Rides and Races - Toronto Fixed

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Ya, there's something to be said for the seals in those things. LOL, still want to buy my blown up pair of Eggbeaters with the same problem? ;)
Brought them to Sweet Pete's for warranty, and let me tell you: the first thing those replacements are going on is CraigsList.
Also, I think my Capo might fetch more if I sell it off in bits... Selling a frameset might prove to be difficult, though.

Just my luck my new job started Thursday. Kind of hard to take the night off to watch the ice race. As cool as the chef is, don't know if he would have understood if I bailed my 3rd night.
So I assume the ride tomorrow is a no go.

I might be riding out west with a guy I met in a race last year, Steve (Matt R knows the guy - he ran in the rubber race tonight)
If you want me to buzz you, let me know - we're planning on Port Credit-ish, riding fixed and starting around 9ish from the west end.
Ice race was definitely cool - great to see so many folks out, makes me feel cycling is becoming way bigger in Toronto than the past few years - positive moves all around.

As I just got up, and after doing 12 hours in a kitchen last night, Port Credit is not in the plans for me today.

Yes indeed, good racing last night! I'd venture to say there were nearly double the number of racers as last year.... although the rubber race was a bit sparse!

I've registered for the CN Tower climb again (though for pretty selfish reasons, I love the physical challenge and don't really care about the charity).
Anyone else want to go climb?
I'm thinking ~6am to start so it'll be less busy. Costs $75 minimum to climb and it's on Saturday the 18th of April.
I've done it a few times already, so if you have questions go ahead.
How long does it take you on average? Can you do it without taking a break?

i did it once a few years ago and it took about 15 mins - although it didn't cost $75!
75 bucks to take the stairs! You can take the elevator for 25, suckers :p

I do it every year in Sep/Oct for the United Way. Did it in 16:10 this year which isn't bad considering how many slow people I got caught behind.

I've done it every climb since Spring '06 barring last fall. (Both the WWF and United Way climbs)
First climb was 18:15 and every time since it's been a little quicker (17:43, 17:26, 15:55), with 15:18 being my fastest last April. I think those 17: times are right, I can't remember without looking at my t-shirts.
Yep, I don't take a break (I always try to beat my time) but have had to do active rest by single-stepping sometimes (my cardio couldn't handle it sometimes when double-stepping).
The $75 is a bit of a bummer, all my previous climbs have been $50 - which I honestly don't mind paying to be able to climb the CN Tower (pretty unique event, IMO) - but I still don't care, it's a rare opportunity to do something fairly remarkable (again, IMO), I really enjoy the challenge of the climb and to keep on pushing and it feels good I guess to contribute for the cause. The way I justify the $75 is pretty much "I can claim it back on my taxes!" :)

Thank god I rode a geared bike.
You'll be loving that ride back home, though...
I hauled ass (glad because I was 10 minutes late) over to Main/Danforth today and was very grateful for the wind... going north was rough, but coming back home west tonight will be brutal... Definitely pain-inducing on the fixed gear
Hope it eases tonight, I've got to go to Keele/Steeles tomorrow and my road bike isn't quite ready for riding... doh.

Yeah, going north was really rough today but south was fun ;)
Every day I have close calls but today was the closest one in awhile---I guy went through a red light and almost hit me. He wasn't even "running the red", he was just casually driving along at about 40km/h, not paying attention and he went through a red light. If there had been pedestrians, he would have killed them. I yelled at him and then he remembered that he was controlling a 3500lb piece of machinery and sort of gave me a wave or something which further aggravated me. Heh, people.

Yeah that bugs me a massive amount. The inattention people have on the road scares the heck out of me.
I got hit by a guy in a Honda Fit on Friday night, I was riding alongside him for a good 20 seconds upto where College opens up wider (going east, after Euclid?) and the guy then decides to make a right turn at that first road where the road widens up and just before the bike lane starts - I had pedestrians 3 feet into the roadway (trying to cross) on my right and a car on my left, with no turn signal - as soon as I saw him turn I went with him, so luckily he only hit my foot and unclipped me(!), I kinda went "heeeeyyyyyy!" and carried onto the sidewalk with a raised "wtf" hand. I didn't bother to stop, so I assume he didn't.
A question I thought of today - is it illegal for me not to have stopped? I was technically in an accident, though I didn't come off the bike, should I stop in those cases? I figure it won't do any good to talk to the driver, especially if I'm all hopped up on adrenaline/shock.
I also made a car go through a red... I was trackstanding at Danforth/Playter (or Chester, one of those T-junctions) and started to ride as soon as the cross-street light turned red... I guess the guy next to me figured it was green and came along with me, but then realised and slammed on half way through. By this time, the light had turned green and he got a good number of honks from the folks behind him - I just howled, really thought it was hilarious.
Haha that must have been funny. I actually start when the corss light turns yellow (and wathcing for anyone going through at that time of course). Never led anyone with me though. As for stopping, i don't see a reason to do so, no one was hurt, nothing was damaged and i doubt the driver would care for a lecture.

Sunday night, I was riding along Sterling to Dundas. When I got to Dundas, some ****** made a left off of Dundas into my lane (oncoming) and hit me head on. No damage other than twisted stem, but it was enough to knock me off the bike. I was gonna call the cops when I saw how hard the guy in his passenger seat started laying into him (the diver). I just gave him **** for not paying attention and went along my way home. Licensing standards must be easier than getting a job at McDonalds... ****...

with race season coming up, I was just wondering if anyone could recommend a good club to join for road racing in the Yonge+Lawrence area (or within 10km)
Lapdogs (based out of Dukes) and the Darkhorse Flyers (Hello Velo) seem like the best options so far. Just looking to do a bunch of club/skill rides to get some experience, as well as some races.

If you are fairly new to Road Racing you may want to consider The Midweek Club. They do their own weekly series with an emphasis on new riders/skills improvement.

It sounds like a good fit, except that it's at the other end of the city. Then again, I could use the extra kms to get in shape.

It happened tonight. I was sprinting up a hill in the drops and heard the tube go, then my bike turned into a wet noodle. I'll contact the rep, send him some pics and start the RA process. The frame's a Devinci - do you guys sell those at the Parliament St. location or should I talk to Maki?
PS. This was my first time breaking a frame. It sounded like a loud tick when it broke - nothing dramatic at all. The bike's handling made it plainly obvious that something was wrong though. I'm glad the top tube held!
PPS. These pics make it hard to tell but that break is on the down tube about 4" away from the head tube. The crack originated right at the cable stop. Yaaay, stress risers.

How old is that frame?
You can look on the bright side that everyone is bound to have a catastrophic equipment failure at some point, and you got yours out of the way without wrecking, so you're not due for disaster for some time hopefully ;)
My philosophy is that frames are like shoes. The same pair of shoes wears out many times faster when worn every day than if rotated between several pairs. I think that many bikes are necessary. This spreads the wear and tear. :)

How old is that frame?
It's an '06, used as a commuter almost every single day since I got it (including winters) ... plus two cyclocross racing seasons, plus two rides to Montreal from Toronto, plus mountain bike trails, road rides, etc. etc. It saw a lot of use and went down swinging. ;)
That said, I've contacted the rep and this should be covered under warranty.

I've got a Rob Roy frameset kicking around somewhere in town that I'm going to track down this week and hopefully build up (expect a visit, Keith). That'll give me a singlespeed road/CX bike to hurt myself on for awhile.
