Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Icing on the cake for slicing my leg open: the big, pasty-white rectangle around the cut caused by having that area shaved in order to Dermabond/tape it shut. :P

Who thinks Wes should shave then? Come on Racer Man!
brazil nut thighs for wes?
anyone with a mess bag though? i know i could use my backpack, but i think my character would go for the faster option. OMG filming starts next week!
Mines extra stinky and i use it every day pretty much, otherwise I'd loan it to you. Try PMng Sam or calling under the weather. Maybe they have a demo/second or something they could loan you.

Okay so Thurs might be out for me. Seems I am once again an employee (they truely are desperate)of the Toronto School Bored, educating young minds and forming the future leaders of our country. Or, to be more honest, keeping the little darlings from stealing your bikes. Yes I am back in the saddle as a teacher as of Friday. Nice school of 200 students, lots of safe school kids (gang kids there for their or others safety) MID, DD, autistic, ODD etc. and so on. The 'problem/slow' kids as they would have been know as when us old people were in school. Going to be a fun commute to Jane and Eglington everyday. Right now it's going to be Bloor to church/Davenport, across to St. Clair, up Weston to Eg and Jane and then into the flats. About 16-17km.

I don't mean this as a joke, but with the 'safe school kids', do you have to restrict access to knives and the like?

yeah i'll need it for a little while, so i wouldn't want you to go without. thanks for the suggestion of UtW: i'll try that if i can't get my greasy hands on my ex's that i used to use.
oh and i would have stopped when i saw you the other day, but i had been hanging out there for a few minutes and needed to get riding to warm up. if there's room for one more tomorrow maybe i'll come by, unless things are getting started really late?

Yes and no. I make sure I know how many are there at the start of each class, and then make sure I get that many returned to me. Usually I hand them out to whomever needs them. If one is missing no one is allowed to leave and the hall moniter is called in. Last year I never had any issues, the only concern was the kids who made shivs out of pens and thumbtacks.
I actually like working with these kids. They can be a real pain in the ass and be a big emational drain, but the rewards are great and no too sound too after school specially, making a difference to even one of them makes it worth while. And considering I was at 1 of the 3 worst schools in T.O. last year, it won't be too big a worry this year. But I do keep my bike locked to my desk.

Zippered: Please don't play the role of a messenger with a sparkly, shiny new bag. You *want* a smelly, old, beatup, used one! :) Unfortunately I don't have one to loan... especially not one that fits that aesthetic. :)

Pyze-guys' doing the good work. ^^Wes is right^^ You need an old thrashed patched bag with things hangin' off it. Don't forget the clip for your waybills, and the duct tape reinforced phone/radio holder on the shoulder strap so it's right next to your mouth so you can talk/ride.

More and more things are starting to die on my urbanite.. it's getting harder not to try and justify a new commuter purchase/build. Front hub is super pitted, headset needs to be replaced, seatpost is seized in the frame, etc.
Considering a 650b build.. :S

totally! that's why i'd rather borrow someone's rather than a demo. even though i just got myself a new mini kryptonite for quick lock-ups i'm going to use my well-worn new york lock from 2001.
good point on the clip, tj, i hadn't thought of that. i was *really* hoping to have a (duct tape reinforced lol) radio-on-my-strap too, but i don't know if that's going to be feasible.
originally the script called for me to remove a quick-release saddle to use as a weapon, but i told the director/writer there was no way that wouldn't be locked down in real life.
technically someone just needs a bike to be a courier and it's just a stereotype that makes people think messengers have one "aethestic", but if my name is going on this thing i want it done right!

Weight? Why not just score an old aluminum ski pole from the Double V Boutique?

i went for a ride today for about 30min looking through thrift stores and similar places, couldn't find one. so i think im going to create one out of a hockey stick for the time being.
weight isnt too much of a concern for me... yet... i figure i need a stronger wrist for polo, and the best way to get it would be to use a heavy mallet.
that and i love using me dremel on wood

thanks FF, but i'm going to try the push one first. sucks about your shoulder though, heal fast!
TJ: those things are awesome, but i've never had the need to upgrade to one from a basic 'beener. he's still looking for people to be involved, if you're interested/have time?
no worries i was in my own little world and had a delayed reaction too, cam... perhaps i'll have some energy tomorrow night (7am start on thursdays) to make up for it! mind sending me the info?
ps. i feel like i should 'fess up and say that my first time on the interior don trails made me cry like a baby and almost throw my bike off a ridge. mind you it was also the first time that bike had been ridable in a year, and a busy (hormonal) weekend afternoon, so the river trail afterwards seemed like a breeze. still, i really am a big ***** when it comes to mountain biking :(

You know that thing people do when they start working out and they go way overboard the first time because they want to get much more fit quickly and then end up just ****ing themselves up and hobbling around for days/weeks after? Ya, don't do that with building up your wrist strength ... it's not exactly the most solid part on your body.

ha ha thanks for asking because i was wondering too!
seems like i got a bit of a discussion going... but really, i'm sure some of you will be in the audience and i know what tough critics we all are...
so it sounds like using a cell would be kosher, and that makes the script details a bit easier.

I have half a dozen old messenger bags...you are welcome to borrow one for as long as you need it. Bonus for being in a messenger related t.v. spot and not having a brand new bag like every other one I have ever seen.

im more worried about knee muscles then wrist ones, just from my past experience with wrists and ankles. When i lived in england i played field hockey at a national level, one of the many ways to rebuild muscle was to use a heavier stick at the beginning of the season then change to the nice one when muscles were there.
mind you i also rock climb so i have some wrist strength, just more support muscles, then quick moving ones.
i was more concerned about wood breaking quicker or something like that. :) always nice to know someone is there trying to stop me from hurting my self.
A hollow tube is stronger than a rod of equivalent diameter, so you might look for old golf clubs. There's usually tons of those at most thrift stores.

Ahhh, the mysterious creak, wont to make a grown man cry. My wifes bike took forever for me to figure out the creak. After checking the stem, bars, seatpost, saddle rails, b/b, pulling and regreasing the threads on the b/b, replacing the b/b and swapping the pedels I finally figured it out. All five chainring bolts were loose. Drove me up the freakin wall trying to figure it out.
Good luck.

I think it is the seatpost or the seat. Someone here had a creaking problem that was resolved with some grease on the rails and a lot of it on the post itself, I will try it tomorrow. But yeah, it is maddening, the bike is silent except for that creak....I even hear it now that I am off the bike, it will haunt my dreams tonight, no doubt, hehheh :twitchy:

I was just thinking about your situation the other day..
I had come to the conclusion, spinning is less hard on the knees but makes your thighs crazy sore.... if your seat is too low.
