Rides and Races - Toronto Fixed

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Aww yeah... the miele road bike was taken out for its first spin today. I will post pics in better light tomorrow, but needless to say, it weighs a freaking ton compared to my Cannondale CAAD9. I need to get a new chain sometime in the near future, because this frame has much longer stays than the frame which I used previously.

oh, in that case i would say do it for sure, especially if it's got older dura ace stuff which i think tends to be pretty cool.
Picked it up today - word is that Mike Barry's son won it many years ago but it was too big for him... ended up in the hands of a then courier, now IT guy named Jason. Seemed nice and totally reasonable... It's in pretty good shape but I JUST spotted what might be bad news around the head tube - a little rust and possible crack but I don't want to jump to any conclusions until I clean it up a bit... there are also some sounds coming from the inside which sound like flakey bits, also a bad rust indicator that I definitely didn't hear while looking at it... ****, I hope I didn't buy a lemon!
Either way, all the components are in fantastic shape and I really hope that the frame is ok because she's a beaut!
Word up.

If the frame seems overly rusty inside, you may want to run your finger along the underside of the chainstays. If you feel little bumps in the paint you may have a problem. I hope it's not the Jason I am thinking it is.

Just like that old Rossin track frame I inherited? Right? I checked the chainstays but didn't see any problems of that nature... I'll check that again when I dismantle it to see if I can locate the source of the flakes.
Jason Devreaux or something along those lines - sound familiar?
Jason read the blog this morning and already emailed me to say that he was 100% unaware of any problems and I totally believe him. The flaking only happened after I rode it home, it didn't have that "salt and pepper" noise inside the frame when I checked it out at his place... all the rattling probably scared it up. If it's rusted out he'll give me my money back...
Kergin - I posted up a few pics here (http://www.makergo.com/shutup/). Enjoy! If everything turns out ok I'll hopefully build it up over the winter...

Some of y'all might appreciate this little story;
On Saturday night some friends of mine and I are riding along College and a cab pulls over in front of us with 3 guys in the back. Knowing what was surely coming, I yelled 'door' as I rode past to let my friends know to watch out... I was looking back to make sure that no one gets hurt when I saw the most wonderful thing...
Sure enough, the rear driver side door swung open as my friend's Sean & Robbie were about to pass but having seen it coming and with Robbie having nowhere to go Sean lifted his leg and kicked that ****er closed! The door hit the guy in the face knocking him back atop his friends... There was much rejoicing.

i've thought of doing that too! although i've also really wanted to stop when someone's hailing a cab and ask "where to?"
how did he manage to kick the door shut while he was moving? did he slow down?

Yessir - riding fixed. Basically, the door was creeping open as he was approaching so he had begun to slow down and it had opened more completely as he rode past which gave him the opportunity to kick it back. Basically, the stars aligned perfectly and magic happened.

Both sides, one side? That's ulnar nerve distribution which does not pass through the carpal tunnel but passes through Guyon's canal at the wrist below the little finger. The nerve itself can be compressed there if you do what's called ulnar deviation (bend the wrist in the plane of the forearm away from the thumb (like you're trying to touch your little finger to the side of your forearm) for long periods or by direct compression.. It can also be compressed at the elbow (the same place you get the 'zing' if you hit your 'funnybone'). I'll sometimes have the sensation if I fall asleep with my elbow bent and my wrist ulnar deviated.
You can sometimes get compression of the nerve roots that make up the ulnar nerve in what's called the thoracic outlet as the nerves pass between a variety of muscles in the neck sort of it in the area between your collarbone, neck, and traps.
There's some nastier stuff that can also cause it, but it's far more likely you compressed the nerve somehow for a prolonged period.

you should check to make sure they actually ship to canada
my co-worker tried to order a cheap bike off of there and even though they said they would ship to canada for extra via a quote, they wouldn't

BikesDirect do not ship to Canada. You need to ship to the US using a US credit card. But if you can get one, they are good bikes.

