Now kids... If you're going to behave like this, it's the last time I won't not drink with you.

Don't forget about the CBN bike swap Sunday morning. I volunteered for the first slot helping to set up so I can scoop the goods, nyah hah hah.

Other than that, an odd day riding. Some goombah on a mountain bike drafted me from O'Connor down to the Danforth. I wish people would learn to share the lead. I thought my chain was about to fall off until I noticed him behind me. I was then waiting to turn left onto Dundas and some woman turning left yelled at me. Hey! You were speeding! That's great.

Almost the weekend.

For those of you who've been to the bike swap before, what kind of goods can I expect? Decently priced frames or completes? I ask because I'll be there with a few friends who are looking for bikes, not just components and accessories.

been at work past 10pm every day this week, I'm looking to ride eveings again though next week? CV? works best when it's mentioned a day in advance or so too...

oh and there was another bike fatality sadly... somewhere up on a Steeles a women was hit... just saw it on the 11 o'clock news.
lots of people pulling out they're bikes for the first time this year... what a difference riding all winter vs. seasonlly makes on your traffic awareness...[I think]. I'm seeing lots of riders out (which is good).... seeing lots of stupid cyclist moves in traffic too (bad)

And why oh why is it the same day as the MEC gear swap. My only hope is that it starts before 11 and I can send my dad to line up for the MEC swap.

The bike swap is actually happening in the MEC parking garage, so you'll be set.

Edit: keep safe out there, folks.

Sounds like the 1st guy got the right hook from a truck. I wonder if there are ever any charges laid in these types of cases?

Tangent: What is it with nice weather that makes the drivers in this city go nuts? I've seen more reckless lane changes in the last few days than I usually do in a month. Fridays only make things worse....be carefull out there guys.

The first cyclist was apparently a courier so knowing Toronto the cops will assume that it was the courier's fault and continue as normal. The crash involving the 16 year old girl seems to have inspired an investigation by the police so there are more likely to be charges laid there.

Anyone know the courier who bought the farm? Or if there is a memorial planned?

Nice weather = no ice = rush home early to watch television or whatever it is cagers do when they get to where they're going in such a rush.

This is the first Community Bicyle Network swap meet (I think) so not sure what it will be like. I'm cleaning out the parts bin and getting rid of some larger stuff like a trainer but no whole bikes for me. I suspect that there may be quite a few beaters there. CBN gets a whack of stuff in donations etc. so this may be a way for them to redistribute them.

Nothing on ARC's site as yet regarding a memorial.

There are SELDOM any charges laid agaist the drivers and if they are any the fines are small and charges are nothing just your basic kill a cycelist and get away with it, don't belive me then check with people at ARC http://www.respect.to/wiki/ And below is from Matrino bike lane Blog more proof ... Driver who hit cyclist loses licence

CBC News
A 62-year-old motorist from Victoria who ran over a cyclist has lost his right to drive for a year after being found guilty of dangerous driving.

Robert Fayle was accused of deliberately swerving into Darwyn Rowland on a semi-rural road in Saanich a year and a half ago.

He was originally charged with assault with a weapon and dangerous driving, but the judge found him not guilty of assault.

Fayle was given an 18-month conditional sentence. ordered to perform 80 hours of community service and had his driver's licence suspended for a year.

The court was told that Fayle was arguing with two other cyclists just before the incident.

Rowland suffered a collapsed lung and ankle injury, and had to have shoulder surgery.

I was 25 when I went back to school in the early 90's. I think it made me a better student. Before then there was no waaaay I was sittin' still for classes and papers. A very close brush with death á la cager made me decide it was time to get off the road and get my butt to school.

Douchiness knows no age limits. Having been a mature student myself (cough, cough), I've found the best way to alienate others is to assume you know everything by virtue of your time on earth and they know nothing because of same, and then you let them know it. I've had no problems myself, but there was one guy in our class (nicknamed Sven or Svencter) who knew everything about everything. As the oldest guy in the class, he had little in common with the others so it was pretty easy to get socially ostracized anyway. His douchiness just made it more of a public service. Mind you, he was an engineer too (sorry darkmother).

Motivation and a better sense of direction helps immensely as a mature student. Be cool, be yourself, don't struggle to fit in and keep your eyes peeled for undergrads with a daddy fetish.

No offense taken. No one likes an engineer...even I don't. Always telling you things. And in a classroom full of them, there's always at least one extra annoying, hairlipped SOB that won't shut up.

Anyway, I started university in my mid twenties, and I had a good time. But I'm immature for my age:)

Mind you, he was an engineer too (sorry darkmother).

Motivation and a better sense of direction helps immensely as a mature student. Be cool, be yourself, don't struggle to fit in and keep your eyes peeled for undergrads with a daddy fetish.

you pretty much hit the nail on the head there. i must say that a good deal of my impressions of mature students were thus: trying to form a bond with the prof/TA based on the proximity in age, arrogance when talking to the "kids". anyway, lucky for me i've been to university already and i'm headed to college, where there seems to be less of that.
another word of advice to mature students: don't show up in a tweed coat smoking a meerchaum saying "you think that's old? i remember when....".

nice call on the daddy fetish, that had me laughing at work. i guess it's sage advice, better than a girl with mother issues anyway...

shiznaz:

is the fork on your fuji bent? I just saw these pics in the photo thread, the bottom of the fork looks like it's totally bent to the right (pretty collection of bikes by the way)

That fork is totally bent...... the wheel has been mounted crooked I think to compensate. See how it sits in the fork? As long as it tracks in the same direction as the back wheel, it's ridable. I wouldn't take my hands off the bars too too quick though, (might be just me).

How does the bike swap work? Can I actually bring in old stuff that I cannot use and swap it for other old stuff that I can use? Or is everything priced out? I am hoping the rain keeps people away, I want the deals for myself ;)

AS for school .... I'm a big believer in taking some time off after high school. The idea that one goes all the way through school without experiencing life is madness. Live a bit find your passion then go from there.

There's this one guy who shows up to all the computer science and engineering classes. No one likes him because all he does is ask "questions" which aren't really questions, they serve only to demonstrate that he knows all the material already.

He is also not a student but attends all our classes. In the end we got pissed and emailed the instructor and got him kicked out of one of our CS classes but he still goes to all the engineering ones.

Makes one wonder how he can afford to pretend to attend class all day and not actually have to go to work. Sad.

yeah, a bit disrespectufull to be taking up all the instructor's time if you guys are all paying to be thre and he isn't. it's bad enough if he were paying tuition.

Yes, the old comment versus question. Here's two possible solutions:

a) Have someone ask "What's your point?" after he responds. Keep asking.
b) Get a group of the class to laugh uproariously after each "question". Congratulate him after class on being so hilarious. Don't engage him in conversation. He'll either leave or come to class with a shotgun.
