The comedy of errors that is my bike mechanic-ery continues...

While tightening the nut on my rear hub axle (the nut that goes on the axle securing it to the outside of the track end) I heard a snapping noise come from the general area. I have to check when I get home but I might have stripped the threads on the axle, which would be surprising since I didn't tighten anywhere near what the shop did.

My combination of not being mechanically inclined but still insisting on doing my own maintenance is translating well over to the fixed gear world, haha

Beans and wieners, but depending on how many ppl. Cans of beans are heavy. Potato Flakes are flammable just so you have been warned. I love the smell of burning potatoes in the morning.. Canadian Infantry rations are the best food for being in the field bar none.

The snapping sound is never good.

Cous-cous! So easy and so delicious. Just came back from a camping trip to Killarney. If any of you ever go there, stay at site H1 for at least one night. Amazing jumping rocks and a beautiful clear lake for swimming.

Yeah I'm gonna have to take a look at the threads tonight. I was planning on learning hub disassembly anyway ;)

Check the tail end of this post (http://makergo.com/shutup/?p=243) - if that's the problem it's easily rectified but you'll need a new part.

You guys continue to be incredibly helpful. I'll have to take a look tonight but I suspect that may be it. The threads sure didn't feel stripped and I wasn't cranking that hard. I might ride down to urbane and grab the part before I go home and hope that's the problem rather than get to my place take the bike apart and not have time to get to urbane before closing.

is this the axle that's crackin'? I have a set of IRO I haven't built yet, and a head's up on delicate aspects of the hub would be good to know data.

The bugs are extremely tolerable. I didn't use bug spray for the whole trip. Got a few bites, but not enough to warrant the evil that is DEET. This is especially impressive because I'm usually the person that gets 10 bites while no one else has any. Perfect time of year to go camping.

Er... bikes!

No it looks like a spacer type thing that goes on the inside of the dropout/track end. Basically on the outside you have your track nut, and on the inside you have this stupid thing with the toothed/ridged side facing against the dropout to keep the axle in place.

Not sure there's much you can look out for though. I was tightening the axle and it just cracked (assuming this is in fact what broke, which in all likelihood it sounds to be).

Hey Matt, went to urbane and picked up the part (asked for as "that thing that goes inside the dropout and breaks alot" which was enough for them to get it...) came home and sure enough that's exactly what it was. Replaced the part, reassembled my bike and no snapping noises this time around. Thanks a lot dude, appreciate the insight.

so far in denmark, other than the family bikes, the best thing i've seen is the amount of people running lights with magnetic dynamos. no need for batteries, or your tire being molested by a traditional dynamo.

how are these not more popular everywhere?

Agreed. I just ordered some gloves from them and I think, as was discussed earlier in this board, the students are at the customs again and they nailed me on $15 in items for like $7 (not terrible but very rare).

You may want to either wait until Sept and even then order one tyre at a time so you lessen the chance of paying duty.

Hey tuz, I just noticed now that you have an Alycon CX bike-----is it hanging in the Cherry Bomb coffee shop on Roncesvalles?

Whether it is or not, it is the nicest looking CX bike I have ever seen. I love the old-skool lugged steel with the new components and I want one. Some of the old Pinarellos CX bikes are really nice too...

i saw similar ones on a guys comfort bike a few weeks ago, the ones they carry in cyclesolutions... pretty shaite, they are weak as ass and blink only when the magnet is physically moving past them.

but, geeking the magnets to charge a small battery and hooking it up to a decent lamp would be pimpage.

If you put several magnets it would work alright.

What type of cup? cone and cup...shimano...external?

kergin
08-19-08, 06:18 PM
sometimes i like to use the chainstay for some leverage when removing cups. not all BB tools or designs will allow for this, but when they do, that trick usually works.

reminds me - today the mech at labicicletta hooked me up with a free dustcap removal tool and shimano brand external bb wrench. when i asked how much, he says, "just put it in your bag..." LULZ!

apparently, the new external bb cranks start to exhibit clicks when there's any dirt on the spindle... which is odd, cause clicking usually means dead/dying bb with splined/square taper systems.

keith - how's the shimano chain breaker tool? It was a toss up between the park and this shimano and I snagged the shimano on recommendation.

^^ LOL, I am so going to go pick up some tools from there ;)

Aside from total-body hangover fatigue, gorgeous don ride today. I ran it in full gear to see what its like and it rocks, raceface pads, MEC camelbak with my essential tools in it, the bern helmet and my new yellow glasses. Little bit hot at first running fully padded, but once everything is soaked with sweat it breathes pretty well for some reason. plus, the shinnies saved me today on a nasty bit of stump, worth every penny already.

K, the bike is running perfectly, I fine-tuned the tension and it didnt complain at all. I will need new bars as I have been noticing a few dents and dings that arent very healthy, however the rest is pretty indestructible. thx for the brakes/grips, excellent combination, and very comfortable :thumb:

Hey Jet. It's not. They have those Mariposa paintings there as well is that right? I have to check the place. Anyway I got mine recently. It's actually an old 50's bike that was retro-fitted for CX use by bike specialities. Nervex lugs and TA crank, 1x7sp, very pretty :) I loooove lugged bikes.

Nice. Yeah, Cherry Bomb has some sort of partnership with Bicycle Specialities and they hang neat old bikes on the wall, switching them out every month or so. Last month was a sweet Schwinn Apple Kart and now it is this crazy-wicked Alycon CX bike. I took a photo once of this, a Mariposa touring bike that looked pretty sweet to me:

i saw similar ones on a guys comfort bike a few weeks ago, the ones they carry in cyclesolutions... pretty shaite, they are weak as ass and blink only when the magnet is physically moving past them.

but, geeking the magnets to charge a small battery and hooking it up to a decent lamp would be pimpage.

they have 3 models

one that only blinks when the magnet passes
one that has a capacitor and stores energy, blinking 2x per second
one that is a constant light

you can buy extra magnets to add to all 3

my friend had the one without the capacitor on his bike, even spinning it by hand
it was much, much brighter than my MEC turtle that i had in my bag.

It's been awhile since I last visited...

I got hit by a car last night. I'm fine, but my Makino has seen better days...

Do you think Malcolm or someone other frame builder can repair the damage?
