz.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=nit%2Dpb21 ... but they're not out of stock until May (so says their website). If you order from there, make a point of requesting they ship USPS to you. SOP w/ those guys is UPS which who charge you out the wazoo for bringing a package across the border.
Nice guys overall and they've got a good supplier for track components that you don't see frequently (Merry Sales out of California, specifically). If you're looking for any esoteric parts that you can't track down otherwise it might be worth the effort to just email them and see what they can do.

Okay, I have a million and a half bike ideas on the go at any given time but a GT Pulse on the list:
- grass track/path racer (Brooks saddle, Major Taylor bars, 36/36 box rims, cyclocross tires ... mmm)
- 2007 Lemond Poprad frameset + 105 goodness (42x11-28 perhaps)
- On-One Inbred 29er singlespeed (disc brakes and a rigid fork)
- GT Pulse new school track goodness
- eyefloater
PS. Why a 2007? ... don't want mine to match T.J.'s ... ;)
Edit: Got my coherence on.

I took my cyclops for a ride today with a higher seat, a road stem, bullhorn bars, and my eggbeaters and the ride was so much better. You can put some serious speed into that thing and it just keeps wanting more. I guess I'll just take out the NJS gear on special occasions.
After riding my 43x17 fuji touring bike all winter I'm so not used to a 49x15 track pursuit bike. I can really feel the burn in my quads when I'm surging; with my winter bike I was spinning so much I could never get to that stage. I should start doing interval training or something.
Come to think of it, anyone want to start doing some resonably regular and directed training rides/sessions this summer? it would be good to keep up a schedule.. I'm also planning on starting to do climbing again as its super fun and works out all the parts of your body the bike forgets.

Rocks in general frighten me. They're so ... jutty.
I'd be up for some rides, although weekends are best for me as I already do 35 k a day minimum. I'm not sure I need another outdoorish hobby like rock climbing. Apart from my antipathy to heights, I need to get back in my boats this summer.
Shiz, whatever you had today must have been passed on to me. I got pulled over by the fuzz for blowing a red (got a prolonged lecture rather than a ticket, luckily), almost run over in a parking lot, and just about smoked another cyclist while I was passing them as they made a lazy slide over a lane of traffic to stop.