This Sunday there is a cyclocross race happening at Earl Bales Park in Toronto: http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=earl+bales+park+toronto&ie=UTF8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&z=15&iwloc=A Your very own Cavernmech and I are racing at 10am, Briana & Christine from the City o' Toronto are racing at 11:30am and Mr. Somnambupants is racing at 1pm, provided his ****ed up leg is no longer ****ed up by then.
Cyclocross is effing hard and we would appreciate your support/drunken heckling (it's totally appropriate to be drunk at 10am if you're cheering at a race, my mom said so). Please come out if you're up for it and be loud + rowdy. :)
Also, if anyone is interested in taking part in the race, be there by 9am so you can register ($30 in advance, $35 day-of) and get a day permit ($5-$10). That'll also give you time to pre-ride the course and warm-up a bit before the 10am starting time.

I've got the '05 version and I'm pleased with them.
Cool, I have read good reviews but don't know anyone who has them....I think they are fairly rare as I think they fall into that weird category of a CX wheelset that roadies love, but I am not sure. I'd like to set them up with my 105 9-speed stuff and throw it all on my Ciocc.
I picked up a weird Concorde bike today. It is a tri setup but I think once I lose those wacky bars, it will be a nice bike. Everything is Shimano 600 except the cranks and derailleur, which are some really nice Campy bits, I just dunno which Campy group they are from. Does anyone have any ideas?

CX Wheelset? Why's that? I think they're just a road wheelset..? I don't think anyone makes any alloy, cx-specific wheels. There are some carbon ones, but I've never seen any off-the-peg alloy ones. They're fairly commonly used in 'cross, but most Mavic wheels are... and that's partly because they're available as tubulars (correct me if I'm wrong).

ARE THESE FOR SALE SOMEWHERE?!
to quickly answer my own question, they are available through etsy (http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=sr_gallery_2&listing_id=7090782). custom made to fit! a little pricey for my temporary home, but when this dude moves, johnny + june are moving with him.
Does anyone have any ideas?
The rear D looks like an older A-B Chorus (you can change the parallelogram angle for a big or small cog apparently), so I'd guess so is the crank. In any case Crone d'Auce and (older) Chorus cranks are pretty much the same as far as I know.

Hey all, I'm coming up to T.O. some time this week and I'm looking for a good yakitori bar to just hang out in and heat chicken hearts and other grilled goodies. Must haves are a focus on yakitori, Japanese beer and sho chu (Japanese "vodka" made from all kinds of stuff including sweet potatoes, brown sugar, sesame, people, etc.) Additional positives are loud and spirited w/o being scenish or loutish. The closest thing Chowhound came up with was Ematei which is more like an izakaya so I'm guessing they're keeping the good spots a secret. Speak up and lemme hear your recommendations!

I guess you are right, they are not all that rare, they just are not as common as the other Mavic wheelsets out there. I see SLs up for sale all the time. I am trying to get some of the black SSC SLs, which tend to be more sought-after than the silver ones. On eBay, the Shimano ones go for a lot more than the Campy ones, I am almost thinking the hundreds of dollars saved on the Campy ones could be worth moving to a Campy setup. A Ciocc with full Shimano could get me knifed in some parts of the world ;)
These ones, for example, are currently much much lower (like $200 lower) than any of the similar offerings with Shimano hubs:

It shouldn't matter in friction mode. The derailleur may index -only in 7sp- with matching shifters. It is probably limited in cog size (~26 in the normal "B" position, smaller in the A position).

Sounds pretty unrealistic, but I believe that. I've been riding my bike (way back when I still lived in England) and completely forgotten I was riding my bike. As in, all of a sudden realising "whoa fark, I'm riding my bike!".
'course, this *may've* been after having a safety meeting... that has an influence I guess ;)
Regardless of sobriety, I've not had a problem falling asleep/passing out, though.

hey everyone.
i'm not very vocal on here but i figured it would be the best place to get a quick answer.
I was changing to new tires when i realized my rear wheel has two very loose spokes.
I'm in a fix because i was hoping to ride my bike in waterloo on thursday.
Any chance i can drop my wheels off anywhere and get a quick true on a days notice?
These were originally built by Keith (Cavernmech). Most bombproof wheels ever! quando hubs that have lasted me through two winters. will probably need an upgrade soon but its been solid since day one and i'm not throwing it out if its going to keep working for me!
Heyyy,
so I am parting out my road bike for various reasons, have a few craigslist postings up just thought i'd post them here as well.
The Rear der. and shifters of the grouppo might be sold to Teddy already, but we'll see.
My phone # is on the listings and is the best way to contact me, also prices are negotiable.
