I suggest a 60 minute cook off based on a secret ingredient! The tasting panel will decide the victor! The vanquished will commit seppuku!
Only if you have dull unsanitary katanas.

i meant to say: based on the fact that the last toronto alley cat attracted 6 people, perhaps a sprint or time trial event would generate more interest than a traditional alley cat? at least in terms of bringing non-messengers out to race. i don't want to be disrespectful to the messenger community in terms of stepping on anyone's toes, race-wise, but my initial thought is anyone should be free to organise a race where all are welcome.
to answer your question i think an evening thing would me more appropriate. perhaps have the starting heats/timed riders going off about an hour before the sun sets then finishing up in the dark (bring your lights)? leaves enough time for a few beers and a trackstand comp.
Lets do it up. Perhaps a trial run is in order. Wouldn't take long at all to organize. Do one maybe mid-May. If it works out well we can organize another one later to be part of the series. I can take care of the prize end. Just figure out a date and get a flyer happening. Who wants to nominate themselves for the flyer/artwork end? A thankless job with no recompense...JACKPOT!! I can draw stick figures if no-one wants it:D

We could do a broader invitational to folks on BF. Just curious about the last alley-cat. Is the turnout for that typical? Or is it just "big ticket" events that draw?

I've been wanting.... once I become an eccentric billionaire, to find the world's fastest messers. Train 'em in classical road racing then place the team in the pro ranks and see what happens. Team Chaos in TDF....woooohooooo parting til 2....keepin' all the other teams awake all night. Raising hell, pro cylcing needs a team like that. Full on black everything.....lol.
you mean like these guys (http://www.evilcycling.com/hope_through_hatred.htm)?
from what i understand a lot of euro messengers are in fact semi-pro racers in training, supplimenting their racing income with messenger work. i remember hearing that in the last CMWC in NYC, a few of the americans were pointing out the fact that they didn't like racing some of the europeans becuase they were essentially pro althletes who were ringers in the race. i guess that's why so many of those races includ mandatory alcohol consumption, sort of levels the playing field.

Same in MTL back in the day....loads of racers trained as messers, it's a perfect fit.
I liked the photoshopping of the EVil logo on the streets of Paris.

That bridge can be sketchy. What's the light situation like down there at night? I hate hitting cracks and holes in the dark.
There have been known to have the occasional street race down there, as well as the Docks traffic. That said I'm game...... damn need a machine.
The Bridge is fine it is the gravel that is sketchy on either end of the bridge that's fun

I used to stand up like that on a rolling road bike, without the seatgrab. I'm dyin' for my flip/flop fixie now. Operator, having gotten my own computer piece of paper years ago, I can sympathize. It's not one of your sexier occupations.
As long as you hit the gravel straight on you're ok. Opps I'm forgetting about teeny tiny road tires.
I could never wear a jersey that reads "skilled", as I'd have to be.
I could maybe look at some flyer design or possibly help with creation of elements.... all bikes welcome?
When is it needed?

It's just that it will affect the design if it's a fixie meet as opposed to open classes.

Do that and there'll be one guy w/ the God Ratio whose pedal strokes line up perfectly to alleviate pedal strikes on any of the turns. Then there'll be me - broken collarbone in the first 10 feet. ;)
Edit: Ah, but I'm thinking equally-spaced cones/flags/etc. **** it, make people slalom angry dogs/winos. That'd be some good **** to watch.

Who'se good at organizing that sorta competition.... can't burn out folks too too quickly, and we need to make sure final riders are equally rested, or tired.

Seconded. We can have some other side events ie: trackstand.....but head to head keeps it easy. Singlespeeds can race but they have to take their brakes off?

Race format is not too hard....I have done ton's of em. Hard to carve anything in stone until we have firm numbers. Depending on such we might have to do 3 or 4 up format with loser's going into a repechage. Heats should be in multiples of 4....keeps it easy. So if we get 20 racers you have 10 heats of 2...winners move on. Then ideally 2 repechage heats....with the winners of those moving on. 12 winners into semi's.....3 up heat's times 4... winner's move on. Quarters....2 up heat's times 2. Final's etc.....but know I am rambling. You get the gist.

i think it would be interesting to do one whole loop of unwin/commisioners, etc with about 4-6 racers in each heat, top two advance. that way it's not a full out sprint, you lose sight of the racers yes but you can at least see them finish down a long straight.
say you have 20 racers, with heats of four each if two advanced in each heat then even the winner would only be doing the course 4 times.
i dunno, now we're getting ahead of ourselves.

I just picked up an Under-The-Weather bag from the Bike Joint, and I just want to give Sam some huge props for great customer service. I was going to buy a bag off the site, but I decided to email first about shipping and handling since I could just pick it up from some place in Toronto. Sam replied to my emails promptly and had the bag to a bike store within blocks of my house within 2 days. Like veteran_youth, UTW is a peach. A big juicy peach.
P.S. this bag is awesome.

You ruined almost all bags for me after your "truck tarp liner isn't sandwiched between layers of cordura" comment. I wonder if UTW or PTE would do that as a custom option ... pseudo X-Strap would also be nice.

Better a bag ***** than a crack *****. I love a good bag. I am also a bag snob. Most folks will not have too many issues with any good mess bag. If you are actually messing with it some are certainly better than others. I LOVE my PAC...but we have been together for many years now. I also love UTW....but in more of a "friend" way.
